Family:Whitney, Amos (1832-a1900)
Amos8 Whitney (Aaron7, Aaron6, Levi5, Daniel4, Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Aaron7 and Rebecca (Perkins) Whitney, was born 8 Oct 1832, Biddeford, ME.
He married, 8 Sep 1856, Laura Johnson. She was born 9 Nov 1837.
He was born in Biddeford, ME. Some of his younger years were spent in Saccarappa, where he was educated in the common schools. At the age of twelve years he moved to Exeter, NH, where he remained until he was fourteen. He then entered the employ of the Essex Machine Company, in Lawrence, MA, and learned the machinist's trade. He went to Hartford when he was about nineteen years of age and was employed by the Colts Fire Arms Company for a few years, and for a number of years he was in the employ of the Phoenix Iron Works. In 1860, with Francis A. Pratt, he founded in a small way what is now Pratt & Whitney Co., manufacturers of machinist's tools, special machinery, etc., now one of the largest concerns of kind in this country. It is well known in this country and abroad. He is a stanch Republican in politics, but being of a very retiring disposition never takes an active part in public affairs; resided 231 Lawrence St. Hartford, CT.
