FIFTH GENERATION

LIEUT. BENJAMIN WHITNEY (Joseph, Joseph, Jonathan, John) b. Pepperell, Mass., Oct. 27, 1741; d. Sept., 1821. Because Lieutenant Benjamin was married four times and fathered seventeen children, we depart from the standard form to clarify this information.

First wife: m. Aug. 12, 1761, Mary Turner (1741-1778) They had nine children:

Mary, b. Mar. 4, 1763; d. Aug. 28, 1778
Benjamin, b. May 5, 1764. Served in the Revolutionary War at the age of 17.

After losing his wife and six children in the summer of 1778, Benjamin was left with three sons: Benjamin, David, and Abel.

FIFTH GENERATION

Fourth wife: Anna Woods (? - 1866) m. probably 1810

Two children

*Franklin, b. Nov. 30, 1810; d. Jan. 5, 1880 m. in 1842, Catherine Kemp (1821-1881)
George, b. Mar. 24, 1813; died young

Lieutenant Benjamin must have taken his fourth wife, Anna, on a "honeymoon trip" to Tunbridge to help his son Aaron build a log cabin. At least, it is recorded that Franklin was born in Tunbridge, and three years later, George was born back in Pepperell, Mass. It seems that the trip from Pepperell to Tunbridge would have been rather difficult in those days, and yet they managed to travel back to Pepperell with a babe in arms, and have yet another one! Lt. Benjamin died 8 years after the birth of his seventeenth child, in Pepperell, at the age of eighty.

Letter from Governor Clinton
New-York, July 25th, 1750.

SIR,

I have taken the sense of his Majesty's council on your Excellency's letter of the 22d ult. respecting the extent of the western boundary of our government, who think it highly expedient I should lay before his Majesty a representation of the matter on the part of this province; and as you propose to do the like on the part of New-Hampshire, they are of opinion it will be for the mutual advantage of both governments, if we exchange copies of each others representation on this head. If you approve of this, I will send you a copy of mine accordingly.__I am, &c.

Notwithstanding the interfering claim of the province of New-York, governor Wentworth proceeded to make further grants, west of Connecticut River; as will appear by the following list of grants made up to the year 1764, inclusive, viz:'*

Names of Townships Date of the Grants:

Tunbridge . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sept. 3, 1761

One of the Grantees for the Township of Tunbridge was a William Whitney of Whitney Hill. No further records have yet been found. He probably was William Whitney born Weston, Mass, 1736. Refer to page 140.

NEW BRIGHTON

About 1820 there was a little village they called "New Brighton" located about a half-mile up above where the A-frame now stands (1977).

My father, Abijah, said there were about 13 families living there. Some of them could have been surveyors and moved on to other territory.

A brick school house was built around 1820 up above the Whitney Hill Cemetery on the knoll. The next school was built where it now stands.
