John Wiley6 Whitney (Elias5, Jeremiah4, Nathan3, John2, Henry1), son of Elias5 and Judith (Wood) Whitney, was born 2 Jul 1814, Fishkill, NY, and died after 1874.

He married, 10 Nov 1835, Albany, NY, Eliza Grimwood, daughter of Isaac and Susanna (Cooper) Grimwood. She was born in Suffolk, England.

Phoenix says the following:

"John Wiley Whitney, b. at Fishkill, N. Y., 2 July 1814; a carriage-maker; married at Albany, N. Y., 10 Nov. 1835, Eliza Grimwood, of Albany, born in Suffolk, England, dau. of Isaac and Susanna (Cooper) Grimwood. He settled in Poughkeepsie; and, in 1849, went to California, where he resided, for several years, in San Juan, and was a justice of the peace, or alcalde, and postmaster. He was living at Stockton, Cal., in 1874."

i. William Francis7 Whitney, b. 10 Nov 1838, Poughkeepsie, NY; d. 28 May 1845, Poughkeepsie, NY.
ii. Sarah Hooker Whitney, b. 15 Feb 1840, Poughkeepsie, NY; went to California, with her parents, and was a teacher in the public school at Monterey, CA, for four years; m. 4 Oct 1873, San Francisco, CA, George Davidson, of Fort Whipple, AZ, private secretary of Gen. Small; and was living at Prescott, AZ, in 1874.
iii. Maria Louisa Whitney, b. 1 Apr 1842, Poughkeepsie, NY; m. Charles Henry Briggs.
iv. Henry Clay Whitney, b. 1 Jun 1844, Poughkeepsie, NY; went to California.
v. Mary Frances Whitney, b. 3 Oct 1846, Poughkeepsie, NY; m. Charles Murray, of New York, NY; resided 230 West 33d Street, New York, NY, in 1874.
