George Appleton8 Whitney (George Ransom7, Appleton Downer6, Asa5, Joshua4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of George Ransom7 and Harriett Maria (Bronson) Whitney, was born 28 Nov 1838, Berea, OH.

He married, 2 Dec 1869, Elyria, OH, Mary Arabella Patterson. She was born 10 May 1850.

He was born in Berea, OH. He was educated at Berea, OH, and was a soldier in the war for the Union. After the war closed he engaged in manufacturing business in Berea. He seems to have inherited a natural mechanical genius from some source, possibly from the same fountain head from which Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton-gin, received his. He has had several inventions patented. He is now a manufacturer at Vandalia, IL; resided Defiance, OH, and Vandalia, IL.

i. Grace Mildrid9 Whitney, b. 2 May 1874; d. 9 Aug 1881.
ii. Ethel Sophia Whitney, b. 26 Feb 1879.
