PREFACE

This work is a compilation. It is the result of long and patient labor and research, much of which has been bestowed by others than the compiler, who claims but little originality. His chief labor has been in the preparation of that part of the genealogy beginning with the third generation after John and Elinor Whitney. For the earlier genealogy, he is greatly indebted to Mr. Henry Austin Whitney, late of Boston, whose contributions to the New England Historical Genealogical Register, with some alterations and additions, have been closely followed: and many interesting facts in the history of the family have been taken from the rare work, entitled Whitney as A Surname, of which he has made liberal use. This has been done by permission, of which the compiler has freely availed himself, as this volume is for private circulation, and not for his pecuniary profit. He is further indebted to Mr. D. Williams Patterson, Genealogist, of Newark Valley, New York, who has devoted many years to the study of the Whitney families, and to Dr. Bond, the historian and genealogist of Watertown.

The last five generations of the family have been so widely separated, that it has required much correspondence and other labor to make a work as nearly complete s that here presented. Some now living have neglected, others have refused, to furnish infor-

mation asked for--and for errors and omissions caused by want of such data, the compiler will not be responsible. He will gladly receive advice of these, and of any others that may be noticed. His task was undertaken for the information and entertainment of his immediate family and himself, and with no thought of giving the genealogy a wider circulation, but so much interest in it has been shown, and so many of his relatives have desired to have it, that he consents to put it in print. As its title indicates, it does not purport to be a full line of the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney.

WHITNEY.

The name Whitney is of Saxon origin. Witan, in the Anglo-Saxon signified wise men, and its genitive, witena, of the wise men. Thus we find that the Witena-gemot, or, as Blackstone wrote it, wittena-gemote, was the council or meeting of the wise men, or the Parliament; and, adopting this etymology, Witan-eye, or Witan-iye, would signify the island of the wise men, or of the Parliament.

The parish of Whitney, in Oxfordshire, England, has been written at different times, Wittney, Witenie, Witeney, Witteneye, Wyteney, Wyttney, Wytteney, Wytteneye, Whiteney, Whitteneye and Whitney. The town of parish of Whitney, in Herefordshire, has been otherwise written Witenie, Whytenyey: and from this the surname Whitney, which was taken about the time of the Norman Conquest, in 1066, seems to have been derived. It is spelled Witenie in the Domesday Book.

The family was seated in Herefordshire before the Conquest, and soon afterwards, Eustace (or Eustacius,) who was Lord of Whitney, in conformity with the Norman custom, took the surname Whitney from his estate, and ws the ancestor of a long line, distinguished for four or five centuries, in the field and otherwise. [See Appendix A.]

The patronage of the Church of Pencomb was long

enjoyed by the lords of the manor. Some instances and dates of its exercise follow:

In the will of James Whitney, of Whitney, Knt., dated 28 May, 1587, the testator desired to be buried at the Church at Whitney, among his ancestors.

Eustace de Whitney was of Flemish descent. Of his mother, Agnes, it is recorded in Domesday Book, "Agnes, relicta Turstini Flandrensis, et Eustacius Miles, filius ejus, dominus de Whitney, dederunt ecclesiae Sancti Petri, Glocest: unam hidam terrae in Pencomb, etc." [Agnes, widow of Turstin the Fleming, and sir Eustace her son, Lord of Whitney, gave to the Church of St. Peter, at Gloucester, one hide

(120 acres) of land in Pencombe, &c.] Some of the early Lords of Whitney were of Welsh descent, one of whom, Sir Piedge Exrog, was a Knight of the Round Table, and "to King Arthyr's time he lived att his castle att Cardmore at Cardiganshire."*

In the Church of St. Giles, Cripplegate, London, (where are the graves of Milton and John Fox) in the wall, near the clock, is the massive monument, to Constance Whitney, a grand-daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy, of Charlecote, who prosecuted Shakespeare for poaching. It represents a woman rising from her coffin. A legend says: After the young lady ws buried, the verger descended into her vault, opened the coffin, and began to cut off the finger of the maiden on which a precious ring had been left. On the knife entering the flesh she rose, and it ws found that Miss Whitney had been interred alive, a deep trance having been taken for death. But it was probably intended to be emblematic of the Resurrection.

There is no date on the monument, but on the Church Register, in the columns of "Burialls in May 1628" is "Mrs. Constance Whitney, gentlewoman." The title of Mrs. or Mistress was not then used, as now, to denote married women only. The inscription is as follows:

TO THE MEMORIE
of Constance Whitney, eldest daughter to Sr. Robert Whitney, of Whitney, the proper possession of him and his ancestors, in Herefordshire for above 500 yeeres past. Her mother was the fowrth daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy of Charlecote, in Warwickshire, by Constance Kingsmel, daughter and heyre of Richard Kingsmel, surveiour of the Court of Wardes, this lady Lucy her grandmother, soe bred

her, since shee was 8 years old, that shee excelled in all noble qualities becomminge a virgin:
of so sweete proportion of beauty and harmonie of parts,
shee had all sweetnesse of manners answerable,
a delightfull sharpeness of witt,
an offensles modestie of conversation,
a singuler respect and pietie to her parents,
but religious even to example.
She departed this life most Christianly at seaventeene, dying the griefe of ll, but to her grandmother an unreoverable loss, save in her expectation shee shall not sty long after her, and the comfort of knowing whose shee is, and where in the resurrection to meete her.*

The Whitney family in America is very numerous, not only in New England, but in many other portions of the United States. A very large number of those who bear the name are the descendants of JOHN and ELINOR WHITNEY, of Watertown. No relationship has yet been traced between John Whitney and Henry Whitney of Norwalk, Conn., 1665, a genealogy of whose descendants is the subject of the very elaborate work, in three volumes, of Mr. S. Whitney Phoenix, late of New York.

JOHN WHITNEY was born in England, in 1589, and dwelt in the Parish of Isleworth, on the Thames, opposite Richmond, nine miles from London, from May 1619, to January 1623-24. He embarked at London in April, 1635, with his wife Elinor and five sons, in the Elizabeth and Ann, Roger Cooper, master,† and settled in Watertown, Massachusetts, in June of

that year, where his son JOSHUA was born, on the 15th July following--he being the first of this line born in America. The death of John Whitney is registered in the Church Record of Watertown, 1673, thus: "John Whetny, widdower, deceased first of June, aged abought eighty-four years." His wife, Elinor, mother of his eight sons, died in Watertown, 11 May, 1659, aged about 60 years (tho' called 54). He married Judah (Judith?) Clement, 29 September, 1659.

He purchased a homestall of 16 acres upon which he continued to reside. At the same time he owned eight other lots, amounting to 212 acres to which he afterwards made additions. Later, the homestall became the property of his son Joshua, of Groton, who sold it to Deacon Nathan Fiske, on 29 Oct., 1697. He was admitted freeman 3rd. March, 1635-36, appointed constable of Watertown, by the General Court in 1641. Besides the ordinary duties of that office, the constable then was the collector of the taxes of the town; he paid the debts of the colony to the people of the town, supplied its weights and measures, set in order the watchmen, and inflicted the punishments ordered by the Court, "unless he could get another to do it." He was selectman, 1635-1655 and town clerk, 1655. His early admission as a freeman, and his electionas a selectman show that he held a respectful position. His will, dated 3 April, 1673, disposed of real and personal estate. Odd bequests were an "iron kitle and a great brass skilet" to his son Jonathan; and to Benjamin, "the old mare, if she live."

and it is probable that her husband came with them. In 1640, she was described as our sister Eaton of ye Xh. at Watertowne.

The ages of John Whitney and his five sons, as thus given, were all too young. The Parish Register of Isleworth contains the following entries:

1621--September 14 John Whitne and Ellin had John there son baptized.
1623-4--January 6, John Whitne and Elinor his wife had the sone Richard baptized.

What was the motive for making them younger than they were is not known; but it is suggested that the Non-Conformity acts might have had some influence in the matter.

This will, written by himself, though informal and not on record, may be found in the files of the Middlesex Probate Office, and provides, inter alia, as follows: "If som by going to Law or troublesom to thr brethren I say they shall lose the share of what I have bequeathed them. SAMUEL WHITNEY, of Boston, Concord and Castine; b. 5 Sept., 1734. He m. in Boston,
536. ABIGAIL CUTLER, 20 Oct., 1757, dau. of David and Lydia Cutler. He resided in Concord from 1767-1777. Was delegate from Concord to the first provincial Congress, so called, in 1775, and was a leading member of the town committees of safety, correspondence and inspection. When Concord had rasied two hundred men, he was appointed muster master, was a participant in the engagement incident to the battles of Concord and Lexington, and at that time had a large amount of the public stores in his dwelling. Mrs. Whitney used to relate that on the day of the "Concord fight," she was being conveyed out of the way of danger with several of her children, when a bullet passed through the carriage, grazing the head of one of the boys. He removed to Castine about 1791, the year of its incorporation. In politics he was a Federalist. He d. at Castine, 29 May, 1808. She d. at Castine, 2 July, 1813.

He died at the home of his son, John M. Whitney, in Washington, Miss., and was buried there. Years afterward, and after removing to his plantation near Fayette, Miss., this son prosecuted a claim against the United States, for services of his father, during the Revolutionary War. The money recovered was expended in the purchase of a marble monument intended to be erected over his remains, but his grave could not be identified, the "neat enclosure put around it" having disappeared. In June, 1857, it was erected in the private graveyard of John M. Whitney on his plantation. On this cenotaph is the following inscription:
"In memory of

JAMES R. WHITNEY,
a native of Middletown, Connecticut.
He died February, 4th 1822.
He was a soldier of the Revolutionary War, of Commo-
dore Paul Jones' Squadron of the Navy of the United
States, and was in that memorable battle lf the Richard
and the Serapis, on the 23rd Sept., 1779, and shared in the<br severest struggle, to the honor and renown of his country's

effort for Liberty."

It bears also the emblem of the square and compasses, which indicates that he was a Freemason. The story of his services as he related them to his son John, is, in short, as follows: He was first in the land service, in Captain Lowrey's company of New York Militia. Afterward, he went to Boston, and entered the Navy. Went to sea on a cutter, and was captured by two British vessels. Paul Jones sighted these vessels, pursued them, made fight and captured them, together with the cutter and her crew. Thereupon, he joined Paul Jones' squadron, and was with him when he landed upon the estate of Lord Selkirk, on the coast of Scotland.

  His parents emigrated from New York to Georgia, in 1785, and while on their way thithre, he wsa born in Hillsborough, N. C. When a lad, he went from Georgia to Charleston, S. C., nd thence, before his majority, to Philadelphia, nd for manby years was a clerk and teller in the Schuylkill Bank. In July, 1832, he removed to Port Carbon, Pa., and was Cashier of the branch of that Bank there, until 1840, when he went to a farm near Orwigsburg, Pa., and thence to Pottsville, in 1845.

  * He was known as General Whitney. When about 20 years of age, he was sent by his father from Binghamton to Philadelphia, with a drove of cattle 17 in number. Part of his way was through a wilderness, with nothing but marked trees to direct his path. He went alone, starting late in the Fall. He drove to Great Bend, thence through the Nine Partners to Hop Bottom, on Tunkhannock Creek, and thence to Thorn Bottom. The cattle subsisted often by browsing in the forests. He next reached Wilkes-Barre, and he drove thence to a branch of the Lehigh near Pocano Mountain, where his cattle were poisoned by eating laurel, on account of which he suspended his journey for over a week, and then proceeded by Wind Gap and Nazareth to Philadelphia. There he sold his cattle, and purchased mercantile goods, which he placed upon Pennsylvania wagons and transported to Middletown, Pa., on the Susquehanna. There he put them on what was called a Durham boat pushed by six hands, and they were thus carried 255 miles to Owego, most of the distance against a strong current. Often he was obliged to be midway in the water, amid cakes of floating ice, for hours together. He reached Owego a little before Christmas.

APPENDIX A.

The family of WHITNEY is of Saxon origin, and was seated in Herefordshire, England, before the Norman conquest.

In the year 1086, Eustace, who was Lord of Whitney, in the County of Hereford, in conformity with the Norman custom, took the surname of Whitney, and was the ancestor of a long line of knights and gentlemen, who distinguished themselves in the field, &c., for four or five centuries.

Sir Randolph de Whitney, the grandson of Eustace, accompanied Richard Coeur de Leon to the crusades, and distinguished himself greatly by his personal strength and great courage. On one occasion he was sent by Richard on a mission to the French commander, and, as he was leaving the British camp, the brother of Saladin (whom he had twice before defeated), followed him with two Saracens in his company, and, riding round a small hill, made a furious attack upon de Whitney, who defended himself with the greatest vigor; but his assailants were gaining upon him, when a furious Spanish bull, which was feeding near the field of conflict, was attracted by the red dresses of the Saracens, and becoming angry at the color flitting before him, made so vigorous an attack upon them that they were diverted from their intended prey, and sought safety in flight.

Sir Randolph soon succeeded in wounding his single assailant, whom he left for dead, and then, overtaking the two Saracens, dispatched them, and proceeded upon his mission from the King.

According to the superstition of that time Sir Randolph attributed the event to the especial interposition of the Virgin, a medal of whom, consecrated by the Pope, he had continually worn upon his breast.

On his return to England, de Whitney erected a chapel to the Virgin, at Whitney, which was called Our Lady of Palestine's Oratory, the walls of which remain, adjoining the grounds of the original family mansion.--Noble's British Family Antiquities, as quoted by Sir John Yonge, Garter King at Arms at London.

ARMS, azure, a cross chequy or and sable. Upon a canton, gules, a lion rampant, argent. Crest, a bull's head couped sable--horned argent: horns tipped with red.

Motto, Fortis sed non ferox.

The authenticity of this legend has been questioned by Mr. Henry A. Whitney, late of Boston. The first descendant of John and Elinor Whitney who was known to have borne arms, was Revd. Aaron Whitney, who graduated at Harvard Coll., 1737; d. 1779. His arms were a paly of six or and gules, chief vert. Crest, bull's head couped sable, horns argent, tipped gules.

It is noticeable that in the coats of arms claimed or used by the different generations and branches of the Whitney family, there is a similarity in composition and meaning. The bull's head furnishes the crest, in all casees known to the compiler. It would seem, however, from a comparison of them, that they had a common origin and history. And yet it may be, that some who have adopted them have drawn liberally upon fancy and imagination. Be the truth as it may, it is of little consequence to the descendants fo the yeomen who early settled in New England. Their pride should be satisfied with the knowledge that their ancestors, with others, gave to the young Commonweaths their character of boldness, faithfulness, and love of civil and religious liberty; and whilst it is well to know all that is attainable of their English fathers, their long line, their chivalry, arms and honors, it is from the sturdy immigrant and his sons that comes the title to American citizenship.

DEAR SON:
I have at length attempted to write you again. I wrote you very lengthy from Binghamton in the State of New York and also from Batavia more particulars than I can at present recollect. However, to give you a small sketch of my travels: I went on to N. York, from there to Albany where I found your uncle William and family all well. I tarried there 4 months. I then went on to Binghamton; tarried there 8 months. From there I took the stage with a view to go to Detroit, where you cousin Andrew G. Whitney lives, who is practicing the Law with a great deal of success, but was prevented by ice on Lake Erie. In the Spring, Andrew came to Batavia which pre-

vented my going to Detroit. In May I went by land to the head waters of the Allegheny River, where I took water for Pittsburg, 300 miles, where I purchased a akiff. Myself and another man descended the Ohio River to the mouth, 1100 miles, where I had my boat stolen from me with everything in it. I then bought another boat and hired another man, to descend the Mississippi to Natchez, 650 miles, where I landed after a passage of 17 weeks, where I found your brothers John and William living in Jefferson County, 25 miles from Natchez. John is now living in this city and doing very good business in the mercantile line. William is in Jefferson, planting. They are both married and have three children each.

I myself have lately been elected to Sergeant at Arms, for the legislature of this State, which is now sitting, at 4 dollars per day. I have not heard one word from you since I left Philadelphia, altho' I wrote you several times. I hope and trust you will write me immediately on the receipt of this. Direct your letters to Greenville, Jefferson County. My respects to your wife and all the family.
