Sarah Amelia, eldest daughter of George and Sarah (Burch) Allen, was born in East St. Louis, Ill., February 27, 1838. She was educated at Jacksonville Academy, Illinois. She was married at Annapolis, Md., April 23, 1864, by the Rev. C.H. Henries, Chaplain in the United States Navy, to Eben Whitney, son of Bennett and Susan (Curtis) Whitney, who were natives of Suffield, Conn. Eben Whitney was born October 22, 1837, in Bridgeport, Conn. He was Captain in the 30th S.C.T., from February, 1864, to December, 1865. He is at present a postal clerk in the railway service, from New York to Philadelphia, on the Pennsylvania Railroad. They have only one child, Bessie Winifred, who was born at Astoria, Long Island, N.Y., January 1, 1875.
