[p. 684-687] HARRINGTON

The earliest records of this name in New England have it Errington and Arrington. The first of these forms soon received its aspirated prefix making it Herrington, and this was the prevailing orthography for more than a century. Robert Errington1, the immigrant, was one of the proprietors of Watertown in 1642. He m. in 1649, Susannah George and had a son Thomas2, whose w., Rebecca Bemis, bore him George3, b. Aug. 1, 1695. The latter m. Hepzibah, dau. of John and Abigail Fiske, whose sister was mother of John and Thomas Stearns of Nar. No. 2, and whose nieces were the wives of Samuel Hager and Stephen Sawin. A cousin of Hepzibah m. Eliezer Bigelow. So it appears that four of the oldest families in town were connected with each other by its blood relationship.

47. Harrington, Samuel6, s. of Henry5 and Ruth (Blodgett) Harrington of Lexington, was b. Oct. 3, 1764. Henry5 was s. of Henry4, s. of John3, s. of John2, prob. bro. of Thomas2, the second in the line already given. Samuel6 m. Mary Stimpson, Aug. 27, 1788, and soon after came to W. for the purpose, in part, of caring for the large pastures of Joseph Simonds of Lex., on the side of Wachusett, and the flocks and herds that were kept in them during the grazing season. He built a ho. near the highway, above the Foskett place, and occupied it while he lived. He d. May 4, 1825, a. 60, and his family were so widely scattered that it has been exceedingly difficult to gain any knowledge of them. It has [been] said that there were 13 chn., but no record of them has been found and no attempt has been made to tabulate them in chronological order. Only such brief snatches of information as have been gathered from various sources are given, to wit:

  Besides these, there were 4 others, whose names have not been ascertained. One dau. is said to have m. a Morrill, and one a Tillinghast.
59. Harrington, John N., s. of Timothy and Eliza of Sudbury, m. July 2, 1860, Nellie E. (2), dau. of Franklin and Eunice (Whitney) Lombard. They res. a few years in this town, and rem. to Fg., their subsequent home. They have had 8 chn., of whom 3, as the records show, were b. here:

William Hartwell, came from Kent, Eng., according to tradition, ab. the year 1636, set. in Concord, and was made freeman, 1642. He d. 1690, a. 77. His s., John2, b. 1641, m. Elizabeth Wright and had Edward3 b. 1689, who m. Sarah Wilder of Lancaster in 1711, and res. in that town for a time, but rem. to Lunenburg, ab. 1724. A son, Phineas4, b. 1732, m. Mary Pierce of Groton and located in Fg., whence a branch of the family was transferred to W. in the next generation. The mother, Mary (Pierce) Hartwell, d. here June 25, 1819, a. 85.
1. Hartwell, Phineas5 s. of the last named, was b. Fg., July 25, 1781. He m. June 16, 1807, Elizabeth, dau. of Charles and Sarah Willard of the same place, and came here to live with his uncle, Alpheus Whitney, on the farm where his s., Leander, now res. He d. Oct. 29, 1853, a. 72. His w. d. March 2, 1862, a. 82. Chn.:

I. Harvey, Zachariah4 . . .
In 1766 he made a proposition to the Dist. of W. to build a gristmill on North (Whitman's) River, at the so-called Brooks' mill site, in consideration of certain grants of land to be made him in the vicinity, which proposition was at an early day accepted. Pursuant thereto, he put up the mill and a house near by, which he in due time made his abode. Five years later he exchanged estates with John Brooks, who owned lot No. 4, and so came into possession of almost the entire tract of 60 a., bounded S. W. on Main St., in the central village, and S. E. on Bacon St. This property he disposed of in 1777 to Lieut. Samuel Gerrish, and Lieut. Gerrish in turn to Capt. Nathan Whitney, Nov. 29, 1793.

[p. 697-701] HOAR

This name represents a family, somewhat prominent and distinguished in the history of Mass. and of the nation, during the last half century. Its progenitor on these shores, according to tradition, was a wealthy banker of London, whose name has not been preserved and whose d. occurred soon after his arrival here. He brought with him prob. his wife, Joanna, who d. 1661, at Braintree, where it is understood he established himself: two daus., names unknown, and three sons: - Daniel2, who ret. to Eng.; Leonard2, who grad. at Harv. Coll., 1650, and was its President, 1672-1675; and John2, a lawyer by profession, noted for his outspoken, manly independence. The last set. in Scituate ab. 1643, where he had a large landed estate on the So. slope of Mann Hill, but rem. at the expiration of 10 or 12 years to Charlestown, and thence to Concord. He became eminent for his legal acquirements and ability, his services being frequently called into requisition by the colonial authorities. It was he who acted as agent for the government in negotiating with the Indians for the liberation of Mrs. Rowlandson - a captive taken at the destruction of Lancaster, Feb. 10, 1676 - and in securing that result three months afterward at "Redemption Rock," Everetteville. A s. of John2, named Daniel3, b. 1650, m. Mary Stratton and had 11 chn. Of these, one bore his father's name and was known as Lieut. Daniel4. He m. Sarah Jones, dau. of John and Sarah, and had 7 chn., dying Feb. 8, 1780, a. 93. One of his sons, Jonathan5, grad. Harvard Coll., was an officer in the F. and I. War, and, after the conquest of Canada, was appointed by the crown, Gov. of Newfoundland, but d. before assuming the robes of office. Three other sons, John5, Daniel5, and Timothy5, were represented in the history of this town as hereinafter set forth - the record beginning with the first permanently established here.

[31.] Hoar, Leonard7, bro. of the last [s. Timothy6 and Lydia (Hunt) Hoar, b. July 8, 1798], m. Lucinda (50), dau. of Luther and Eunice (Gilbert) Sawin, April 9, 1823. He lived in the small house on the turnpike, a few rods below the crossing of the road leading from Wachusettville to the R. R. Station. He d. July 15, 1863, a. 65. His wid., Lucinda, d. at Ash. March 18, 1887, a. 87. Chn.:

Austin Hoar8 (42), the oldest of the above family, went through a course of instruction at the W. Academy, and afterwards at the Eclectic Med. Coll. at Phila., graduating in due form. He subsequently attended the Med. School connected with Dart. Coll., where he received the degree of M. D. He has been a successful practictioner in W. Boylston, Sterling, and Fg., in which place he has res. for many years. He is known as Dr. Austin W. Sidney, having had his named changed by legislative enactment in 1847. He is a member of the Highland Baptist Church, and is highly esteemed, not only for his scholarly and professional acquirements, but also for his interest in church work, in humanitary enterprises, and in whatever is conducive to the prosperity and well being of his adopted city. It was largely through his efforts and influence that the Home for Aged and Indigent Women was established a few years since, an institution of which he was first chosen and still remains the executive and official head. He m. (1) Eunice Whitaker of W. Boylston, who d. after a few years, and (2) Mandana Walker of Sterling, still living.

[p. 713-715] HOWARD

Samuel Howard1, sometimes written Haward or Hayward, left London in April, 1635, on the Elizabeth, and came to Charlestown. He m. (1) Sarah Storrers, and with his w. joined the First Chh. in 1648. The next year he was made freeman, and in 1652 became a res. of Malden, where his w. d. and where he m. (2) wid. Elizabeth Sweetzer of Camb. He had 14 chn., two of whom had descendants in this tn. He d. in 1681, a. 68, leaving a will now on file at the Prob. Off. in E. Camb. His s. Jonathan2, b. 1667, m. Elizabeth Lee, May 24, 1690, and had Jonathan3, b. June 8, 1691, who m. Mercy, m. n. unknown, and had 6 chn., 1719-33. These three generations all res. in Malden, whence their descendants went forth to aid in peopling other localities and to make for themselves a place in the history of the new world. The first to appear in the order of time was .. Nathan4, s. of Jonathan and Mercy of Malden [snip]

[7.] Howard, Joseph5, [s. Nathan4 and Lydia (Lynde) Howard, b. April 29, 1769] m. Hannah, dau. of Wm. Pollard, Fg. (pub. April 5, 1794), and succeeded to his f.'s homestead property, which he occupied awhile, but subsequently rem. to lot No. 41, the Dea. Stearns estate, now occupied by wid. Nathan Howard, purchased of his kinsman, Benjamin Howard, March 17, 1804. In 1825 he sold the paternal farm to his s., Joseph. Numerous books and papers still extant show him to have been an exceedingly busy man in life, engaged much in public affairs, though not as a town officer. He was a member of the Sch. Com., 1820. He d. Oct. 28, 1830, a. 61. His wid. survived him 30 yrs., passing away June 24, 1860, a. 90. Chn.:

[24.] Howard, Albert7, s. of Nathan and Betsey (Whitney) Howard, is a prosperous farmer and enterprising citizen of the tn. He lives on lot No. 53, the Holden place, the buildings of which, elevated and commodious, are conspicuous for miles around on every hand. He m. (1) Mary Jane, dau. of Geo. W. and Abigail Davis, Pn., Nov. 13, 1874. She d. Oct. 12, 1882, a. 36, and he m. (2) Emeline M., dau. of Geo. W. and Lorena W. Davis of Shirley. Chn.:
