Private, Captain Daniel Mitchell’s Company, Massachusetts Militia

Lucy Whitney applied for benefits from her husband James Whitney’s War of 1812 pension on 22 March 1878 from Cumberland Co., Maine. She testifies that she is 74 years old, and a resident of Falmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine. Her husband served as a Private in the company of Captain Daniel Mitchell in the Massachusetts Militia commanded by Colonel Joseph E. Foxcroft. James Whitney was called out at North Yarmouth on or about 10 September 1814 for an indefinite period, and served until on or about 24 September 1814, a period of 14 days. He was discharged at Portland, Maine.

Lucy testified to the following description of her husband at the time of his enlistment: 24 years of age, dark hair, dark gray eyes, dark complexion, 5 feet, 8 inches in height. He was born in Gorham, Maine, and was a shoemaker.

Lucy further testifies that she was married to James Whitney at the town of Gray, Cumberland Co., Maine on 20 March 1821 by Cyrus Cummings, Clergyman and Justice. Her maiden name was Lucy Mountfort, and neither she nor her husband had been previously married. She also testifies that her husband James died at Cumberland, Maine on 22 March 1877. They had always lived in Cumberland from the date of her husband’s discharge until his death. Since his death, she has resided at Falmouth, Maine. Her address is West Falmouth care of Richard Mountfort.

There is also testimony in the file on 1 October 1878 by Esther A. Brooks and Loemma Mountfort, residents of Falmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine. They testify that James and Lucy Whitney were man and wife, and that James died at Falmouth (sic), Maine on 22 March 1877. They say that they attended his funeral, and that they are Lucy’s daughters.

There is a marriage certificate in the file from Gray, Maine stating that James Whitney and Lucy Mountfort were married there by Cyrus Cummings, Esq. on 20 March 1821. The file also contains Lucy’s date of death as 17 May 1879.
