Thomas S. Whitney (1799-1884) and Thankful Blethen (1794-1864), m. 1819

by Kenneth L. Whitney]

This statement is published as part of the text of a submission for admission to The Daughters of the American Revolution by Mrs. Clara Noble Marble. It is published in the D.A.R. Lineage Books, Volume 69, page 194, DAR ID Number 68531. A reading of the full submission states that Thankful Blethen, daughter of Increase Blethen and Isabella Whitney, was married 20 February 1819 to Thomas Whitney, born 10 September 1799, died 18 August 1884.

The book Marion Thomas Whitney, The Story of His Predecessors & Descendants, Parker, Greely, Tufts was published in 1995 by Edith S. Middleton. It states that Thomas S. Whitney, born 10 September 1799, son of Joseph and Rebecca (Stinchfield) Whitney of Phillips, Franklin Co. (then Somerset Co.), Maine married Lydia Tufts 14 June 1827 in Warren Co., Ohio.

The solution to the conflict in these records is an inspection of the grave markers of Thomas Whitney and his wife Thankful in the Merch Cemetery, South Casco (formerly Raymond), Maine. The cemetery marker for Thomas, husband of Thankful, reads Thomas G. Whitney, died 15 August 1884; age 88 years, 1 month, 20 days. A calculation of his birth date from this record results in 26 June, 1796.

The conclusion that can be drawn from the cemetery record is that Thomas S. Whitney, born 10 September 1799, is not the grandfather of Mrs. Clara Noble Marble. Her grandfather is Thomas G. Whitney, born 26 June 1796, the husband of Thankful Blethen. This couple resided in Raymond (now Casco), Maine. The birth of their daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Whitney is recorded in the unofficial records of Raymond, Maine, and she is the mother of Mrs. Clara Noble Marble.
