Whitnev Apr 1869 31 NY Cattaraugus dau James Hollister Fannie Whitney Feb 1843 57 NY HENRY AUSTIN WHITNEY From Joseph7,, Joseph6, Samuel5 Benjamin4, Thomas3,Thomas2,John (QV). He was christened "Henry Augustus" born 6 Oct. 1826 in Boston. Samuel, his gr-grandfather, left Boston in 1767. He was a farmer, and the owner of a country store in Concord. He was a delegate to the Provincial Congress. On the morning that Paul Revere made his famous ride, Samuel Whitney emptied his cellar of its stores, and then aided the neighbors in removing all public supplies to a place of safety, where the Red Coats would not find them. Then he took his place as a Minute Man who repulsed the British regulars at the bridge in Concord. The first year of the country s independence, Samuel sold the farm and moved back to Boston. He was the only person named Whitney in the first Boston directory of 1789. In 1793 Samuel removed to Castine, Maine. His grandson Joseph, born in Newburyport 11 June, 1796, was a prominent merchant of Boston, who married 23 July, 1822, Elizabeth Pratt, who was born 29 August, 1800. She was the second daughter of John and Mary (Tewksbury) Pratt, descendant of Richard Pratt. Her father, Captain John Pratt was a sea captain, ship owner, and merchant. Henry, only son of Joseph Whitney, educated at private schools, then at Chauncey Hall, Boston, and Harvard College, 1842 1846, was kindly, genial, and gentle. He went into business with his father Joseph, and retired in 1873. On March 3, 1852 he married Fanny Lawrence, born 19 August, 1828, the daughter of William Lawrence of Boston. In 1857 he wrote "The Descendants of John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown, Mass." He numbered among his kin, Eli Whitney and Rev. Peter Whitney. Among the posts he held he numbered the membership in the Humane Society one of the most rewarding. Other appointments were, the bank, hospital, and trust company in the area. The great tragedy of his life was the accidental death of his son by a companion who killed him while hunting on the meadows near Milton. His wife died 28 January, 1883. Henry Austin built a beautiful home at Milton, and in Boston. He died 19 February, 1889. He was survived by his mother and five children; Joseph Cutler, Ellerton Pratt, Elizabeth, Constance, Hugh. DR. SAMUEL STILLMAN WHITNEY Born in Natick, Mass., to George and Esther (Morse) Whitney. His father George was also a native of Natick, farmer, land holder, who died aged 70. His mother Esther, bore 8 children and died aged 60. Samuel grew up in Natick, went to Leicester Academy, Amhurst College. Although in poor health, he studied medicine with Dr. John Fisher of Boston, and went to Harvard Medical School. His practice was in Newton, Upper Falls, and in Europe where he spent some time. Dr. Samuel moved to Dedham in 1844, and died there aged 40. His wife, Sarah Spaulding was born in Littleton, Mass., 6 Jan. 1816. Her father settled in Chelmsford. He was Dr. Spaulding of Boston Medical School. Her mother was Sally Whitney, daughter of Dr. Timothy Whitney Harrington of Chelmsford. At one time Samuel Stillman Whitney practised in Allston. FROM THE ESSEX INSTITUTE Physicians of Essex County. Mass. Dr. Elisha Whitney born 27 Feb. 1747, died 22 Feb 1807, the son of Daniel and Dorothy (Tainter) Whitney, who married Eunice Farley, the daughter of Gen. Michael and Elizabeth (Choate) Farley of Ipswich. Elisha attended Harvard College 1761, and settled in Hamilton, Mass. in 1772. He was the surgeon of Wade s Regiment, during Shays Rebellion. In 1793 he settled in Beverly, Mass. His granddaughter, Sarah Ellen married Dr. Charles Haddock. Sophia Whitney married Edward Miller, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of Mass., and lived in Wayland, Mass. Whitney Ship Captains (listed in the Essex Institute) Daniel Whitney of the "Columbia." Elisha Whitney of the "Elizabeth of Salem." James E. Whitney John C. Whitney of the "Flora." Josephine Whitney owner of the "La Grange." Michael Whitney of the "Dew Drop." Sumner Whitney of the "Gentile." George Evans Whitney married 6 June, 1883, Helen Gertrude Lewis, born 28 Sept. 1857 in Framingham. They resided in Cambridge. Isaiah Whitney of Bolton married 15 Nov 1797, Susannah Newhall of Lynn, born 12 August, 1769. In 1807 he and his wife Susannah, with other members of her family, conveyed to her brother Jacob their shares of real estate left by their deceased father. Peter Whitney married Joanna Newhall, born 7 Sept. 1775, died 2 May, 1841; place of burial unknown. Lottie L Whitney married 18 Jan. 1897, Lewis Bancroft Tarlton, born 1 August 1860 in Rye, New Hampshire. Mabel B. Whitney of Buffalo, New York, married 10 June, 1898, David Everett Wheeler, MD, born 23 Nov. 1872. OTHER WHITNEYS OF MASSACHUSETTS Tisbury, Mass. Mary Whitney, born 1 May, i666 Mary Whitney married Benjamin Manter 4 April, 1695 Mary Whitney, wife of Deacon Benjamin Manter died 13 August, 1750 THE WHITNEYS OF WATERTOWn, WESTON, SPENCER, STOCKBRIDGE, MASS. AND WYSOX, BRADFORD CO. PA. Bowing to the many requests of distant cousins and other interested individuals, we are including the line of Whitneys from whom we descend. In previous issues we have given bits and pieces of our ancestors, so bear with us as we repeat some of the genealogy. We are from the line of John and Elinor Whitney, who arrived in Watertown in 1635. The children of this union have been presented over and over again, so we will skim over the first generation of this genealogy. John was the first Whitney in America. John and Elinor barely made it to Watertown before their son Joshua was born. They arrived in June and Joshua was born in July. Soon John became a freeman, this being greatly desired. For this privilege a man had to belong to the Church, then obtain permission to become a freeman from the Quarterly Court. After this an oath was taken in front of a magistrate. An inventory of the goods of John Whitney shows the fact that he was not "poverty stricken," but rather, had sufficient worldly goods to live comfortably. His children were: 1. Mary bp 23 May 1619,, died young in England. 2. John bp 14 Sept 1621, married in Watertown, Ruth Reynolds. 3. Richard bp 6 Jan 1623/4, married Martha Coldham; he removed to Concord and then to Stow, Mass. 4. Nathaniel b 1627, 5. Thomas bp 10 Dec 1627, married Mary Kettle; resided in Watertown and then in Stow, Mass. 6. Jonathan b 1634, married Lydia Jones; resided in Watertown and in Sherborn, Mass. 7. Joshua b 5 July 1635, married Lydia[1], Mary[2], Abigail Tarball[3] 8. Caleb b July 12 1640. 9. Benjamin b 6 June 1643, married Jane[1], Mary Poor[2], and lived at York, Maine, although part of the time in Mass. John Whitney, Jr. married in 1642 Ruth Reynolds, daughter of Robert Reynolds of Watertown, Mass. John Whitney, Jr. became a freeman. The will of Robert Reynolds mentions his daughter Ruth Whitney. In 1675 John Whitney, Jr. is listed as one of the 20 soldiers in Capt. Hugh Mason s company, who participated in King Philip s War. This information may be used by interested descendants in their claim for membership in the "Society of Colonial Wars," and "Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century." In his will, John Whitney, Jr. admonished his children not to quarrel, else he would cut off their share in his estate, rather desiring them to live in peace and love of God. His children were: 1. John b 17 Sept 1643, married Elizabeth Harris, resided Roxbury, Mass. 2. Ruth b 15 April 1645, married John Shattuck and Enoch Laurence. They lived in Charlestown, Mass. 3. Nathaniel b 1 Feb 1646, married Sarah Hagar[1], Sarah____[2] 4. Samuel b 26 July 1648, married Mary Bemis, and resided in Watertown. 5. Mary b 29 April i65Q, died unmarried some time after 1693. 6. Joseph b 15 Jan 1651, married Martha Beach, and lived in Watertown. 7. Sarah b 17 March 1653, married Daniel Harrington. 8. Elizabeth b 9 June 1656, married Daniel Warren of Watertown. 9. Hannah b about 1658, was unmarried in 1693. 10. Benjamin b 13 June 1660, married Abigail Hagar[1], Elizabeth____[2]. They lived in Watertown. Nathaniel Whitney married Sarah Hagar, daughter of William and Mary (Bemis) Hagar 12 March, 1673. She was the mother of all his children. Upon her death he married another Sarah who died 7 May, 1746. Ultimately Nathaniel moved to Weston, Mass. but not until after the end of the King Philip s War. He lived on the road to Lexington, Mass. Two centuries later some of the foundation of the house was still visible (Honorable William Whitney Rice, 1895). Children, all by his first marriage: 1. Nathaniel b March 1675, married Mercy Robinson. They lived in Weston. 2. Sarah b 12 Feb 1678, married Jonathan Ball[1], Charles Chadwick[2]. 3. William b 6 May 1683, married Martha Pierce, and lived in Weston, Mass. 4. Samuel bp 17 July 1687, married Ann Laboree, moved to Stratford, Conn. 5. Hannah bp March 1688, married James Billings (?). 6. Elizabeth b 15 Dec 1692, married Joseph Harrington. 7. Grace b 1700, died 23 March 1719. 8. Mercy married _ Greaves. Nathaniel Whitney, son of Nathaniel and Sarah Hagar, married Mercy Robinson, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Culver) Robinson, 7 Nov 1695. They lived in Watertown and in Weston. He died 23 Sept 1730. Children of Nathaniel: 1. Nathaniel b 23 Jan 1696, married Mary Child. They lived in Westboro, Mass. From this line came Eli Whitney. 2. Sarah b 3 March 1698, married Ephraim Rice of Worcester, Mass. 3. Amos b 19 April 1701. 4. Elizabeth b 22 July 1702, married Daniel Bigelow of Worcester, and they lived there and in Ward, Mass. 5. Jonas b in Dec 1703. 6. James b 2 March 1704. 7. Israel b about 1710, married Hannah ____, resided in Groton and in Oxford, Mass (this Whitney is possibly not of this family). 8. Susanna bp 17 June 1711, married Abraham Gregory, (born 1708) 9. Solomon bp 17 June 1711, married Martha Fletcher, lived Rindge, NH. (He was born 1711). 10. Samuel bp 17 June 1711, married Elizabeth Hastings, and lived in Shrewsbury, Mass. A descendant is Newel Kimball Whitney, elder in the Mormon Church. 11. Joshua bp 25 April 1714 (born 17 March 1714), married Mehitable Wilson and lived in Spencer, Mass. 12. David b 1716, married Mehitable Parker, and lived Needham, Mass. (we also debate this child being one of this family). 13. The records of Watertown and Weston state that Ebenezer born or baptized 25 April 1714 was also a child of Nathaniel and Sarah, according to the baptisms. We do not think that Jas belongs with this family either. He is not recorded in the Watertown records. Joshua Whitney, son of Nathaniel and Mercy Whitney (Mary), married Mehitable Wilson, daughter of James and Mehitable (Leavens) Wilson on 21 May, 1739, in Spencer, Mass. In 1746 Joshua purchased his father-in-law s land in the area of Leicester that was incorporated into Spencer, Mass. Among property owners in Spencer Joshua rated 27th. All of the sons of Joshua Whitney were in the Revolution. Contrary to common theory, Joshua Whitney is buried in Spencer, Mass. He died 15 June 1786, and is in old Norwich Cemetary. His tombstone carries a very quaint inscription. Mehitable died in Spencer 1 May, 1785. All the children were born in Spencer. The children of Joshua and Mehitable Whitney: 1. Phinehas b 24 June 1740, married Sarah Harrington. They moved to Oswego, New York after the Revolution. 2. Lemuel b 1743, married Thankful Griffith. They lived in Springfield, Vermont, and in New Hampshire. During the Revolution Lemuel made ammunition for the army by using saltpeter. Also lived Tolland, Conn. 3. Beulah b 3 June 1745, married John Ball. 4. Elisha b 8 Jan 1747, married Esther Clark. Her father was a schoolteacher, but he was not active in Spencer, and Esther was not born in Spencer, contrary to printed data. We have not finished our research on Esther, but this we can tell you! This is the family from whom the Bradford Co Pa Whitneys descend. 5. John b 4 May 1751, married Rachel Hiscock. After the Revolution they removed to Rochester, NY. 6. Sibbilah b 26 Jan 1754. 2 7. Mehitable b July 1756, married Obadiah Newton,1 _______Williams,2 _______Hanks3 of Hopkinton, Ohio. 8. Joshua b 11 Nov 1758, married Esther Prouty,1 Electa Sawtell or Sartell2 as records vary. After the Revolution they removed to Pike, NY. 9. Susannah b 15 August 1762, married William Hiscock. They resided after the Revolution in eastern NY state. 10. Polly b 19 Oct 1766, married Jonathan Upham of Windham, Vermont. Elisha Whitney married Esther Clark daughter of Asa Clark, 20 Feb 1783. Sometime after 1786 they removed to Stockbridge, Mass. where their children were born. Their children were baptized in the new church there. Both parents were members of the Congregational Church. The first child may have been born in Spencer, but she was baptized in Stockbridge. Children of Elisha and Esther: 1. Rebecca b 1783 possibly in Spencer, bp 1 April 1789 Stockbridge, Mass. She died in Pa. and is buried at Forty Fort. 2. Asa Clark b 5 May 1785, bp 1 April 1789, Stockbridge Mass. married Elizabeth Dorrance. He became a physician at Kingston, Pa. After the death of his first wife, he married Susan Ellen Inman. He died 10 Dec 1824, aged 39 and is buried at Forty Fort. 3. Elizabeth b 10 Dec 1786, bp 1 April 1789, married Joseph Marie Piollet. He was the Frenchman who came to America to make a new home for himself after selling the lands of Talleyrand in Philadelphia. He had been honored by Napoleon as postmaster of the Army of the Alps. He built beautiful homes in Bradford Co Pa. Elizabeth died very young. 4. Sally b 12 Oct 1788, bp 1 April 1789, died 1821 unmarried. 5. Elliott b 18 May 1791, married Maria Goodwin. 6. Alvin b 31 Dec 1793, married Mary Woodburn. After her death he married Nancy Woodburn. He died 5 Nov 1872, and is buried in Rome, Pa cemetary. 7. Ebenezer b 15 Dec 1795, married Betsy Woodburn. 8. Elisha b 25 July 1797, married Sally Brown. 9. Esther b 23 Dec 1799, married Moses Woodburn. 10. Alanson b 1 July 1801, married Laura Towner. The pension file for Esther Clark Whitney, wife of Elisha, the Revolutionary soldier is #3746. It was not until she was deaf and blind that Esther was able to get her pension. The original pension petition by Elisha, before he died, had been denied. He was a Minute Man, and was at the battle on the bridge at Lexington and Concord. He told his family that he heard the battle of Bunker Hill when stationed at Cambridge. He marched to Bound Brook where the British threatened an attack on New Jersey. Our records of the children of Elisha and Esther have been taken from the ones at the Congregational Church in Stockbridge, Mass. Dr. Elisha Whitney, Jr. son of Elisha and Esther Whitney married Sally Brown daughter of Humphrey and Hannah (Dodge) Brown. Elisha was a graduate of Hamilton College Medical School, NY, located in Clinton, NY. All the Whitney children suffered ill health and died young. Elisha died 10 Jan 1847. His father died 4 July 1832, a fitting date for an old Revolutionary soldier. He outlived many of his children. Children of Elisha and Sally Whitney: 1. Ellen Theresa b 19 Feb 1820, married Daniel Coolbaugh. 2. James Monroe b 31 May 1822, married Edith Woodfield. 3. Erasmus Darwin (known as Darwin) b 1824, married Laura Bixby. 4. Elisha b 6 March 1826, married Cornelia Rugg. 5. Sally b 1828, married James Lyman Morgan. 6. Esther b 1830, married Harrison Lamb. 7. Mary Elizabeth b 19 March 1833, married Jesse Allen. 8. Ebenezer b 1836, married Adeline Blasdell. 9. Joseph Marie (named for Joseph Piollet) b 1844, married Priscilla Ann Straw. As you can see, the youngest child of Elisha and Esther was 3 years old, when Dr. Elisha died. Dr. Elisha Whitney had a reputation for having in his possession one of the most extensive libraries in the Wyoming Valley of Pa. Ebenezer Whitney, son of Dr. Elisha and Sally Whitney, married Adeline Blasdell (Addie), granddaughter of the old Revolutionary soldier of Hopkinton, NH and Susquehanna Co Pa., John Blasdell. On 21 Feb 1864 Addie and Ebenezer were married in Montrose, Pa. Both of them were schoolteachers. Like the rest of his family, Ebenezer was in poor health, and died in 1901. Addie survived him for many years. She was a wonderfully talented dressmaker, a superb cook and housekeeper. She died in 1927 and is buried in Wysox Cemetary, Wysox, Pa. Children of Ebenezer and Addie Whitney: 1. Lois Lavanche (Blanche) b 1865, married Orlie Cook. She was a schoolteacher. 2. Victor Emile b 1872, moved to New York State. 3. Gertrude b 1873, died in 1879. 4. Edith b 25 Nov 1876, married George Washington Franklin, of the Philadelphia Franklins. 5. Sarah birth unknown, death 21 Jan 1881. 6. Agnes Beatrice b 14 August 1882, died 1 Jan 1883. This is the last Whitney family in our present lineage. Edith Lillian Whitney was our grandmother. She was tall, like the Whitneys in our family, and slender. She was a handsome lady. I dimly remember her as a gracious, loving woman, gentle and kind to her family, and interested in community affairs. Her marriage to George Washington Franklin brought to our family the early Pa families who founded the area around Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. It is said that Edith s parents, Addie and Ebenezer wondered about this "upstart from Philadelphia," and George s parents, John and Julia Ann Franklin were not sure about this "country girl from northern Pa" who had captured their youngest son. Edith was from "all New England stock," and George from the sophisticated Philadelphia aristocracy. Opinions changed when parent met parent. Both of our grandparents were lovely people, and we are proud of the heritage they left us.
