H.J.T. Wood notes that the old register was in a good state of preservation in 1898, but that the leaves (folios?) had been sewn into the cover in the wrong order, the earliest date being on page 12. The first page bears the date 1606 and 1607. This probably explains why the register is often quoted as starting in 1607 whereas the earliest record is for 1591.
However, these early entries, between 1591 and 1594, are recorded as births rather than baptisms, all but one being for the Whitney family and may therefore be notes regarding the family of the Lord of the Manor rather than true baptismal records.
