Dorchester was founded in 1630.  Parts were split off as Milton, in 1662, and Stoughton, in 1726.  Land was acquired from Dedham in 1739.  Territory was ceded to Quincy in 1792, to Boston in 1804, and to Quincy again in 1814, 1819, and 1820.  Land was gained from Dedham in 1831.  Parts were given to Boston in 1834, and to both Quincy and Boston in 1855.  Hyde Park was formed from Dorchester in 1868.  Dorchester was annexed to Boston in 1869.
