Thomas Whitney, gentleman, was listed as 'of Lambeth Marsh' when he married Mary Bray, daughter of Thomas Bray, in 1583 at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey. Mary (Bray) Whitney was buried 25 Sep 1629 at St. Margaret's Church. He may have been the Thomas who married Mary Griffin 11 Apr 1631 at St. Gregory by St. Paul, London and may have been the Thomas who married Margaret George 31 Jan 1633 at St. Gregory by St. Paul, London. This marriage is supported by the fact that his wife's name was listed as Margaret in the records relating to his death. Thomas's death on 15 Apr 1637 is recorded in the records of St. Margaret's Church.


John Whitney was christened 20 July 1592 at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster. He, his wife Elinor and their children emigrated from England to America and settled in Watertown, Massachusetts. John was a tailor.


Thomas Whitney, a son of John and Elinor (-----) Whitney, was born 1629 in England. He married Mary Kedall.


Isaiah Whitney, a son of Thomas and Mary (Kedall) Whitney, married Sarah Woodward, daughter of George Woodward, 1695 in Massachusetts.


John Whitney, a son of Isaiah and Sarah (Woodward) Whitney, was born 6 Dec 1698 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He married Rebecca Whitney, probable daughter of Moses Whitney and Sarah Knight, 20 May 1724 in Lancaster, MA, John was a leader in the movement to separate the town of Harvard from the town of Lancaster, MA. He also led the movement to separate the town of Shirley from Groton, MA, and held the first town meeting in his home. John was listed as a builder (probably a carpenter).


Ezra Whitney, a son of John and Rebecca (Whitney) Whitney, was born 24 Aug 1731 in Harvard, Massachusetts. He married Agnis (-----). He was a house wright (carpenter)


Ezra Whitney, son of Ezra and Agnes (-----) Whitney, was born 29 Nov 1760 in Lunenburg, Worcester Co, Massachusetts. He married Sally Hooker 22 Dec 1785 in Athens, Windham Co, Vermont. He died 8 May 1842 in Burns, Allegany Co, New York. In 1817, he moved with his large family from Vermont to Canaseraga, New York. This village was actually once called "Whitney's Valley" in his honor. He served in the Revolution.

  1. Patsey was born 22 Apr 1786 in Athens Township, Windham Co, Vermont. She married Eleazer Dewey.
  2. Horace was born 7 Sep 1787 in Athens Township, Windham Co, VT. He married Hannah Towne.
  3. Erastus, (see below).
  4. Sally was born 4 Sep 1793 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT and probably died before 1800.
  5. Esau was born 21 Aug 1796 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT. He married Esther (-----).
  6. Jacob was born 21 Aug 1796 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT. He married Teresa (-----).
  7. Seiva was born 18 Mar 1799 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT.
  8. Royal was born 11 Apr 1801 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT. He married Mary E. (-----).
  9. Andrew was born 26 Apr 1804 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT. He married Clementine (-----).
  10. Sally was born 12 May 1806 in Rockingham Township, Windham Co, VT. She married Jacob Secor.


Erastus Whitney, son of Ezra and Sally (Hooker) Whitney, was born 4 Sep 1790 in Athens Township, Windham Co, Vermont. He married Aurilla (-----). He moved with his parents and siblings from the family home in Vermont to Allegany County, New York in 1817. He was a farmer and possibly a miller. He died 10 Aug 1862 in Burns, Allegany Co, NY.

Their children were:

  1. Northa was born circa 1823 in New York and died 26 Jan 1886. She resided in Burns Township, Allegany Co., New York and apparently did not marry.
  2. Melvin, (see below).
  3. Arminda, born circa July, 1829, d. Sept. 22, 1841, probably in an epidemic.
  4. Sally, d. Sept. 17, 1841, probably in an epidemic.
  5. Henrietta, d. Sept. 15, 1841, probably in an epidemic.
  6. Mary Jane, d. Sept. 13, 1841, probably in an epidemic.
  7. Mary E. Luthera, sometimes called 'Lute', was born 26 Apr 1844 in New York. She resided in Burns Township, Allegany Co., New York and apparently did not marry.


Melvin Whitney, son of Erastus and Aurilla (-----) Whitney was born 2 Oct 1827 in New York. He married Ann Eliza Hooker on 22 Jun 1847. He was a farmer and a miller and resided in Burns Township, Allegany Co., New York.

Their children were:

  1. Frances was born 30 Sep 1847 in New York. She married Southwick Fritz and had several children. Last known to be living in Nunda, Livingston Co., New York in 1900. Children were named Fay L. Fritz, Egbert W. Fritz, Floyd Fritz, William D. Fritz, Harry Austin Fritz, Grata E. Fritz, and Victor E. Fritz.
  2. John C. Fremont, sometimes called 'Free', was born 21 Jan 1849 in NY. He married Eliza (-----) and was last known to be living in North Topeka, Kansas in 1888.

  5. Egbert Dermont was born 15 Jun 1861 and was last known to be living in Buffalo, NY in 1888.
  6. Victor Hugo was born 22 Jul 1869 and was last known to be living in Canaseraga, Allegany Co, New York in 1888.

Hugh Monticello Whitney, son of Melvin and Ann Eliza (Hooker) Whitney, was born 23 Nov 1851 in Canaseraga, Allegany Co, NY. He married Mathilda Caroline Heberlein, 7 Jan 1879 in Kill Creek, Osborne Co, KS. He died 12 Aug 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a farmer and an inventor.

Their children were:

  1. Mable Clare was born 11 Mar 1880 in Sumner Township, Osborne Co, KS and died of scarlet fever 4 Jul 1890.
  2. Grace May was born 12 Aug 1882. She married Thomas Hayward and had two daughters.
  3. Raymond Melvin was born 19 Mar 1884 in Burlington, Coffey Co, KS. He married Anita Hildenbrand and had two children.
  4. Frederick Clifford was born 7 Apr 1887 in Liberty, Clay Co, MO. He married Kathryn Williams and had three children.
  5. Earl was born 17 Feb 1892 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co, MN and died 10 Mar 1892.
  6. Lloyd Coleman was born 3 May 1893 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co, MN. He married Ann Schottlander and had one daughter.
  7. Lela Earle was born 26 Oct 1898 in St. Louis, MO. She married Harold Koop and had two children.


Eugene Lamont Whitney, son of Melvin and Ann Eliza (Hooker) Whitney, was born 12 Sep 1854, in New York, probably in Canaseraga, Allegany County. He was a farmer and lived in Washington, Washington Co., KS in 1888. He married Bessie P. (-----) and resided in Boise, ID. He died 1 May 1911 in Berkley, CA.

  1. Bertrice Louise, married Bartlett Sinclair. They had three daughters.
  2. Stella B., married Harry Shellworth and had one child: Eugene Whitney Shellworth. Descendants live in Idaho and Colorado.
  3. Helen P. was born in 1888 in Washington, Washington Co., KS. She married McKeen Fitch Morrow in 1920. No known descendants.
