Caleb5 Whiting (Caleb4, Josiah3, Samuel2, Nathaniel1), son of Caleb4 and Hannah (Fairbanks) Whiting, was born 7 Nov 1756, Douglas, MA, and died 2 Apr 1809, Readsboro, VT.

This family is sometimes recorded as Whitney, not Whiting.

Notes

The 1800 Census of Readsboro shows, on the same page (number 146), Caleb Whiting (over 45), then 15 intervening households, then John Whitney.

The 1810 Census of Readsboro shows, on the same page (number 111), John Whitney, then 12 intervening households, then Lucy Whiting (over 45), Caleb Whiting (16-25), and Danforth Whiting (16-25), all adjacent. This lends credence to the theory that these three were Whitings, and related to one another, and not necessarily related to the Whitneys.

The 1820 Census of Readsboro shows John Whitney, John Whitney Jr., Asa Whitney, Danforth Whitting, and Widow Lucy Whitting.

By 1830 the Census of Readsboro shows only Asa Whitney, and no Whitings.

My conclusion is that probably all of these people were Whitings, not Whitneys, and not related to John Whitney of Readsboro.
