Family:Whitney, Alfred (1810-1867)
Alfred Whitney, parentage unknown (but see notes below) was born 6 May 1810, Dutchess Co., NY, and died 23 Jan 1867, Roxbury, NY. He was buried in Halcott Cemetery, Halcott Center, NY.[1]
He married, before 1837, Phebe Hammond, daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Jenkins) Hammond. She was born 18 Feb 1818, Roxbury, NY, and died 12 Jun 1893, Roxbury, NY.[2]
"Alfred Whitney, a native of Putnam County, New York, and a blacksmith by trade, was a soldier in the Mexican War and served through all the campaigns. Returning to Roxbury after the war, he went from there to Greene County, where he spent the remainder of his days. He married Miss Phoebe, daughter of Jonathan Howard, whose family were all originally from Roxbury, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Whitney reared eleven children; namely, Amasa S., Walter B., Edgar, Margaret, Leonard, Jonathan, Mertie, Hosea, Elizabeth, Ninian, and Ely. The father was sixty years of age when he died, in 1867; and the mother was seventy-six at her death, which occurred January 16, 1893."[3]

Notes
Since Alfred was born in early 1810 in Dutchess Co., NY, it would seem certain that he would be enumerated as a male 0-9 years old in the 1810 census in Dutchess Co., NY. The only family which seems to have such a child and which is not otherwise eliminated, is that of Ebenezer Whitney, Clinton, Dutchess Co., NY: Ebenezer Whitney 10010/21010/00, i.e. 1 male 26-45, 1 male 0-9, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 10-15, and 2 females 0-9. His identity and family details are unknown.
