Arthur Eastman8 Whitney (Joel7, Asa6, Levi5, Daniel4, Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Joel7 and Esther M. (Treadwell) Whitney, was born 5 Jul 1847, Winchester, MA,[1] and died 15 Jan 1918, Winchester, MA, aged 70 years 6 months 10 days.[2]
He married firstly, 12 or 7 Nov 1878, Winchester, MA, Alice Fletcher, daughter of Jacob G. and Sarah or Ruth A. (-----) Fletcher.[3] She was born 15 Aug 1853, Charlestown, MA, and died 15 Jul 1901, Winchester, MA, aged 47 years 11 months, of pericarditis and oedema of lungs.[4]
He married secondly, 2 Dec 1903, Arlington, MA [also recorded at Winchester, MA], Alice Emma Marston, of Arlington, daughter of Alfred and Emma (Lawrence) Marston.[5] She was born about 1878, Boston, MA.
Arthur E. Whitney was born in So. Woburn, now Winchester, MA. Educated in the public schools of Winchester. Was librarian of the public library when 16 years old. Entered his father's employ (mechanical engineer and machinist) in 1864. Early developed the family taste for invention. To present date Mr. Whitney has taken out twenty-two patents, all of which have proved successful and have been adopted as useful and labor saving. Most of Mr. Whitney's inventions have been made in the line of leather making machinery and they are well known to the leather trade all over the United States and somewhat in England. Mr. Whitney is at the present time a successful inventor and manufacturer. His factory is at Winchester, where he lives. Mr. Whitney has been elected to offices of trust and honor by his townsmen, although his taste is not in that direction. He served three years on the board of selectmen; one year as chairman. He has served as a trustee of the town public library nine consecutive years and has served on a great many important committees for doing town work. Mr. Whitney has always been interested in historical matters and has written important historical articles on local history. He is a life member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society; vice-president of the Winchester Historical Society; life member of Massachuetts Horticultural Society; one of the trustees of the Winchester Home for Aged People, etc., etc.; resided 3 Mystic Ave., Winchester, MA.
