Family:Whitney, Asa (1767-1851)

Asa6 Whitney (Levi5, Daniel4, Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Levi5 and Rebecca (Clark) Whitney,[1] was born 1 Jul 1767, Townsend, MA,[2] and died 27 or 28 Dec 1851, Townsend, MA, aged 85 years, of old age.[3]

He married, 25 Feb 1790, Mary Wallis, daughter of William and Mary (-----) Wallis. She was born 13 May 1764, Townsend, MA, and died 11 Feb 1846, Townsend, MA, aged 80 years, of consumption.[4]

Asa Whitney was a hard working, honest and upright man. All his children were born on Nissequassick Hill, in Townsend. He resided Townsend, MA. He was a blacksmith.

Children of Asa6 and Mary (Wallis) Whitney:

i. Polly7 Whitney, b. 29 May 1790; d. 17 Mar 1861; m. 12 Sep 1811, James French, of Henniker, NH, b. 28 Feb 1789; d. 30 Mar 1862. He was a farmer and superior manufacturer of baskets which business he followed many years. Children:
a. Mary French, b. 28 Aug 1813; m. Hiram Bell.
b. James M. French, b. 29 Jan 1818; m. Mary C. Barker.
ii. Asa Whitney, b. 1 Dec 1791; m. Clarinda Williams.
iii. Samuel Whitney, b. 27 Feb 1794; m.(1) Polly Wallace; m.(2) Kezia Gage.
iv. Sewell Whitney, b. 18 Mar 1796; d. 26 Oct 1818. He d. unmarried, and was the only one of the family who worked on wood, the others being disciples of Tubal Cain. He make bowls, bottles and trays. His gallon bottles were made of poplar, one piece of wood turned inside and outside while the wood was green. Seasoned heads of the same wood were then put in and when dried were air-tight.

vii. Joel Whitney, b. 8 Jun 1807; m. Ester M. Treadwell.
