Family:Whitney, Dewey (1796-1856)
Rev. Dewey7 Whitney (Jonas6, Samuel5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Dea. Jonas6 and Tamar (Houghton) Whitney; was born 3 or 8 Oct 1796, Marlboro, VT,[1] and died 1856, Yazoo Co., MS.
He married, 28 Aug 1827, KY, Mildred Rootes Thornton, daughter of William and Judith Presley (Thornton) Thornton. She was born 30 Jul 1809, Montgomery Co., KY, and died 17 Jun 1871, St. Louis, MO. She resided 212 South 21st Street, St. Louis, MO, at death.
"In 1834, the William Thornton family of Caroline County, Virginia, as well as the family of his son-in-law, Rev. Dewey Whitney, had come to Sangamon County from Kentucky. They stopped a short while in what later became Woodside township and, in 1835, moved to land Mr. Thornton had previously entered, in what later became the town of Chatham, Illinois."[2]
"MILDRED R. [Thornton], married in Kentucky to Rev. Dewey Whitney. They came to Sangamon county with her parents, and had two children. Mr. Whitney was pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Springfield a few years, when he abandoned the ministry in consequence of failing health, studied medicine, and after practicing at different places in New York, moved to Yazoo county, Mississippi, where he was killed by a fall from a horse in 1856. Their daughter, JULIA O., married George O. Allen and lives in St. Louis, Missouri. WILLIAM D., married in Brandon, Mississippi, to Mrs. Rebecca Carroll, whose maiden name was Calhoun. Julia and William were apparently double counted in 1850, being with their mother as well as in the household of Letty Earnest.

Mildred's age of 31 must be an error for 51. She is living with her daughter Julia.
- 1870, Mildred not found.

This was their daughter Julia. William would seem to be her nephew, son of Julia's brother William. If so, William would be William Thornton. Sarah was apparently Sarah E. Allen, not Whitney.
