Elkanah6 Whitney (Joshua5, Matthias4, Cornelius3, Joshua2, John1), son of Joshua5 and Lydia Bowen (Day) Whitney, was born about 1776, Rutland, VT, and died 29 Dec 1845, aged 67 years. He was buried in Avon Cemetery, Avon, NY.[1]
He married, say 1813, Semantha -----. She was born about 1796, Rutland, VT, and died 19 Jul 1878, aged 83 year. She was buried in Avon Cemetery, Avon, NY.[2]
In 1805 he was one of the first trustees of the library in Avon, then in Ontario Co., NY.
On 4 Apr 1808, in Ontario County, he was promoted from Cornet to Second Lieutenant in Major Vincent Matthew's Second Squadron, Fifth Division, New York State Militia.[3]
On 23 May 1812, in Ontario County, he was promoted from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant in Lt. Col. Seymour Boughton's First Brigade, Twelfth Regiment of Cavalry, New York State Militia.[4]
On 2 Mar 1814, he had resigned as First Lieutenant.[5]
On 24 Aug 1828, he was elected an officer of the Avon Zion's Episcopal Church.
His will was dated 20 Dec 1845, and proved 18 Oct 1847, Livingston Co., NY. It mentions wife Semantha, daughters Louisa Snow, Sophia Chase, and Mary Whitney, and son James Whitney, under 21.
