They may have been the George Whitney and Elizabeth South who were married 12 May 1823, Stoke Prior, Herefordshire, England.
In 1841 the family was enumerated on Castle Street in St. Mary Parish, St. Mary, Shropshire, England where George was working as a chemist. In 1851, the family resided on High Street in Shrewsbury St. Chad, Shropshire, England where George was listed as a chemist. Also listed with the family were two other chemists and a house servant.
Also living with the family in 1841 was Catherine Whitney, b. ca. 1771, and not born in Shropshire, of independent means. This was most likely George's widowed mother.

James Whitney, b. ca. 1829, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He was listed as a bookseller in 1851. iv. Elizabeth Whitney, b. ca. 1831, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. v. Catherine Whitney, b. ca. 1833, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. vi. Emma Whitney, b. ca. 1835, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. vii. Eustace Robert Whitney, b. ca. 1836, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He was listed as Robert in 1841, but Eustace in 1851. viii. Mary Ann Whitney, b. ca. 1838, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
