His obituary, from the Stevens Point G., 20 May 1896:
- "GEO. WHITNEY
- "One of Wisconsin's pioneer lumbermen, Geo. Whitney, died at his home, 120 Franklin street, at twenty minutes after five o'clock last Monday morning, aged 78 years and one month. For the past two years Mr. Whitney had not enjoyed good health, suffering from the effects of the grippe, but was able to be out and around at all times and attend to his business interests. In the fall of 1879 he built a saw mill on the Plover river in the town of Pike Lake, Marathon county, and had resided there a good share of the time since. Three weeks ago Mr. Whitney drove to this city, feeling very poorly then, and until his death failed very rapidly. The deceased gentleman was born in Northesk, Northumberland county, New Brunswick, April 16th, 1818, where he lived for upwards of half a century. Twenty-seven years ago the family came to Wisconsin, first locating at Knowlton, where they remained seven years, and in 1875 or '76 moved to this city. Mrs. Whitney died six years ago last September. Ever since Mr. Whitney was a boy in his teens he followed the vocation of a woodsman and logger, his operations having been confined to the Plover river for the past 9 or 10 years. He possessed a remarkably rugged constitution and until within a couple of years was never sick a day. Always staightforward and honest in his dealings with his fellow men, Mr. Whitney's life was well spent. The sons and daughters living are Mrs. R. G. Wallace, G. A. Whitney, Mrs. E. E. Wells, Mrs. G. L. Rogers, Mrs. W. E. West, city; D. R. Whitney, Knowlton; Mrs. N. W. Kennedy, San Francisco, Cal. He also leaves one brother, Robt., of Northesk, N. B. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. L. G. Carr officiating, the remains being afterwards laid beside his wife in the Episcopal cemetery. The following old friends acted as pall bearers: E. M. Copps, H. E. Martin, Peter La Mieux, Chas. Mase, A. J. Booth, Robt. Parker."[1]
