James5 Whitney (James4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), son of James4 and Lydia (-----) Whitney, was born 28 May 1751, Ridgefield, CT,[1] and died after 1790.

He married, before 1785, place unknown, Abigail -----, parentage, birth, and death unknown. She married secondly, after 1790, ----- Ganung, of whom nothing further is known.

Phoenix says the following:

James Whitney, b. in Ridgefield, Conn., 28 May 1751. In the distribution of his father's estate, 20 June, 1763, he had a double portion, as the eldest son. He seems to have moved, with his mother, to the adjoining town of Southeast, N.Y., where he settled, with his wife Abigail -----, whose maiden name has not been reported. Tradition says that he died not many years after his marriage, leaving only one son, and that his widow married a second husband, named ----- Ganung, and had one daughter, Hannah Ganung, who married Benjamin Ruscoe, and had a son, Stephen Ruscoe, who married Phebe Ballard and was living at Danbury, Conn., in Feb. 1874.

Child of James4 and Abigail (-----) Whitney:

i. Joseph6 Whitney, b. 12 Jul 1785, Southeast, NY; m.(1) Hannah Roberson; m.(2) Polly Byington.
