James Whitney, Esq. (George, James, James, George), son of George and Catherine (Davies) Whitney, born about 1793, baptized 12 Jan 1795, Norton Canon, Herefordshire, England, died 11 Dec 1852.
He married Sophia Carline, 18 Apr 1826, Holy Cross And Saint Giles, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
In 1840, James Whitney, Esq., was the largest Whitney landowner in Herefordshire, owning the following parcels of land in Norton Canon Parish, Herefordshire: "In Broad Coppice", "In Broad Coppice", "Hopyard", "Eight Acres", "Further Broad Oaks", "Far North Field", "Hither North Field", "Pool Broad Oaks", "Hopyard Croft", "Old Hopyard", "Broad Oaks", "Upper Broad Oaks", "Lower Broad Oaks", "Nine Acres", "Park Meadow", "Raddleback", "Hale Gobbets", "Orchard", "Calverhill House and Garden ", "Orchard", "Barn and Fold", "Small Raddleback", "West Field", "Little Shirrel", "Ralphs Meadow", "Allotment", "Cottage and Garden", "Orchard", "Brush Croft", "Lower Common Field", "Piece above Lower Common Field", "Lower Glisshire", "Upper Glisshire", "Wellhouse Glisshire", "Well House and Garden", "Homestead and Orchard", "Wats Croft", "In Bower Field", "Tumphouse Orchard", "Tumphouse and Garden", "Tumphouse Croft", "Orchard below Tumphouse Croft", "Green Orchard", "Eckley Green Orchard", "Green Orchard", "Moulders Croft", "House Garden and Orchard", "Bannut Tree Gobbet", "Little Broadmeadow ", "Greg’s Orchard", "Little Orchard", "Pool Meadow", "Grastone", "Common Meadow", "Lower Common Meadow", and "Darkly Meadow".[1]
In 1851, the family resided in St. Mary Paddington, Paddington, Middlesex, England where James was listed as a "Landed Proprietor". Also with the family were two visitors, three young scholars, a governess, and four house servants.
