James Holbrook8 Whitney (John7, John6, James5, James4, John3, Jonathan2, John1), son of John7 and Clarissa (Slack) Whitney, was born 22 Jun 1804, Boston, MA, and died 12 Feb 1874, Brooklyn, NY.

He married 5 Dec 1831, New York, NY, Mary Ann LeRoy Rutgers, daughter of Nicholas Gouverneur and Cornelia (Livingston) Rutgers. She was born 19 Jan 1796, New York, NY, and died 23 Jun 1883, Brooklyn, NY.

He was born in Boston and early engaged in the hardware trade; finally moved to New York City and formed the firm of Whitney & Mcfarland, and then failed in 1837 and took up iron brokerage business and was in it all his life and was quite successful; resided New York City.

Many of the family are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
