Family:Whitney, John (1746-1802)
John5 Whitney (Abraham4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Abraham4 and Sarah5 (Whitney) Whitney,[1] was born 3 Oct 1746, Harvard, MA,[2] and died 25 Apr 1802, Bolton, MA, aged 55 years 6 months 22 days.[3]
He married 9 Jan 1771, Bolton, MA, Sarah Atherton, both "of Harvard,"[4] daughter of Peter and Experience (Wright) Atherton.[5] She was born 25 May 1755, Harvard, MA,[6] and died 16 Dec 1840, aged 86 years.[7]
She married secondly, 21 Nov 1805, Bolton, MA, Peter Bender "of Marlborough,"[8] as his second wife. He was born about 1744, and died 6 Jan 1832, Marlborough, MA.[9] His first wife had been Abigail Brigham, whom he married 25 Feb 1767, Marlborough, MA.
Pierce says the following:[10]
- He was born in Harvard, where he resided until a young man, when he moved to Bolton, where he was married. When the Revolutionary war broke out he enlisted in a Bolton company as per agreement:
- We the subscribers belonging to Bolton in the County of Worcester do promise to pay unto John Whitney of Harvard in said county or order in consideration of his engaging into the Continental service for three years for us, 18 calves, 10 whereof are to be heifers, and 8 steers to be delivered to him within six weeks after his dis- charge from the Continental service (provided it be within 3 years) viz, if he be discharged in one year from date he is to receive said stock at one year and six weeks old and so for a longer or shorter time according to the same rule.
- N. B. - Said stock is to be six weeks older when he receives them than the time he is in the service, provided it be no longer than three years. Said stock to be of the middling size. [Nurses Annals of Lancaster, Mass.]
- In 1781 he was of Bolton and in the regiment commanded by Col. Josiah Whitney, of Harvard. His brother, Isaiah Whitney, was admr. of the estate of John Whitney, of Bolton. June 23, 1804, all the heirs are satisfied and sign as follows, viz.: Sarah Whitney, John Whitney, Milley Whitney, Caleb Moore, Ashsa Moore, Thomas Houghton and Aseneth Houghton. Caleb Moore was appointed guardian to Artemas Whitney, Eber, Sarah and Hannah, July 3, 1804.

Asenath Whitney, b. 16 Feb 1784;[20] m. 10 Sep 1803, Bolton, MA, Thomas Houghton.[21] vii. Artemas Whitney, b. 25 May 1786;[22] m. Rebecca Smith. viii. Eber Whitney, b. ca. 1789, Bolton, MA; living in 1804, when he had Caleb Moore appointed his guardian; d. 15 Dec 1843, Bolton, MA, aged 54 years, farmer, born in Bolton.[23] He was probably the "Mr." Eber Whitney whose int. were entered 31 Oct 1810, Charlestown, MA, with "Miss" Mehitable W. Nutting, both of Charlestown.[24] ix. Sarah Whitney, b. 5 Sep 1790;[25] "Sally" m. 22 Mar 1816, Bolton, MA, Willard Atherton, "of Goffstown, N.H."[26] x. Hannah Whitney, b. 6 Sep 1794;[27] m.
