John7 Whitney (John6, James5, James4, John3, Jonathan2, John1), son of John6 and Hannah (Holbrook) Whitney, was born 15 May 1770, Sherborn, MA,[1] and died 1817, Boston, MA. Probably he was the John Whitney who died, suddenly, 28 Aug 1816, Brookline, MA, aged 56 years.[2]

He "of Boston" married, 28 May 1797, Needham, MA, Clarissa Slack,[3] daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ruggles) Slack. She was born 20 May 1777, Needham, MA, and died 19 Jun 1861, New Bedford, MA, aged 84 years, of old age.[4]

John Whitney was born in Sherborn, MA, but removed to Boston in 1795. He was a merchant, and continued in business until his death, in 1817. He was a worthy and respectable man. He was senior member of the firm of Whitney & Dorr. He resided Boston, MA.

a. Charles Frederick Chandler, b. 6 Dec 1836, Lancaster, MA; m. 10 April 1861, Anna Craig. He studied at the Lawrence Scientific School, at Harvard, and abroad at the universities of Goettingen and Berlin, receiving in 1856 the degree of Ph. D. at Goettingen. On his return to the United States in 1857, he became assistant in Chemistry at Union college under Prof. Charles A. Joy, and a few months later succeeded to the duties of the full professorship. Here he remained until 1864, when he went to New York and was associated with Professors Egleston and Vinton in the establishment of the Columbia School of Mines. Dr. Chandler was elected to fill the chair of analytical and applied chemistry, and was also dean of the faculty. In 1877, on the reorganization of the school, he was made professor of chemistry, lecturing thenceforth in both the literary and scientific departments of Columbia. He became adjunct professor of chemistry and medical jurisprudence in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia in 1872, and in 1876 succeeded to the full professorship. In 1873 he was appointed president of the board of health of New York City, and again in 1877. He was also taken a prominent part in the various analyses of waters throughout the United States, and has delivered many lectures. He received the honorary degree of M. D. from the University of New York in 1873, and the same year LL. D. from Union College. He is a life member of all the prominent chemical societies in the world; resided 51 East 54th St., New York City.

c. William Henry Chandler, b. 13 Dec 1841, New Bedford, MA; m. 10 Jan 1873, Mary ElizaBeth Sayre. He was educated at Union college, and from 1861 to 1867 was chemist to various companies, and from 1868 to 1871 instructor of chemistry at the Columbia School of Mines. In 1871 he became professor of chemistry at Lehigh university, and in 1878 was made director of the library. He has received the degree of A. M. from Union college and that of Ph. D. from Hamilton college. He is a member of various chemical societies in this and other countries. In 1876 he was juror at the Centennial, and in 1878 at the Paris exhibition. Is at present connected with the Lehigh university, Bethlehem, PA.
