"John Whitney Dead At 66
"John J. Whitney of Spring street manager of the local Vermont State Employment Service office for the past several years and proprietor of the Whitney Cigar Store on North street for a long period, died suddenly Saturday morning at Putnam Memorial Hospital. He was 66 years old last June 30 and had been a lifelong resident of this village.
"The son of John J and Bridgid Whitney he had attended the local schools. The Whitney family was well known in the entertainment field and in his younger years Mr. Whitney was an accomplished tap dancer. His appearance in the various minstrels always contributed much. In his long time operation of the cigar store here he had acquired many friends and in recent years with the VSES office he had come in contact with many who always found him most affable and accommodating. He was the only manager in Vermont to receive the meritorious award and this citation testified to his faithfulness to duty.
"His affiliations had included St. Francis Holy Name Society and St. Francis de Sales Church. A member of the Vermont State Employees Association he had served as its president for one year.
"He was fondly known as Jack, by both young and old. All of the children in his immediate neighborhood or wherever he went remember him as Jack and he always had time for them enjoying their activities.
"He was a sports fan enjoying all competitions and also was a fishing enthusiast. His interest continued even in his later years.
"Mr. Whitney had suffered a heart attack several months ago and had been confined to the hospital for some time but had recently returned to his home where he was believed to be convalescing favorably. He was stricken with another attack early Saturday morning from which he failed to rally.
"Twice married, his first wife was Irene Honiker, who died in 1926. He married the former Mary Grant in 1929.
"Survivors besides his wife are six children, James F. Whitney, Pittsfield, Mass., John Joseph and Kathleen Whitney, Bennington, Mary Whitney, New York City and M-2 Grant Whitney, US Air Force, Madrid, Spain, one sister, Mrs. Mae McLaughlin, Bennington, eight grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
