Jonathan7 Whitney (Jonathan6, Joseph5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, John2, John1), son of Jonathan6 and Susanna (Norcross) Whitney, was born 15 Dec 1769, Watertown, MA,[1] and died Dec 1829, Watertown, MA.

Marriage intentions were published 22 Feb 1793, Watertown, MA, for him "Jr." "of Watertown" and Lucy Park "of Lincoln".[2] He "of Watertown" married 9 Apr 1793, Lincoln, MA, Lucy Parks,[3] daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Priest) Parks. She was born 10 Dec 1774, Lincoln, MA, and died in the winter of 1851, Woburn, Massachusetts. Possibly this is her death record: Lexington, MA, 17 Aug 1850, Lucy Whitney, aged 76, female, born in Lincoln, parents not given, of dropsy.[4]

They resided Watertown and Marshfield, Massachusetts. He had 18 children, 3 dying in infancy.

ii. Jonathan Whitney, b. say 1794, Watertown, MA. He was probably the Jonathan Whitney, Jr., "of Watertown" who m. Abigail Hammond.

iv. (daughter) Whitney, b. say 1800. Known from 1800 and 1810 census. Possibly the same as Susan (xiv) below.
v. Rebecca Pollock Whitney, b. about 2 Jun 1802, Watertown, MA; d. 25 Oct 1875, Salem, MA;[5] m. 17 Aug 1823, Dorchester, MA, David William Doughty,[6] son of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Ross) Doughty.
vi. Asa Whitney, b. ca. 1804, Watertown, MA; m. Rhoda Blaisdell.
vii. John Dudley Whitney, b. ca. 5 Feb 1804, Watertown, MA; m. Elizabeth Doughty.
viii. Nathaniel B. Whitney, b. 27 Jan 1806, Watertown, MA; m. Susan Edwards.
ix. David Whitney, b. 6 Nov 1806; m. Catherine Horn.
x. Lucy Whitney, b. say 1810, Watertown, MA. She was probably them "Miss" Lucy Ann Whitney "of Watertown" who m. (int. 24 Apr 1829, Quincy, MA) John S. Jones "a resident of Quincy".[7] Children:
a. Lucy A. Jones, b. 8 Jan 1832, Roxbury, MA; d. 12 Oct 1910, Hillsboro, NH, aged 78 years 9 months 4 days, who m. 1 Sep 1856, Lexington, MA, Andrew J. Crooker.
xi. Harriett W. Whitney, b. 15 Nov 1812, Watertown, MA; d. 4 Nov 1890, Medford, MA, aged 78, of Bright's disease;[8] m. 1 May 1836, Arlington, MA, Edmund Munroe Brown.
xii. Mary Ann Whitney, b. about 21 Nov 1815, Marshfield, MA; d. 29 Apr 1892, Malden, MA of paralysis[9]; m. Jonas Hadley, b. say 1802. Children:
a. Jonas Hadley, b. 1844, Lexington, MA; resided Malden, MA.

xiii. Adam Whitney, b. 14 Sep 1817, Marshfield, MA; m. Mary Ann Sylvester.

xv. Abbie Whitney, b. about 17 Apr 1821, Watertown, MA; d. 19 Jan 1876, Malden, MA, aged 54 years 9 months 2 days, of liver complaint;[10] m. 30 Apr 1846, West Cambridge, MA, John D. Grant, both of Cambridge.[11]

Notes

The marriage of a Miss Rebecca Pollock Whitney to Mr. Daniel Wm. Doughty, both residents of Dorchester, occurred 24 Aug 1823, Dorchester, MA, the same day and place that Miss Susannah Whitney, resident of Dorchester, and Capt. Elisha Harrington of Dorchester were married.[12] Both couples were married by Dr. T. M. Harris. This sounds like a double wedding, and raises the possibly that Rebecca and Susannah were sisters. Notice that Rebecca did have a sister Susan, of which nothing was known by Pierce when he wrote his book. Perhaps it was this Susan who married Capt. Elisha Harrington.

Susan's death record has been found: Charlestown, MA, died 6 Apr 1855, Susan Harrington, aged 54, resided Alms House, of consumption, female, married, born Watertown, parents Jonathan and Susanna Whitney.[13]

This make's Susan's birth in late 1800 or early 1801 in Watertown, MA. There is no record of a Susan Whitney born about 1800-1801 in Watertown in the available vital records. In fact, there is no record of births of any of the above children. While this seems to be a very promising lead, it would seem that there must be some kind of error here. If the brides were sisters, that would make the death record wrong in calling her mother Susanna, when she should have been called Lucy. If so, Susan, child xiv above, and the unnamed daughter, child iv above, may be the same person. If the brides weren't sisters, then the double wedding is hard to explain, and the parents Jonathan and Susan Whitney would be a mystery requiring further explanation. The only such couple we know of is the above Jonathan Whitney's parents, who are too old to have a daughter born about 1800, and in fact had a daughter Susanna born in 1766.
