Jonathan S. (John)⁸ Whitney (Sewell⁷, Jonathan⁶, (prob.) Jonathan⁵, Samuel⁴, John³, Benjamin², John¹), son of Sewell⁷ and Lucy (Craig) Whitney, was born 18 Jan 1828, Corinth, ME, and died 23 Feb 1907, Anoka, MN.

He married 13 Sep 1876, Hudson, WI, Mary Elsie (Cates) Smith, daughter of Andrew and Francis (---) Cates. She was born 14 Mar 1838, Springfield, ME, and died 19 Aug 1929, Minneapolis, MN. She had married firstly, 4 Oct 1863, Berlin, NH, Samuel Smith. Samuel died 17 May 1871, West Stewarttown, NH.

Jonathan S. Whitney is also found as John Whitney in various records.

Jonathan S. Whitney was a Civil War veteran.

Mary Elsie Cates is found in her family in the 1850 census of Carroll, ME. In the 1880 census, two step-sons are residing in the family: Charlie M. and Frank E. Smith, both born in NH.
