Jump to navigationJump to searchJoseph3 Whitney (John2, Henry1), son of John2 and Elizabeth (Smith) Whitney,[1] was born 1 March 1678[/9], Norwalk, CT,[2] and died after 21 Mar 1740/1, when his will was written, and probably soon after.[3]
He married, 6 Jul 1704, Norwalk, CT, Hannah Hoyt,[4] daughter of Zerubbabel and Hannah (Knapp) Hoyt.[5] She was born say 1685,[6] and died said 1734.[7]
Phoenix wrote the following:
- ... a mill-wright .... She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Norwalk, in 1725. After the death of his brother, John Whitney, he came in possession of the grist-mill, by deed from his father, stipulating to pay all of his debts, and give him one half of all tolls which the mill should earn during his father's lifetime. His will was dated 21 March 1740-41; and he probably died in Norwalk, in 1741.
- His great-grandson, James Whitney, when eighty years old, wrote an interesting letter, in which he speaks of him as follows: "He was a very excentric man, and I heard many ancedotes of him. One was as follows; he was called upon to name a street running from the foot of Pudding Lane to the bridge at the head of the harbor, by the mill; and this was his answer, --
- From Hyatt's hill to Thacher's mill,
- Was once a lonesome valley;
- Since it's become a place of fame,
- We'll call it Petticoat Alley,
- and it went by that name when I was a boy, I believe over one hundred years later."[8]
Will of JOSEPH WHITNE of Norwalk, Fairfield Co, CT
- Dated 21 Mar 1740/41, Proved 8 May 1741
- "In the name of God Amen ye 21st day of March An : Dom 1740/1 I Joseph Whitne of ye town of Norwalk in ye County of Fairfield & Colony of Connecticut Mill wright being very Sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and understanding thanks be given unto God. Therefore Calling unto mind ye Mortality of my Body and Knowing yt [that] it is Appointed for all men Once to Die, do make & Ordain this my last will and Testament that is to say principlally and first of all I give & and Recommend my Soul into ye hands of God yt gave it and my body I Recommend to ye Earth to be buried in Decent Christian Buriel at ye Discretion of my Extr Nothing Doubting but at ye Generall Resurrection I Shall Receive ye Same Again by ye Mighty power of God. And as Touching Such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give Demise [or Deuise] and Dispose of ye Same in ye following manner and form that is to say After my Just debts and funerall Charges are paid and Satisfyed. Imprimis I give and Bequeath to Hannah my Dearly Beloved wife ye use and Improvement of one half of my Dwelling house barn and Homstead Land and one third part of my Lands Druing her Naturall life and one third part of my Moveable Estate Excepting ye Cooper Tools hereafter given to my son David and ye money I lately Sold my Gristmill and lands thereto Appertaining for. of which sd Money I give to my sd wife Hannah One hundred pounds for Ever.
- "Item: I give and Bequeath to my Loving son Hezekiah Whitne his heirs & Assigns Besides what I have already give him by deed of gift vizt my five Roods of Land on ye East and one Rood one ye west of his Land where his Dwelling house Stands and ye land laid out to me in ye lower Division and ye Stripe of Land I bout of ye Proprietors Comtee all Lying Between ye highway and his part of ye boggs and meadow Called ye new dam Boggs Also my twelve Acres of Land Lying on ye East side of ye west Rocks. Also my part of ye Swamp and Upland Called Ketchums Swamp Lying Between Samll Kellogs and Caleb Hoits land, Containing three acres & half more or less Also yt hill of land laid out to me on ye North side ye path yt goes to ye Claboard Hill, in ye Lower Division being About Seven acres and lies west of Samll St Johns land on ye west side of Norwalk River, Also my lot of Land at ye Claboard Hill being in Quantity Seventeen Acres, also half of my part of ye boggs and meadow at ye new dam to him his heirs and Assigns for Ever - Item I give and Bequeath to my Loving son David Whitne his heirs and Assigns my twelve acres of Land at Silver mine so Called, Also my tract of Land lying at ye Whirtlebury Hills Containing One hundred and Eleven Acres Also my salt meadow in ye little meadows I bout of James Betts, also my Sticky plain lot I bout of moses Comstocke Containing Eight Acres more or less. Also half of my part of ye boggs and meadow at ye new dam and a set of Cooper Tools - Item I give and Bequeath to my Loving son Abraham Whitne his heirs and Assigns my dwelling home Barn and Homstead land my twenty Eight acres of Land Lying on ye west side of ye west Rocks, Also my salt meadow in ye Field on ye west side of Norwalk Harbour Called ye Pond - Always provided yt my Afore named Sons vizt Hezekiah, Joseph, David and Abraham their heirs or Assigns do not molest or hinder my Aforesd wife Hannah in ye Quiet and peaceable Improvement of what is before Bequested to her of half ye house Barn and Homstead Land and one third part of ye Landds Respectively Bequested to them According as she shall or may Incline thereto, During ye full term of her Naturall life - Item I give and Bequeath to my Loving Daughter Elizabeth ye wilfe of Miles Riggs One Cow and Six Sheep by which she will be made Equall with her Sisters Item: I give and Bequeath to my Loving Daughters vizt Hannah ye wife of Danll Keeler Thankfull ye wife of Ebenr Benedict, and Elizabeth ye wife of ye Aforesd Miles Rigs, ye Remander of My Moveable Estate Excepting ye Aforesd Mill Money to be Divided Eqully Among them, and to Each of them my sd Daughters One Hundred pounds Apeice of sd money, Item I further give & Bequeath to my three Sons vizt Joseph David and Abraham ye Remainder of my Mill Money So Distinguished to be Divided Equally Among them, and lastly I do hereby Constitute make and Ordain my two Friends vizt Saml Fitch and Mr Saml Jarvis my Executors of this my last will and Testament and I do hereby Utterly Disallow Revoke and Disannul all and Every Other former Testaments wills Legaices and Bequests and Executors by me in Any ways before named willed or Bequeathed Ratifying and Confirming this and no Other to be my last will and Testament.
