Family:Whitney, Joseph (1795-1871)

Joseph Whitney, parentage conjectured (see Notes below), was born 10 Jan 1795, MA, and died 10 Sep 1871, probably Oneonta, NY.

He married 13 Jun 1816, Sharon, VT, Mary Louise Hunter. She was born 14 Feb 1796, VT or NH, and died 20 Mar 1885.

They lived in Sharon, VT, Franklin, NY, and Oneonta, NY.

He served in the War of 1812, for which he, and then his widow, received a pension.

i.	William H. Whitney, b. 11 Nov 1818, NY; "Dr." d. 9 May 1897, Oneonta, NY; bur. Oneonta Plains Cemetery; m. Hannah -----.
iii.	Roswell Whitney, b. 15 Jul 1827, Oneonta, NY; d. 11 Apr 1886, Oneonta, NY; m. 28 Feb 1849, Oneonta, NY, Jerusha Rosebrook; res. Sherburne, NY, in 1850 and 1860, Oneonta in 1860 and 1880. See [1], [2], and [3].

Notes

He is probably the same as Joseph⁶ Whitney, son of Joshua⁵ and Dorothy (Knowlton) Whitney. That man was last seen in 1813 in Norwich, VT, one town east of Sharon, VT, and is of the right approximate age and birth state. Furthermore, that man's brother William⁶ Whitney lived in Sharon at the time of the above marriage. Still further, a Joshua Whitney appears in the 1820 census separated from Joseph by 10 families. This last is likely to be Joshua⁶, another brother.
