Family:Whitney, Nathan (1772-1858)

Nathan⁶ Whitney (Hezekiah⁵, Hezekiah⁴, Joseph³, John², Henry¹), son of Hezekiah⁵ and Sarah (Taylor) Whitney, was born 24 Jan 1772, Norwalk, CT, and died 22 Jul 1858, Roxbury, NJ.

He married, Autumn 1801, Esopus, NY, Anna York, daughter of John and Eve (Lyths) York. She was born 20 Jul 1769, Esopus, NY, and died 23 Jun 1841, New York, NY.

Phoenix says the following:

. . . a shoemaker; and, in later life, a farmer; went with his father to Wolcott, Vt., and from there, about 1797, to Esopus, N.Y., where, in the Autumn of 1801, he married Anna York, born in Esopus, 20 July 1769, dau. of John and Eve (Lyths) York. They dwelt in Esopus till 1832, when they moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to live with their son, Elisha Miller Whitney. She went to New York City to visit her daughter, at 118 Perry St, and there died, 23 June 1841, of an abscess of the bowels. He died, 22 July 1858, or old age and debility, while on a visit to his daughter at Lake Hopatcong, in Roxbury, New Jersey. They were buried in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, where a monument has been erected to their memory.

• 1810, Kingston, Ulster Co., NY: Nathan Whitney, 1 male over 45, 1 male 0-9, 1 female 26-44, and 1 female 0-9. This appears to be this family, even though the father was actually only 38 years old, not over 45.
• 1820, Esopus, Ulster Co., NY: Nathan Whitney, 1 male 26-44, 1 male 10-15, and 1 female 26-44.
• 1830, Esopus, Ulster Co., NY: Nathan Whitney, 1 male 50-59, 1 female 40-49, and 1 female 5-9.
• 1840, Poughkeepsie Village, Dutchess Co., NY: Elisha Whitney, 1 male 70-79, 1 male 30-39, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 0-4, 1 female 70-79, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 15-19, and 1 female 0-4; 1 engaged in commerce. The male and female 70-79 may be his parents Nathan and Anna.
