Family:Whitney, Richard (fl. 1560)
Richard Whitney, probably son of Richard and Elinor (-----) Whitney, flourished about 1560.
He married Elizabeth Cratford, daughter of John Cratford of Broadwas, Worcestershire, England.
- "About 1561 the Dean and Chapter leased the site of the manor to John Cratford and his daughters Elizabeth and Joan for £8 14s. 4d., and the third and tenth sheaf of corn growing on the arable land, these sheaves being afterwards commuted for £2 10s. 10d. (Chan. Proc. (Ser. 2), bdle. 57, no. 30) After John's death his daughter Joan wife of William Doughtie instituted proceedings to recover the property, which had been seized by her kinsman John Cratford, son of Humphrey Cratford of Croome, co. Worcester, and by her sister Elizabeth wife of Richard Whitney. It does not appear whether she was successful, but in 1636 Charles Cratford obtained from the dean and chapter a lease of the farm of the manor. (Close, 1650, pt. xxii, no. 44)"[1]
Sometime between 1558 and 1579, Richard and Elizabeth (Cratford) Whitney were sued by William and Joan (Cratford) Doughtie, Elizabeth's sister and brother in law, concerning lands in Broadwas.[2]
He was also probably the Whitney involved in the following additional court documents:
- C 3/53/45 - Doughtie v. Whitney: Worcester, 1558-1579
- C 3/54/34 - Dowtie v. Whitney: Worcester, 1558-1579
The following records appear to be related, but are apparently associated with Humphrey Whitney, who may have been a son of Richard Whitney:
- STAC 8/302/14 - Whitney and Cratforde v. Cratforde: Worc., 04/03/1603-27/03/1625
- STAC 8/302/15 - Whitney, Cratforde, and Deanes v. Cratforde, Chamberlayn, Moore, Bliszard, Arundell, Croftes, Stiche, Freeman, Higges, Welles, Jebbe, Trininge, Myntam alias Stocken and others: Worcs., 04/03/1603-27/03/1625
Children of Richard and Elizabeth (Cratford) Whitney, if any, are unknown.
i. (perhaps) Humphrey Whitney, Gent. He was involved in a lawsuit against Charles Cratford in 1611.[3]
