Family:Whitney, Robert (s1550-1616)
Robert Whitney, parentage unknown, born say 1550,[1] buried 27 Jan 1615/16, Wrenbury, Cheshire, England.[2] When he died, he left Hugh Whitney his grandson and heir.[3]
He married Mary Rutter, dau. of Thomas Rutter, of Kingsley. She was buried 29 Aug 1616, Wrenbury, Cheshire, England.[4] Her son Hugh being dead, administration was granted, Oct. 25, 1616, to her daughter and next of kin, Elizabeth, wife of Hugh Massey, of Denfield, Esq.[5]
He resided at Coole.[6]

Cholmondeley Salmon of Cowlane; 4) Barbara Massey, bp. 1598; 5) William Massey, bp. 1600, d 1668, m. 1622, Dorothy Cotton, dau. of George Cotton of Combermere, ch: George Massey, b. ca. 1633, d. 1666, m. - The Masseys, who held Tatton, near Knutsford, from the reign of Henry III. to 1475, possessed lands in Audlem down to 1457, when "Sir Geffrey Massy of Tatton, Knight," settled his lands in Audlem and Denfield on his illegitimate son John Massy, with whose descendants they remained until 1666 or later. Hugh Massey, the fifth in a direct line from John, married Elizabeth, sister of Hugh Whitney of Cool-lane in Wrenbury, near Audlem, and she in all probability was one of the same family with Geffrey Whitney. This Hugh Massey died in 1646, and was buried at Audlem.[13]

Notes
Both Robert Whitney and Cholmondeley Salmon are mentioned as being from "Cowlane". A search on Salmon uncovered a document (DWS/MTD/11/1) in which Cholmondeley Salmon, gent. is mentioned with lands at Coole Lane, Newhall Aston, co. Chester. Coole Lane is the name of the road that runs north to south through Coole Pilate, just east of Newhall, Aston, and Wrenbury, Cheshire.
