Family:Whitney, Roswell (1807-1886)
Roswell7 Whitney (Aaron Wilkes6, Ebenezer5, David4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of Aaron Wilkes6 and Sarah (Bennett) Whitney, was born 24 Aug 1807, Wilton, CT, and died 1 Nov 1886, aged 79 years 2 months. He was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, CT.[1]
He married, 24 Oct 1838, Wilton, CT, Eliza Whitlock, daughter of Matthew and Sarah (Denton) Whitlock. She was born 18 Nov 1811, Wilton, CT, and died 16 Jun 1899, aged 88 years 6 months 29 days. She was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, CT.[2]
Phoenix says the following:
- "... a farmer and fruit-grower .... They settled in Fairfield, Conn., and, in Ap. 1862, removed to a new settlement in Hammonton, N.J., whence they went, in 1866, to Old Bridge, N.J., and from there, in Ap. 1868, to Bridgeport, Conn. In Nov. 1869, they bought a place at Nichol's Farms, in Trumbull, Conn., where they were living in 1874."

Augustus Sherman Whitney, b. 8 Sep 1841, Fairfield, CT; d. 13 Jun 1864, Lincoln Hospital, Washington, DC; m. 10 Aug 1862, Hammonton, NJ, Polly Zidana Seeley, daughter of Banks and Sarah (-----) Seeley, b. NY; a farmer; settled at Hammonton, NJ, in 1861 .... He enlisted at Trenton, NJ, 2 Jan 1864, in Company E, 3d Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers; served in the Army of the Potomac, under General John Sedgwick; was wounded in the battle of The Wilderness; was taken to Washington, DC, where he died in Lincoln Hospital, 13 Jun 1864; and was buried in Washington. He had no children. She m.(2) ----- Hoppin, and settled at Hammonton, NJ.
