Family:Whitney, Samuel (s1648-1722)
Samuel2 Whitney (Samuel1), son of Samuel1 and Catherine (-----) Whitney,[1] was born say 1648, Bermuda[2] and died 22 Sep 1722, Saint George, Bermuda.[3]
He married, circa 1674 or 1675, a wife. Whether she was the same as the wife Sarah (-----) mentioned in his 1722 will is unclear.[4]
In his father's undated will, which was probated 10 Apr 1674, Samuel Whitney was given land "In Davids Island In the Bermoodas" as well as "my Gould Ring one broad Cloth Coate and my Sea Chest".[5]
On 12 Jan 1674/75, "Samuell Whitney and his wife" were found "guilty of the foul sin of incontinency before marriage" and were fined "3 months or 50s" by a Grand Inquest.
It appears that Samuel Whitney moved to the land given to him in his father's will as he was listed as residing on St. David's Island and/or in St. George's Tribe/Parish in all of the records.
In a 1712 deed, "Samuel Whitney the Elder of St George Parish, Planter, gave land to his son Samuel Whitney the Younger, also of Davids Island, mariner.[6]
- 23 May 1712 - Deed of Gift, Samuel Whitney the Elder of St George Parish, Bermuda, Planter, to "my Son" Samuel Whitney the Younger, also of Davids Island, Mariner, for fifty pounds current money, and "for the Paternal Love and Regard which I have towards him and that he may be the Better Enabled to be aiding and Assisting to me in my Declining years being now grown very aged and Feeble", all his mansion house, land, plantation where he now dwells, timber, amounting to "Five and Twenty Acres"... /s/ Samuel his X mark Whitney Senr... seizin given by deliver of "one Turf and one Twig and the key of the Door of the Mansion house to Samuel Whitney the Younger by his abovesaid Father in Presence of us John Hilton, James Askew"... Samuel Whitney acknowledged receipt of consideration money in full in the form of "one Spanish Ryal [real de plata] Silver money"...Attest by Askew before Gov. Henry Pulleine 13 Jan. 1713/14 and ordered recorded by Geo. Tucker Secy

- 18 Sept. 1722 - Samuel Whitney. Resided: Parish of St. Georges, Davids Island (Bermuda). Occupation: Planter. Will Proved: 10 Apr. 1730. Entire estate to "my well beloved Wife Sarah Whitney", divided at her death equally to daughters Love Whitney and Mary Codd [sic]. Executrices: wife and both daughters. Signs by mark. Witnesses: Asser Sharpe, Thomas Sharpe, Geo: Fox. Presented before John Pitt, Governor and Ordinary.
Children of Samuel2 Whitney and possibly his wife Sarah (-----), list possibly incomplete:
i. Samuel3 Whitney, born say 1680. Although he wasn't listed in his father's will, he had previously been deeded land from his father, which may have been considered his share. ii. Love Whitney.[8] iii. Mary Whitney.[9] She married ----- Codd.[10]
Notes
Because Samuel was given the land on St. David's Island in St. Georges Tribe that his father had owned, and his only known brother David was given land in Pembroke, it is likely, but by no means certain, that records in St. Georges Tribe belong to descendants of this Samuel. An analysis of available records indicates that there were as many as 5 Samuels in St. George's, including this Samuel and his father.
