Family:Whitney, Samuel Brown (1817-a1880)

Samuel Brown7 Whitney (William6, Elijah5, John4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of William6 and Prudence (Brown) Whitney, was born 28 Jan 1817, Norwich, VT, and died 4 Feb 1898, Boston, MA, aged 82 years 7 days, of chronic tuberculosis.[1]

He married firstly, 4 Nov 1846, Boston, MA, Sarah Brown.[2] She was born 22 Feb 1824, Edgecomb, ME, and died 17 Feb 1873.

He married secondly, 9 Dec 1884, RI, Camilla Hoit (Merrill) Gay,[3] daughter of Jacob and Maria (Tibbetts) Merrill. She was born May 1828, Turner, ME, and died 21 Jan 1909, Boston, MA, aged 80 years, of valvular disease of heart.[4] She had married firstly, before 1850, George H. Gay, born about 1827, MA, and died after 1865. They had lived in Woodford Co., KY, in 1850; in Red Wing, Goodhue Co., MN, in 1860 and 1865.

When a young man he moved to Boston where he has since resided. Soon after the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the 11th Massachusetts Battery which was attached to the 9th corps, Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, Army of the Potomac. He was in the battle of the Wilderness and was with Grant when Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Was in many battles and in the siege of Petersburg for nine months. He has led an active business life; resided Boston, MA, 17 Edinboro St.

iii. Georgiana Lillian Whitney, b. 25 Mar 1853 [Pierce] or 15 Mar 1853, Boston, MA [given name omitted];[7] d. 6 Oct 1871, Boston, MA, aged 18 years 6 months 11 days, of phthisis.[8]
