Family:Whitney, Shubael (1772-1852)

Shubael⁶ Whitney (Asa⁵, Joshua⁴, William³, Joshua², John¹), son of Asa⁵ and Sarah (Barnes) Whitney, was born 15 Aug 1772, Preston, CT,^[1] and died 5 Sep 1852, Wadsworth, OH.

He "of Preston" married in 25 Jun 1795, Preston, CT, Sarah Mitchell "of Groton",^[2] daughter of George and Content (Allen) Mitchell. She was born 10 May 1776 and died 16 Oct 1855. She was the daughter of Mr. George Mitchell, of Maryland, who was born in Scotland, and who went north with General Washington, with whom he served as aide-de-camp. His wife was Content Allen, of New London, CT. He was killed at the time of the Revolutionary war at White Plains, New York.

He resided Groton, CT, and Wadsworth, OH.

George Mitchell Wright, b. 8 Aug 1847; m. 18 Oct 1876, Akron, OH, Lucy Josephine Hale, b. 14 Mar 1854, the third daughter of James Madison and Sarah (Allen) Hale; res. Tallmadge, OH. George Mitchell Wright was born in Tallmadge Township, Summit County, OH. He was educated at the public schools and Tallmadge Academy, and at Western Reserve College, but left college early in the course. Studied law for two years and a half at Akron, OH, with Hon. Sidney Edgerton (ex-chief justice of Idaho, and ex-governor of Montana), and Hon Jacob A. Kohler (late attorney-general of Ohio); was admitted to the bar in Ohio, 16 Jun 1873; practiced law at Akron, OH, continuously from that time until August, 1882, being for several years in partnership with Hon. Henry Mckinney (who was afterward a common pleas judge of Cuyahoga County, OH). For several years, while studying and practicing law, pursued studies in geology, lithology, mineralogy, chemistry, and physics; was appointed assistant geologist, United States Geological Survey, Aug 1882; engaged in geological field work in Nevada and California during field season of 1882, on scientific staff of Division of the Great Basin, U.S.G.S.; stationed at headquarters of this division, at Salt Lake City, Utah, during winter of 1882-83; transferred to scientific staff of Yellowstone National Park Division, U.S.G.S., Jun 1883; during field seasons of 1883, 1884, and 1885, engaged in geological field work in Yellowstone National Park, and in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and during the winters of these years, stationed at New York City, NY, and Washington, DC, for study and scientific investigations; specialties in geological work and investigations, the study of volcanic and crystalline rocks, and problems of volcanology, and also some special work in glacial geology and general surface geology; resigned as assistant geologist, U.S.G.S., 30 Jun 1886, and resumed practice of law at Akron, Ohio, where he has continued in active practice since that time. Mr. Wright was commissioned second lieutenant in the First Regiment of Light Artillery, Ohio National Guard, 21 Jun 1892, the only organized regiment of light artillery in the United States at the present time (1895). He is a member of the Philosophical Society of Washington, DC; an associate member of the Military Service Institution of the United States, and also of the United States Cavalry Association. He is also a member of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and of the Alpha Delta Phi college fraternity. He has taken and continues to take great interest in miltary affairs, and has contributed articles on military subjects to The Journal of the United States Artillery (Fortress Monroe, Virginia) and The Journal of the Miltary Service Institution (Governor's Island, New York Harbor).
