Thomas Whitney, parentage unknown, was born circa 1805, NC and died sometime after 1880.
He married, circa 1845, Margaret Merritt, b. ca. 1810, NC.
He may have had a younger brother named Charles Whitney, b. ca. 1830, NC, a blacksmith residing in his household in 1880.

i. Augustus R. Whitney, b. ca. 1846, NC. ii. Charles Whitney, b. ca. 1856, NC. iii. Samuel Whitney, b. Oct 1856, Hyde Co., NC; d. 21 Jul 1916, New Bern, NC, aged 59 years 9 months.
