William5 Whitney (William4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of William4 and Mary (Whitmore) Whitney, was born 5 Feb 1725, Killingly, CT,[1] and died after 1766.[2]

William married firstly, 4 Jun 1747, Salisbury, CT, Arcoucher Dutcher,[3] daughter of Christoffel and Gertruyd (Herty) Dutcher, "both of Canaan", by Rev. Elisha Webster of Canaan. She was born circa 1727, Athens, NY. It is possible that she was "Jannetje", born, 7 Feb 1729, Athens, NY. She was variously recorded as Arcoucher, Arconche, Angenietje, Jane, and Jannetje.

Pierce says the following:[4]

m. 2d Jane -----. He was born probably at Killingly, though some traditions have it at Canaan; was married at Salisbury as "William WHITNEY from the east part of Connecticut." He was a farmer.

Children of William5 and Arcoucher (Dutcher) Whitney:

i. Heretry or Hentry6 Whitney (a daughter!), b. 4 Aug 1748, Canaan, CT.[5] See notes below.
ii. Mary Whitney, b. 24 Aug 1750, Salisbury, CT;[6] d. before 1759.
iii. Christopher Whitney, b. 28 Sep 1751, Salisbury, CT;[7] m. Mary Tichnor.
iv. Cornelius Whitney, b. 31 Dec 1753, Salisbury, CT;[8] m. Hannah Green.
v. Ruloff Whitney, b. circa 1755.
vi. John Whitney, b. 5 Oct 1757, Salisbury, CT.[9]
vii. Mary Whitney, b. 1 Oct 1759, Salisbury, CT.[10] She may or may not be the Mary Whitney who m. 27 Feb 1777, Ridgefield, CT, Silas Pierce of Philipse Patent, NY.[11]
viii. Solomon Whitney, b. 11 Mar 1763, Salisbury, CT.[12]
ix. Jane Whitney, b. 22 May 1766, Salisbury, CT.[13]

Notes

His eldest child seems likely to be the same as Charity Whitney, who married, 15 Oct 1766, Salisbury, CT, Joshua Sirdam, "both of Salisbury".[14] When her husband died and "Charaty Surdam" was appointed administratrix of his estate, 6 Aug 1777, Christopher Whitney was a witness to her bond. This would be appropriate for a brother to do, and certainly indicates a close family relationship between the two. This theory was proposed by Ryan Quinn in e-mail on 1 Jun 2017.
