William6 Whitney (Sylvanus5, Eliasaph4, Nathan3, John2, Henry1), son of Sylvanus5 and Betty (Hoyt) Whitney, was born 17 Jan 1783, Oyster Bay, NY, and died 21 Jun 1838, St. John, NB.
He married, 30 Sep 1818, Gagetown, NB, Elizabeth Seely, daughter of Abijah and Johanna (Bates) Seely, of New Canaan, CT. She was born 7 Jul 1791, Stamford, CT, and died 14 Aug 1859, St. John, NB.
Phoenix says the following:
- William Whitney, b. at Lloyd's Neck, Oyster Bay, L. I., 17 Jan. 1783; a merchant; landed with his parents, in 1783, at St. John, N. B., where he ever after dwelt, and died 21 June 1838. He was buried in the Church Cemetery. He married, 30 Sept 1818, at Gagetown, N. B., Elizabeth Seely, dau. of Abijah and Johanna (Bates) Seely, of New Canaan, Conn. She was born at Stamford, Conn., 7 July 1791; and died, 14 Aug. 1859, at St. John.

i. William Henry7 Whitney, b. 3 Nov 1819, St. John, NB; d. 6 Jul 1829, St. John, NB, and was buried in the City Cemetery. ii. Elizabeth Whitney, b. 1 Jan 1822, St. John, NB; d. 18 Jan 1822, St. John, NB, and was buried in the City Cemetery. iii. George Walter Whitney, b. 29 Jan 1823, St. John, NB; m. Margaret Ann James. iv. James Augustus Whitney, b. 15 Sep 1825, St. John, NB; m. Eliza Crear. v. Henry Bates Whitney, b. 15 Jun 1830, St. John, NB; was living at Kentville, NS, in Nov 1873, unmarried.
