Family:Whitney, Zaccheus (1707-1740)
Zaccheus4 Whitney (Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), son of Jonathan3 and Sarah (Hapgood) Whitney,[1] was born 16 Nov 1707, Sudbury, MA,[2] and died 14 Mar 1739/40, Bedford, MA.[3]
Zaccheus married, 23 May 1734, Concord, MA, Mary Wheeler "both of Concord",[4] daughter of Timothy and Lydia (Wheeler) Wheeler.[5] She was born 10 Aug 1704, Concord, MA,[6] and died 15 Jul 1742, Bedford, MA. She married secondly, 1 Jan 1740/41, Bedford, MA, William Grimes,[7] son of William and Mary (Simonds) Grimes, born about 1706, probably Lexington, MA, and died 3 Nov 1766, Lexington, MA.
He left a will on 10 Mar 1739 at Bedford, MA; of Bedford, glazier; wife Mary; sons Zaccheus Whitney and Jonathn. Whitney, both under the age of apprenticeship; brother Shadrach Whitney, executor; witnesses John Paige, William Marshall, and Timothy Wheeler. On 31 Mar 1740, Bedford, MA, widow Mary Whitney presented the will for probate. On 2 Apr 1740, Bedford, MA, his inventory was taken by Israel Putnam, Mr. Joseph Fitch of Bedford, and Mr. Ebenezer Cutler of Weston.[8]
Pierce says the following:[9]
- In 1725, when but 18 years of age, with his brother Isaac he enlisted and served in the Colonial militia, and took part in many of the skirmishes and battles with the Indians. He was left in 1725 at the fort in Ossipee ("the river of the pines") by Capt. John LOVEWELL. He was probably killed by the Indians. All the earlier historians erroneously refer to him as "Zachariah of Concord."
- His will was made in 1730; his brother, Shadrach, was executor. He was a glazier by trade, and at his decease owned lands in Township No. 3, on the easterly side of Conn river.
