Joel6 Whitney (Micah5, Abel4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), son of Micah5 and Hannah (Cobb) Whitney, was born 7 May 1787, Gorham, ME, and died 22 May 1852, Saint Paul, MN.

He married firstly, Jun 1815, Phillips, ME, Sally Dyer. She was born 10 May 1789, Malden, MA, and died May 1834, Phillips, ME.

He married secondly, 1836, Farmington, ME, Sarah (Ramsdell) Crompton. She died at Plymouth, ME.

He married 3d, 23 May, 1840, Unity, ME, Betsey (Chase) Ayer. She had married firstly, Benjamin Ayer, Jr.

He was born in Gorham, ME, married at Phillips, where he was a general merchant. In 1838 he moved to Plymouth, ME, where, after a residence of ten years, he moved to Portland. In 1851, he moved to St. Paul, where he died the following year. He was buried at Phillips. He resided Phillips, Plymouth and Portland, ME, and Saint Paul, MN.

Children of Joel6 and Sally (Dyer) Whitney:

i. Sophia Dyer7 Whitney, b. 1 Jan 1816; m. 5 Dec 1832, Moses Sherburne; resided Saint Paul, MN.
ii. Charles T. Whitney, b. 18 Sep 1817; m. Martha C. Thayer.
iii. Julia Ann Whitney, b. 19 Jun 1819; d. Nov 1834, Phillips, ME.
iv. Joel E. Whitney, b. 18 May 1822; m. Elsie Ayer.
v. Eliza Jane Whitney, b. 20 Jun 1824; d. Apr 1866, Saint Paul, MN.
vi. Sarah Gustanza Whitney, b. 2 Apr 1826; d. 23 Mar 1848, Plymouth, ME.
vii. Andrew J. Whitney, b. 20 Apr 1828; m. 1855, Bertha L. Burbanks; resided Kansas City, MO.
viii. Eliab Latham Whitney, b. 6 Jun 1830; d. 8 Feb 1868; m. 1854, Helen M. Burbanks; resided Saint Paul, MN.

Notes

Trinity, ME, apparently does not and never did exist, despite the statement by Pierce that Joel's third marriage occurred there. That marriage is recorded as occurring 23 May 1840, Waldo Co., ME. Two towns in Waldo County had names similar to Trinity: Unity and Liberty. Since Betsey Chase was born in Unity, ME, and her first husband Benjamin Ayer, Jr., was enumerated there in the 1830 census, this is undoubtedly the correct location.
