Luther James9 Whitney (Edson8, Luther7, Nathaniel6, Samuel5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Edson8 and Martha (Hill) Whitney, was born 1841, Hancock County, IL, and died 2 Jan 1903, Spokane, WA.

He married 31 October 1869, Leavenworth, KS, Sarah Jane Palmer, daughter of John F. Palmer and Melvina A. Proctor. [ref marriage license] She was born 1851, IN.

Luther worked mining Utah 1870 and Black Hills (DT) in 1875. Lived St Paul 1876. Became Post Trader Fort Abraham Lincoln, DT 1876. Settled area Miles City, MT 1877 with wife Jane and son Edson b. 1871 Kansas. Built first house Miles City. Merchant, land investor, cattleman, sheep rancher.
