Martha5 Whitney (Jeremiah4, Nathan3, John2, Henry1), daughter of Jeremiah4 and Eva (Youngs) Whitney, was born 19 Oct 1766, CT, and died 28 Jul 1855, Providence, NY, aged 88 years.

She married, John Van Ness. He was born 8 Oct 1765, Washington Co., NY, and died 24 Jan 1832, Jerusalem, NY. He was buried in a family cemetery, Jerusalem, NY.

He was a farmer. They lived in Milton, Galway, and Providence, NY, and, in the Spring of 1824, after the birth of all their children, moved to Bluff Point, in Jerusalem, NY.

Busti, NY, son of Ezra and Ruth (Morehouse) Abbot, of Milton. They settled in Westmoreland, NY; moved thence to Newburgh, NY; from there, in Apr 1815, to Dover, NJ; and, in 1824, to Busti, NY.
ii. Van Andrus Van Ness, b. 21 Jan 1787, Milton, NY; d. 12 Jan 1833, Bluff Point, NY; bur. Bluff Point, NY; unmarried.
iii. Mary Van Ness, b. 17 May 1788, Milton, NY; d. 28 Mar 1872, Providence, NY; m. Jeremiah Clark, brother of Benedict Clark, below; settled in Providence, NY.
iv. Susanna Van Ness, b. 6 Dec 1789, Milton, NY; d. 4 Jul 1858, Providence, NY; m. Benedict Clark, brother of Jeremiah Clark, above; settled at Providence, NY; no children.
v. Phebe Van Ness, b. 5 Jul 1791, Milton, NY; d. 1867; m. Abram Freeland; res. near Syracuse, NY, and afterward at, or near, Utica, MI.
vi. Hannah Van Ness, b. 31 May 1794, Milton, NY; d. 20 Nov 1824, Providence, NY; m. Providence, NY, James Shields, of Providence, b. Northern Ireland, d. 20 Mar 1849, Galway, NY, son of James Shields, a farmer, who me to America, with his father, when eight years old. They settled at Providence. They were buried in Clark's Cemetery, at Providence. He had a second wife, by whom he had a daughter, who married Jonathan Van Trump, of Gloversville, NY.
vii. Catharine Van Ness, b. 12 Oct 1795, Milton, NY; d/ 12 Oct 1866, Chautauqua, NY, aged 71 years; bur. Sherman, NY; m. 1829, Penn Yan, NY, Henry G. Allen, b. 1790, Clinton, NY, d. 16 May 1871, Wellington Square, ON, bur. Wellington Square, ON, son of Gideon and Elizabeth (Perry) Allen, of Providence, NY. He was a tanner, currier, and shoemaker. After dwelling in Providence and Northampton, NY, they moved to Maine, where they lived for fifteen years, and then removed to Indiana, and thence to Canada.
viii. Pamela Van Ness, b. 6 Aug 1797, Greenfield, NY; d. aft. Jun 1875, when living at Cedar Creek Hundred, DE; m. 25 Jan 1818, Providence, NY, Lodewick Putman Shew, b. 15 Feb 1792, Johnstown, NY, d. 30 Oct 1870, Providence, NY, bur. Northampton, NY, son of Jacob and Hannah (Putman) Shew, of Northampton, NY; a tanner and, afterward, a farmer; settled Providence, NY; after his death she moved to Cedar Creek Hundred, DE.
ix. John Van Ness, b. 2 Feb 1799, Providence, NY; d. 15 Aug 1864, Providence, NY; m. 25 Nov 1819, Providence, NY, Barbara Fones, b. 29 Jan 1795, Broadalbin, NY, d. aft. Apr 1876, dau. of William and Dorcas (Sherman) Fones, of Wales, NY, a farmer. They dwelt at Providence till 22 May 1824; at Jerusalem, NY, till 27 Apr 1826; at Benton, NY, till 1 Apr 1830; and then returned to Jerusalem. She was living at Benton Centre, NY, with her son, Andrew Oliver Van Ness, in Apr 1876.
x. Anna Van Ness, b. 21 May 1803, NY; d. 16 Aug 1827, Bluff Point, NY; bur. Bluff Point, NY; unmarried.
xi. Jeremiah Van Ness, b. 17 Sep 1805, NY; m. ----- Rouse; res. Geneva, WI, in 1875.
xii. Ezra Nelson Van Ness, b. 2 Mar 1807, Galway, NY; m. 23 Aug 1827, Bluff Point, NY, Ann Herrick, b. 4 Jun 1804, Sherburne, NY, d. 5 May 1858, bur. Westfield Cemetery, dau. of Joseph and Hannah (Northrop) Herrick, of Bluff Point, a farmer. They settled at Bluff Point; removed, in 1833, to Aurelius, NY; in 1842, to Sherman, NY; in May 1843, to Westfield, NY; in May 1844, to Mayville, NY; and in March 1870, returned to Westfield, where he was living, in March 1875.
