Welcome to the group, Alan. Watch your e-mail for a posting within the next couple of days. There's been so much activity that I'm trying my best to consolidate some of the messages.
The entire Whitney OnLine Association membership list (a purely informal & official group) will be shown in the "distribution list" of my next e-mail message.
Let's hope some of our members will be able to help you get some leads on where to look next for your Whitneys, & you might be able to help them!

Subject: Whitney thru AOL Whitney
Rec'd e-mail on Whitney's and have been looking for an Edward Roger Whitney b. abt. 1868 NB, CDN. Perhaps his father was Edward Roger Whitney and there is some speculation that they had migrated from or were from close to Holten,Maine. (So mother said.) His mother was Mary Harris, nothing else known. My g-father came to Seattle, WA abt. 1897, married Mary Ellen Simpson in 1898 (dau of Abraham Simpson, b. 1845, from Warning, NB, Cdn. and Mariah Doyle, from Ballymartin, Co. Carlow, Ire.). I think he had a brother, Harry Whitney who was a judge in Michigan, USA., about 1920's?. Any information would be fantastic!!! Have been looking for this connection for years and this is the closest that I have come to. Hope spring has finally arrived there. The cherry blossems and humming birds have been here for over a month!! You are from the NE?

FROM CARADWEN VON BRASKAT who is connected to John & Elinor: Hello! I wish to join the online Whitney group. My info is as follows. Name: Caradwen von Braskat (this is my maiden name) DOB: April 12, 1970, Berkeley, California E-mail: Compuerve: [email protected] (or [email protected]) Snail mail: 648 Haight Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501 Occupation: currently a receptionist for an educational nonprofit in San Francisco Prog. used: Personal Roots fomr Expert Software (yes, I know I need to upgrade) How long? I have been actively looking into my family since about 1986 or 1987. But I am fortunate that the "bug" bit my family quite hard a while ago. =) Whitney goal? I have my direct line back to John & Elinor, and I know that John's father was Thomas Whitney and his mother was Mary Bray. I would like more info, if possible on his siblings. I also know that his grandfather was Robert Whitney. Also, There was a Sir Robert Whitney who was knighted by Queen Mary (Eliz. #1 older sister) in 1562 or so who was married to a woman named Sybil Baskerville. I would like to clarify it whether or not the two afforementioned Roberts are the same person.
I guess that that is it for now. Sorry if I went on for a bit, but this is very exciting! I wait with baited breath for your reply.= Caradwen von Braskat

Hi, Karen, Sorry for the slow response to your question as to publisher, etc., of the book, The Whitneys. I received many notes of thanks for sending the copy of the preface to all you good Whitneys. By copy of this note, in case anyone else wants more information about the book, here it is:
The Whitneys--an information portrait, 1635-1975 Author: Edwin Palmer Hoyt Publisher: Weybright and Talley, New York, 1976 (280 pages, 8 leaves of plates, ill.)
Karen, with this information, any library should be able to find out for you if you can borrow it on interlibrary loan (if they don't have it); or any book store should be able to help you find out if it is available for purchase anywhere. Good luck.
I've added our new members to my list. Welcome! If any of you want me to send a copy of the preface of this book, let me know.

Subject: Whitney: your opinion please...
Hello all again, just your local pest!
In July of 1995, I spent about 9 hours in my local LDS Family History Center on their computer. I printed out every page of stuff I could that had anything even remotely interesting on it. I would like to post some of the tidbits that make me go "HUH?" and see what you all think, or if any of you can confirm or deny.
On one printed page I have it state John Whitney's (the immigrant) Year of birth as 1600. I ahev also seen 1589, 1592 and 1599. It is my understanding that he was indeed born in 1589, baptised in 1592 and that hi wife, Elinor, was born in 1599. Any comments?
Another page I have mentions that this John was of Flemish heritage. It has been my understanding that the Whitney's, for the most part, are an old Saxon family. Any other comments?
Another page I have mentions pedigree sheets for John which presumably cover from 714 to 1919. Has anyone seen these or can anyone comment on them?
Yet another page mentions "the descendants of Sir Robert de Whitney" pedigree from William I, Duke of Normandy, 1066-1592." Anyone seen this one?
And last but not least (for now), another page mention a microfilm
of a work done in 1964 by a Arthur M. Cobleigh which claims to trace a
direct line pedigree from Adam to John Whitney. It was apparently
taken from data found in the book "One Hundred thirty-eight generations from
Adam" by George E. Congdon. It mentions Irish, Scottish and English
royal lines and the name "Baskerville" so who knows how accurate some
of it might be? Has anyone seen this one either?
Anyway, I would realy like to know the opinions of some of this info. Before I try to obtain it through the inter-library process. I must say that it all ignites my curiosity. If any of you would like the catalog numbers for the page copies mentioned above, they are conveniently printed on the page, I will be more than happy to give them to you.
Sorry if my posts today seem scattered, but its been a weekend, a crazy one.
My thanks to all in advance.
Caradwen

Subject: Inquiries on Whitney
Here are some "queries" to present to our group. I know these folks would appreciate any info to help their searches, so respond directly via e-mail if you can help! :-) Jeanne
>From Fred R. Whitten ([email protected]) who has an interesting question: Jeanne: Torrey, on pages 811 & 812 seems to indicate that WHITNEY & WHITTEN were/are interchangeable, as does Savage.
I wonder if anyone in your WHITNEY-On-Line group can shed any light on the following from Torrey, page 812?
WHITTEN/WHITNEY, Thomas (-1674) & 1/wf Adrian (CORK) MOORECOCK, w. Henry; Egerton, Co. Kent, 01-Oct-1625; Plymouth
WHITTEN, Thomas (-1674) & 2/wf Winfred HARDING (-1660); 22-Nov-1639; Plymouth.
WHITNEY/WHITTON, Thomas (-1674) & 3/wf Patience (morton) [FAUNCE] (-1691, ae 76); b 01-Mar-1676; Plymouth.
As per above, Savage contends that WHITTEN became, in many cases, WHITNEY as people moved toward the West.
I know of two brothers in Orange/Ulster Counties, NY, distant ancestors of mine, that used both spellings.
A shot in the dark, looking for light.
Thanks, Fred R. Whitten, Savannah, GA

Dr Elisha Whitney b 1797 married Sally Brown dau of Humphrey Brown and Hanna Dodge, 2. Sally Whitney married James Lyman Morgan.

- >From : Merton L. Alexander, [email protected] I do not know if we have communicated previously or not. I have a Philena Whitney who died in June 1819 in Cayuga Co., NY. She would have been married about 1810 to Nathan Loveland, perhaps of Livingston Co., NY. They had children named Olive, George and Ellen. Do you have any clues to her parents? Thanks.
