I am leaving this Sunday for a week in Cancun, Mexico. I know I will miss working with all of the marvelous volunteers on the project, but I'll do my best to keep my mind off of it by making use of the swim-up bar in the sun-drenched pool or perhaps out on the beach. I would very much like to get the remaining six sets adopted before I leave. If you can take one more set, I'd really appreciate it. Special thanks to Karen Nugier who adopted the last 5 photocopied sets this morning! If you've completed a set and are double checking it before sending it in, be sure to send it to me by Saturday if you want it to make it online before I leave. Anything that is sent after that will have to wait a week in my inbox. Thanks again to all of the volunteers! We've already helped several people make connections. Just think how valuable this will be when complete! Tim

The eldest son, John Henry Whitney is my great grandfather. His obituary listed his place of birth as being in Nebraska. His birthday was September 1847. He was father to Floyd John, born December 15, 1887.
I really would like to know if anyone is familar with Dr. John Henry Whitney, who resided most of his life in Wisconsin.
Almost all of my information is taken from the national Archives. There is a branch here in Seattle.

Dear WRG:
I picked this up on the NE-Roots list tonight, and thinking I remembered at least one or two of you were still searching in Kansas, I decided to copy and forward some of the message.
I know the subject of this message is a little off-topic, but I just had
to announce that the work is complete on the History of the State of Kansas edited by Wm. G. Cutler and published in 1885. In May, 1995, I helped to get started putting this 1,600-page book on the WWW because of its inherent interest for anyone with Kansas roots, and also because it has so many biographical sketches in it with records dating back generations in some cases.
There's a search engine in place on the site so you can search for
links to a particular surname, even if you might not know where in Kansas a long-lost cousin, great-uncle or great-aunt settled. Is there a record of someone in your family that "went West," considered a synonym in the 1800s for having died, because many people never saw their loved ones again after they went West. You might find a record of this family member at:
http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/books/cutler/
I hope this helps someone.

I searched the archives for Adeline, but was unable to find any matches. I next searched the census index for 1850 Iowa and found that there were only 8 Whitney families listed. Since it appears your family was either in Iowa or Nebraska at this time, I would start by looking at each of these families to see if any of them had wives named Adeline and a son John age 2 or 3. If that fails, try the same approach in Nebraska.
If you wish to cut down the number of families you must search, look at the 1860 index and see which families were still there. Your family had obviously moved by 1860 and so you could probably rule out any of these families that are still listed in Iowa in 1860. Unfortunately, we do not have the 1860 Iowa or Nebraska census index information. If you get this data at a library, would you be so kind as to photocopy or transcribe the Whitneys listed for our archives?

Dear WRG's,
I 've learned of an apparently undocumented Whitney family( at
least to our group) that lived in CUMBERLAND (town) ME, which was part of North Yarmouth until the early 1820's. Can anyone help to identify them?
This was found in a note from Ina Loring Norton (1896-1983) to the
Falmouth ME Historical Society: "My mother was CARRIE WHITNEY-her father was JAMES WHITNEY- his father was also JAMES WHITNEY."
Her father's brothers were ALEXANDER, ULYSSES & AMMI(of Falmouth).
She states that there were seven Whitney brothers[in all] who came to the West Cumberland area(no dates given, or indication from whence they came).
I found AMMI in Cumberland 1830,Falmouth 1850, Portland 1870
census lists. JAMES and ALEXANDER, in Cumberland Census lists , are buried in Morrison Hill Church Cemetery along with thirteen other Whitneys born ca 1788-1833. None of these Whitneys are related to Abner Whitney's descendents in No. Yarmouth, Falmouth, or Gorham, as I have found in research[my line].
I wonder if this family produced either the mysterious JABEZ who
came from Cumberland at the time of his marriage to Abigail Milk Wheeler(Michael Poston's) or Aaron who married in ME, Betsy Hildreth(Evelyn Brown's)?
One last comment-- I found a James Whitney on an Ancestry
database"Passenger Arrivals in the United States 1819-1820" :Whitney, James
- male ;age 24; occupation Merchant. No place of origin, arrival port, or
name of ship. Does anyone know who this is? Cheers! Jan

Carolyn,
Just what did you find on Hannah? The marriage record says: "WHITNEY, Richard, s. John, b. 18 Apr 1687, m. Hannah DARLING, formerly w.
of John, of Fairfield, 7 Apr 1709." Norwalk Land Records, vol. 4, p. 1.
This is pretty conclusive that she was a widow, and that her maiden name pretty clearly wasn't DARLING. I don't see a John DARLING on that page who is a likely candidate, unless she was the fourth wife of John-2 DARLING [George-1].
Anyone else have any thoughts on this matter?

Robert

Anyone with Phoenix's books who can do a look-up on the exact wording of this record?

W.G. Whitney was born April 11, 1811, and came to Portsmouth
with his father in 1821, where he has since made his home. He was married in 1836 to Melvenia Fleming, who died in 1847, leaving him three children, two sons and a daughter. He was again married in 1850 to Elcy F.M. Voorhees by whom he has four children. He has seven living children, three of whom are married: Ruluff, to Louise Adams and residing in Cincinnati, Ohio; W.F., to Lizzie M. Jones, living in Portsmouth; and Mary Jane, wife of C.E. Jewell, of Portsmouth. His father, Ruluff Whitney, was born in Connecticut, June 20, 1776. At the close of the Revolutionary war, the family emigrated to western New York, where Ruluff grew up and married Susannah Glenny, a native of North Ireland. They came to Ohio in 1817 and located in Portsmouth in 1821, where the mother died in 1845 and the father in 1846. They had a family of eight children: John, who was married to Mrs. Arenia Kelly and died in 1855; Mary, who married Hannibal G. Hamlin, residing and dying in Cincinnati in 1880; Ruluff, who died in 1824, aged nineteen years; Susannah, wife of E.G. Stone, of Cincinnati; Sarah, wife of A.R. Hardin of Cincinnati; W.G., our subject; Minerva, wife of Abijah Curtis; and Olive, who married Allan C. McArthur, youngest son of Ex-Governor McArthur, of Ohio, and now living near Circleville, Ohio.

Robert,
I agree with you that the marriage record does not indicate that Hannah's maiden name was Darling. But keep in mind it COULD be. One of my most puzzling problems resulted from my assumption that maiden names must be different from married names ... It wan't: cousins had married and father and husband had the same name ... in my case both the same surname AND the same given name. (If I hadn't been sitting across from a lady in the NC Archives who happened to be familiar with the family, I'm not sure I would have ever figured it out!)

Dear Mr. Stricko,
I regret that I don't have information on that person. In fact, there were a great many Charles Whitney individuals, and it would be hard to pick him out from his namesakes, especially without a place of residence, or date of birth or death, or names of relatives.
I will send a copy of this reply to our WHITNEY-L mailing list, and see if anyone on the list can identify this individual. Perhaps that will help.

Dear WRG,
The article by Donald Lines Jacobus on the purported English ancestry of John-1 WHITNEY of Watertown, MA, is now posted. I have obtained permission from the publisher to do this. You may see the results at
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/sources/jacobus.html>
I am still trying to get permission to post the article by Paul C. Reed on John-1 and Henry-1 WHITNEY debunking their purported English ancestries. If and when I am successful, I'll let you know. In the meantime, I'll continue to supply an electronic copy to those who request it, under the fair use doctrine.
For those who don't know, John's published ancestry is false beyond his father Thomas WHITNEY of Westminster, and Henry's published ancestry is false in toto. The first is due to an error, the second to a fraud. See

Sheila,
I do not find her birth in Woburn Vital Records. The best match I can make in my records, is Sarah-6 WHITNEY, b. 18 May 1752, Weston, Middlesex, MA, daughter of Abraham-5 and Tabitha (ALLEN) WHITNEY [John-4, Joseph-3, John-2, John-1]. I have found no record of her marriage.

From: [email protected] Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 06:05:11 EDT Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Daniel Whitney of Maine, m. Abigail Stone To: [email protected]
Dear WRG:
I would like to beg some help from one or more members who are involved with the Whitneys of Maine. Somehow I have the Abigail Stone mentioned above married to two different Daniel Whitneys at the same time.
The Whitny13 database last published has Abigail married on 7 Dec 1780 to the Daniel Whitney, b. 26 Sep 1754 to Abel and Mary (Cane) Whitney. W13 shows no place or source for this marriage. This is consistent with Robert Ward's 6-Generation descent, which shows Daniel-5 (Abel-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) married to Abigail on the date cited, but goes no further in listing descent. Pierce is even less help, showing Daniel's birth in 1754 but nothing beyond that.
The version that I have been maintaining for nearly two years, that began its life as Whitny12, but to which I have added literally thousands of names by systematically going through the VR's and following families down several more generations, shows that same Daniel with identical other elements, but provides Gorham, Cumberland Co., ME as a place and the Gorham VR's as a source.
Somehow, however, I have stupidly managed to marry Abigail off to another Daniel Whitney, this one born 18 Nov 1762 in Gorham to David and Rebecca (Edgecomb) Whitney. The children almost match, this one showing ten children from (1) Reuben (1781) to (10) Happy (1802), all born in Gorham, ME, and all in the Gorham VR's. The other family, with the first Daniel above, matches that shown in W13, with an eleventh child, Louisa, b1806, who is NOT in those extracted Whitney VR's.
Thus, it would seem that I "found" a Daniel that was born in Gorham at a time appropriate to participating in this marriage (i.e., 1862) and then "assumed" (and I do know what "assume" means when broken down into its constituent parts!) that I had the right Daniel.
So, I guess what I am ultimately asking for is, would the WRG member who first found this family and sent it in to Jon Aston for inclusion in the collective database please contact me and clear up my confusion?
Thanks,

The LDS Ancestral File gives her two sets of parents (!!), one as guessed above, the other being Jeremiah-5 and Elizabeth (FARR) WHITNEY [Nathan-4, Thomas-3, Thomas-2, John-1]. According to the Stow VR, their daughter Sarah-6 WHITNEY was b. 3 Apr 1752, Stow, MA. Close, but still not a perfect match. I have found no record of her marriage, either.

Hi All
Just finished reading the book "The Next Bend In The River" by C.J. Stevens, about Gold Mining in Maine. I thought you all might enjoy knowing that Marshall Whitney was one of the first five men to pan gold on the Swift River in Maine, and that he and his son Perley made quite a name for themselves here. Perley became one of the best prospectors in the history of Maine's placer mining. There is a whole chapter of the book devoted to him and his family, and if anyone is interested I would be glad to pass it on to them, just let me know. I think, from my research, that his line would be Perley 9 Marshall 8 William 7 William 6 Abner 5 John 4 Isiach 3 Thomas 2 John 1.. The article also has a photo of Perley, and map of area prospected.

Hi
Could someone please tell me why, on the Whitney Database on Rootsweb, our information only goes as far as the 6 generation?? I have been looking at Benjamin (2) and Thomas(2) lines and both stop at 6 generation. I know we need to protect the living members, but I find it had to beleive that someone born in 1820 would still be alive. Am I doing something wrong ?? Should I be looking somewhere else??

Dear Whitney:
Is this the transcription that we all have worked so hard to put together in the past couple of months, or a scanned version that has been done independently. If they have simply stolen all the work of the members of the WRG for their own profit, I, for one, will be extremely incensed.
Can you please supply the URL for this? I would like to go take a look for myself.

Allen -
McLellan's History of Gorham, ME (1903) , at pp. 828-9, states that Abel-4 (Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) lived in York, Gorham, and Standish, ME, and that his wife Mary Cane was daughter of Micah Cane of York. Also at p. 829 he lists the 14 children of this Abel-4, including Daniel-5, b. in York Sep 26, 1754 and m. to Abigail Stone on Dec 7, 1780.
At p. 830 McLellan states that David-5 (Nathan-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2,
John-1), who lived in Gorham, and Rebecca Edgecomb of Falmouth who became
his third wife on Nov 26 1761, had 4 children including Daniel-6, b. Nov 18
1762.
McLellan has no further information concerning the subsequent history of
either Daniel-5 (from Abel-4) or Daniel-6 (from David-5,Nathan-4). (I make
this statement based on review of the pages of McLellan that I have
photocopies of. On my next visit to the Historical Society Library I will
look through McLellan again to be sure I haven't overlooked something.)
The VR of Gorham, as compiled in Publishments, Marriages, Births and Deaths
from the Earlier Records of Gorham, Maine (King, 1897), does not list births
of children of Abel-4 and Mary Cane. It does list the children of David-5
and Rebecca including Daniel-6 b. Nov 18 1762 and lists 10 children (Reuben
to Happy) born of "Whitney, Daniel and Abigail", without further
identification of either David or Abigail. The same VR compilation shows the
marriage of Daniel Whitney and Abigail Stone (without further
identification of either) on Dec 7 1780.
Pretty clearly, a Daniel Whitney of Gorham married an Abigail Stone, and
pretty clearly a Daniel Whitney of Gorham and a lady named Abigail were the
parents of the 10 children (Reuben through Happy) listed in the VR. But
whether this Daniel is Daniel-6 (David-5, Nathan-4) or Daniel-5 (Abel-4)
can't be told from these sources.
Two thoughts:
1 .Doesn't it seem somewhat more likely that Daniel-5 (Abel-4) who
apparently was 26 years
of age on the date of the marriage of Abigail Stone to some Daniel Whitney
would have been the correct Daniel, in contrast to Daniel-6
(David-5,Nathan-4) who was just a month over 18 years of age on that date?
2. If, however, Daniel-6 (David-5,Nathan-4) was the David who married
Abigail Stone and became father of the 10 children, isn't it likely that the
consent of his parents to the marriage would have been required in view of
his age, and if this is so then I wonder if someone would be able to look
for that consent in the actual VR, rather than the compilation?
Incidentally, I fear I may have sent you, earlier today, an email message containing part of my initial thoughts on this subject. I had intended to delete that message, but it looks as if I goofed and sent it; if so, please ignore.

Anyone needing more than below contact Tom.
Tryphena was the daughter of Jonathan and Rebekah (Dunton) Whitney. She is
Tryphena-5 (Jonathan-4, Josiah-3, Jonathan-2, John-1) Her marriage to Abel Witherel on 1 Nov 1770 was recorded in Wrentham VRs. They had 6 children, all born in Wrentham, Mass.
Tom states that Abel Witherell/Wetherell was born on Apr 23, 1747.

I have now returned from my vacation in Cancun, Mexico refreshed and revitalized. I have downloaded, filtered, and started responding to the many emails that awaited me (all 1,086 of them). With all of the Pierce Project sets now submitted, we are 100% adopted and will be 69% complete when I finish editing the 14 sets that await my attention. I hope to complete these over the next few days.
For those of you who are interested, Cancun was fantastic. I enjoyed Turquoise blue waters, sparkling white sand beaches, and all the food and drinks I wanted (my trip was all-inclusive). I visited the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza where I saw the famous Pok-ta-pok ball court, saw the Cenote (sacred well used for human sacrifices), climbed to the top of the 98 foot tall Castillo, and climbed the very hot and humid inner stairway of the Castillo which leads to an alter on an even more ancient temple discovered inside. I also visited the walled city of Tulum which sits on the Carribean coast. All in all a great trip!

Sally,
The data there is just what has been contributed by various amateur genealogists. It has not been systematically gathered, and does not purport to be complete. If you contributed your data, there would be many lines of descent from John-1 WHITNEY which it does not carry to the seventh generation, too!
If you post your queries to the WHITNEY-L mailing list, we'll try to help!

World War I Draft Registration (Update)
In 1917 and 1918, approximately 24 million men, (98% of men present in America), born between 1873 and 1900 completed draft registration cards. This civilian registration is often confused with induction into the military; however, a minority of the civilian men who registered were actually never called up for military service. During these two years, three registration days were held in which the registrants completed a registration card that generally included, among other information, birth date, birth location, father's birth location, and the address of next of kin.
This updated file adds over 200,000 names to the previous database, bringing the total number of names provided to almost 900,000. It adds information from Alabama, Arkansas, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, and Vermont.

This was Artemas-6 WHITNEY, son of John-5 and Sarah (ATHERTON) WHITNEY [Abraham-4, Isaiah-3, Thomas-2, John-1], b. 25 May 1786, Bolton, MA. His marriage is listed in Bolton VRs:
WHITNEY, Artemas and Rebecca Smith of Shirley, m. intentions Dec. 24, 1815.
It is also listed in Shirley VRs:
WHITNEY, Artemas of Bolton and Rebecah Smith, Apr. 4, 1816.
This definitely connects him with Bolton and the above birth record.
See the following web pages: 1. Bolton VRs:
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/mass/bolton.html>
2. Shirley VRs:

3. His ancestry:
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/john39.html#i496>
By the way, this gives you another line, through Abraham-4 WHITNEY's wife Sarah-5 WHITNEY [John-4, Thomas-3, Thomas-2, John-1].

Message #2 I would be pleased to have you pass on my Whitney connection to others. BTW, I have just found the newly opened LDS Ancestral File web site at www.familysearch.org and it is a gold mine. I have taken Ebenezer Burgess back to his father, William Burgess, b.1683 in Charlestown, MA and on the wife side of Ebenezer and William, have gone back to England and Scotland to the mid 1500's. Check it out if you haven't done so. I gather the web site is a work in progress so it is sometimes hard to get in. Persist. Thank you for responding. db

Hello! I have been trying to confirm that Samuel Whitney of my line had a seventeenth child named Henry. The line is as follows: Henry-6, Samuel-5, Benjamin-4, Thomas-3, Thomas-2, John-1 Sources I have seen concerning Samuel's children have listed the number anywhere from two to 16 children. I have a copy of a thesis, however, that lists seventeen children but I haven't been able to confirm #'s 15, 16, and 17's births in the vital records. I found info on Henry on the LDS site which helps me confirm that there were 17 but again the info listed is incomplete because Henry is listed as the second of only two children! At any rate, Henry is listed and had 11 children. You might note that three of Samuel's sons (Samuel Austin, Ebenezer, and Henry) have close connections with the Perkins' of New Orleans. Samuel and Henry married sisters Ruth and Lucy, daughters of John PERKINS and Phoebe, and Ebenezer's son Thomas married Josephine Allen Whitney, Samuel's granddaughter.) Aaron and Margaret had five other children, the first born in Roxbury, the second and third born in Uxbridge, and the fourth and fifth born in Upton, the last one listed in 1772. In Robert Ward's index to the MA VR's, there is no Aaron born in 1774. That is not to say that such a person did not exist - merely that the record is not among the ones available on our WRG site. The same index shows a number of Aarons born between 1769 and 1780; one in Templeton, one in Townsend, one in Sherborn, one in Harvard, one in Northborough, and one in Watertown, None of these, however, has an Aaron for a father.
Perhaps, since Aaron and Margaret moved around a fair bit (children born in at least 3 different towns), they might be found in NH or VT???
Have you checked the search function on Tim Doyle's Pierce transcription site?
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Dear WRG,
Through the generosity of Margaret Cass, I am now in possession of a dozen copies of a WHITNEY family newsletter entitled "Whitney Whistler." It was published by a certain Shields Publishing Co., P.O. Box 43, Palos Verde Estates, CA 90274. The issues I have are dated 1984 through 1987. It contains a good deal of data on various WHITNEY families in the U.S., and queries. Some of the names associated with the queries are familiar ones from the WRG.
Does anyone in the WRG know anything about other issues of this publication, or the identity of the editor/publisher? I tried the white pages and yellow pages online to locate this company, or anyone named SHIELDS in Palos Verde Estates, but came up empty. Shall I spend a 33-cent stamp sending a letter to this 12-year-old address? I would like to get permission to post copies of these newsletters online.
Regards,
Robert

Dear Robert: A few years ago, I received the address for the "Whitney Family Association" from the friendly folks at the Berkshire Family History Association in Pittsfield, Mass.
I wrote a letter of inquiry dated May 18, 1994 (I have my copy) to Mary Ann Shields, Publisher, Shields Publishing Co., P.O. Box 43, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274. -- IT WAS RETURNED as "Attempted -- Not Known".
I am thrilled you got your hands on the issues. They may tell us more about this "association" (reunions, etc.??) in addition to queries and related lines. I wonder -- was Mary Ann Shields related to the Whitney family?

Pam:
Clarissa Betsey Whitney is a descendant of Henry Whitney of Long Island and Connecticut. Her line goes:
Henry -1 Whitney and Elizabeth Smith John -2 Whitney and Elizabeth Olmstead Richard -3 Whitney and Esther Clark Henry-4 Whitney and Ruth Schribner Clarissa Betsey Whitney-5 and David Hunt
According to our current information (which I believe was taken from the book by S. Whitney Phoenix), Clarissa Betsey Whitney was born 10 May 1789 in Ridgefield, Connecticut. She married on 16 Mar 1806 in Ridgefield, Conn. David Hunt (b. 16 Nov 1782 in N. Salem, NY and d. 7 Oct 1862, Ridgefield, Conn.).
No children are listed in our database for David and Clarissa (Whitney) Hunt, but would be pleased to add them to our "Henry" database. You can send your Gedcom to Carolyn Tilton [email protected] who maintains the database.

Since Esther is listed as having been born in Stockbridge, I checked our online archives and discovered that we do not have the Stockbridge vital records as they have not been published. I then looked at our census indices and found the following WHITNEY families located in Stockbridge:
1810:
WHITNEY, Elisha BERKSHIRE CO., MA STOCKBRIDGE 195 WHITNEY, Mamre BERKSHIRE CO., MA STOCKBRIDGE 195
1820:
WHITNEY, George Berkshire Co. Stockbridge 132 WHITNEY, Mamre Berkshire Co. Stockbridge 132
1830:
WHITNEY, William Berkshire Co. Stockbridge 378
"Mamre WHITNEY" is obviously from this family, and I suspect George and
William
are her two sons:
980. SILAS WHITNEY (Timothy, Jonas, Moses, Richard, John), b. Petersham,
Apr. 29, 1762; m. at Stockbridge, Mass., Oct. 4, 1789, Mamre BRADLEY, b. 1765, d. Apr. 20, 1835.

He d. in California in 1891, s.p. The widow res. at 1014 Pine St.,

This family appears to have been fairly well researched and there are no
girls named Esther. I then searched for the Elisha WHITNEY listed on the
1810 census and found the following:
Elisha Whitney
Born: 8 Jan 1746/47 in Spencer, Massachusetts Died: 4 Jul 1832 in Wysox, Bradford, Pennsylvania Fact 1: in Wysox, Pennsylvania
Father: Joshua Whitney, b. 25 Mar 1714 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Mother: Mehitable Wilson
Family 1 Esther Clark, b. 1763 in Spencer, Massachusetts
Married: 20 Feb 1783 in Worcester, Spencer, Mass.
1.Rebecca Whitney, b. 1783 in Spencer, Massachusetts 2.Asa Clark Whitney, b. 5 May 1785 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts 3.Elizabeth Whitney, b. 10 Dec 1786 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts 4.Sally Whitney, b. 12 Oct 1788 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts 5.Elliot Whitney, b. 18 May 1791 in Stockbridge, Berkshire, Massachusetts 6.Alvin Whitney, b. 31 Dec 1793 in Stockbridge, Mass. 7.Ebenezer Whitney, b. 15 Dec 1795 in Stockbridge, Mass. 8.Elisha (2) Whitney, b. 25 Jul 1797 in Stockbridge, Mass. 9.Esther Whitney, b. 23 Dec 1799 in Stockbridge, Mass. 10.Alanson Whitney, b. 1 Jul 1801 in Stockbridge, Mass.
I think it is safe to conclude that Esther was the daughter of Elisha and
Esther (CLARK) WHITNEY. Elisha was the son of Joshua (Nathaniel, Nathaniel,
John, John).
Our database has a link for this Esther. It seems that a woman by the name of Karen Bree has more information on Esther Whitney in an off-line Database. She can be written to at [email protected].

Dear WRG:
I picked this up on another list tonight. It looks authentic.
Allan E. Green
for those of you wishing to purchase these CDs, this is the latest information (hard to believe the price! $33 for 25 CDs!!), Sheila:
Mr. Paul Nauta, Manager of the Family History Department's Planning & Communications group, has asked me to provide the following correct information in order to set the record straight.
1) When the 1881 Census becomes available, the Family History Department will provide notice of its availability at http://www.lds.org . Furthermore, the CD-ROM sets will be sold online via the new FamilySearch web site at http://www.familysearch.org .
2) There is no word on when the official release date will be as yet.
3) Back orders are now being accepted by the various Distributions Centers for item number 50169. The price is confirmed at US$33.00.
Now, specifically addressing the mis-information in the original posting:
4) The cost in pounds sterling quoted below as £29.75 is not necessarily correct. The cost in US dollars will be US$33.00. The exchange rate between dollars and pounds will indicate the approximate price in pounds.
5) The CD-ROM sets for the individual regions of the census will not be priced at £15 each. Their price will vary depending on the number of data discs for each region. For example, a small region containing only a single data disc plus the viewer disc will be priced at about US$4.25 Final costs for each region have not yet been set.
6) The Family History Department is not discouraging the sale of the separate regional disc sets.
7) There is no surcharge for either the individual regional disc sets nor for shipping and handling.
8) There are a total of 25 CD-ROMs in the complete set - 24 data discs plus a viewer disc.
The above information is what the Family History Department would like everyone in the Internet genealogy community to know. Please feel free to forward this e-mail message to any relevant genealogy mailing list..

Dear Mr. Martin:
I find that there was an Esther-7 Whitney born 23 Dec 1799 in Stockbridge, MA, d.o. Elisha-6 (Joshua-5, Nathaniel-4, Nathaniel-3, John-2, John-1) and Esther (Clark) Whitney, originally from Spencer, Worcester, MA.
You may find these people in our collective database. Our largest collection of resources are to be found at the following URL
http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/
which has links to a number of other sites where resources collected by various members of the Whitney Research Group are to be found. These include Vital Records, Census Extracts, lists of materials and resources, etc., and our three collective databases of the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown, MA, (to which group your Esther belongs), Henry Whitney of CT, and the Whitneys of Bermuda and Virginia.
I hope that this response will not only be helpful, but encourage you to make use of these resources and, in time, contribute to our growing knowledge of the descent from these various Whitney lines.

Tim Doyle and Brad Martin.
About 25 years ago I began the hunt for my g-grandfather's parents, without success. In doing so I created a data base of the Whitney names I found in various places. The data base now exceeds 7,000 entries and I do have 81 entries that I have sorted on Bradford Co. My reason for searching there was due to the similarity of some of the given names to those in my family, such as Alvin,Willard, John, etc. I am able to send a printout of those 81 entries if you wish to view them.
There was a message concerning the Whitney Whistler a couple of days ago on this research site and I happen to have all of those issues, which were published by Mary Anne Shields, and she was descended from the Esther Clark Whitney mentioned. Mary Anne wrote me in 1987 saying that she would no longer publish the "Whistler", giving no reason. I had the feeling from her letters that it might be due to copyright problems and ill health.
I also have made a copy of all the families in Ohio in 1850 with the Whitney surname, that is, I have them on census work sheets by families and include all those shown in the residence. This is of course, hand written, and would require computerization if there was a use for it on the WRG.
Please let me know if any of this is of interest to you.

Your database would be a welcome addition to WITNEY14, our collective database. If you are willing to send part or all of it to the WRG, we would be delighted to receive it. Send contributed data in a GEDCOM file to Jon Aston <[email protected]>. Removing living persons before contributing is a good idea.

Thanks, WRG, for all the time and effort you've put into this surname list. I've been trying to match up my Vermont Whitneys, spread far and wide, and tonight, just by pushing a few buttons, have turned unconnected grave markers into family connections! The vital records from Robert Ward's page started me off; then Jean Muse's Whitney line connected, and finally, the Pierce Transcription finished the entire line; all of this took less than 10 minutes...
Who could ask for more??? Not me!!

I think I sent the wrong url for my Identification of Whitneys in the 1850 Michigan Census. This is the right one.
<A HREF="http://members.aol.com/idiotmron/Whit1850Cen/1850id.htm">Whitneys
of Michigan, 1850 </A> I have got through about half the counties, listing the census data and any other info I have on marriages and deaths from other sources, and created active links between all relatives that are also on that census, which is very useful in researching families.
If a positive id can be made, that is included along with the sources. I hope it is useful to some, even though it is not finished, and that perhaps someone may want to do this with another state or year. The page is large, and may take a minute to load - all the info is on one page, so the links are easier to make.

A very good source which would do that is Willis's death certificate, which would list his parents (at least in theory). If you haven't yet obtained it, that should be your next step.

Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Trip to NY To: [email protected]
Hello again WRG, I just booked my tickets for a trip with my father-in-law (Robert Whitney, age 79) to Ontario County, NY mid June. He was born and raised there. His Whitney line settled there in the late 1790s. Although I don't need much research for that line, it will be nice to get to see the area that I have studied so much about. I will be doing research on a few of the "women's" lines while there.
I plan to spend at least one day at the Ontario County Archives Center in Canandaigua. I will also visit several of the cemeteries in the area to get some photographs.
I know that several members of this list have lines in that area and others who are currently living there. Does anyone have anything they would like me to look up or try to verify while I am there? Also for those who have been there, do you have any suggestions as to where I should visit other that the archives? Is there are particular library I should check out, etc.?
Any reasonable requests and all advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Shawn Whitney Seattle, WA

It has been quite some time since we, Bob Schadewald or I, have posted our Whitney line, and I am hoping that someone might have some information to help us tie up some of the loose ends. I will not post the vital stats for the first few generations that are covered in Pierce and elsewhere in the Whitney pages and that are fairly well proven. Nor will I post vitals on the last few generations. I do have verification/sources for some of the information but some have been lost. Thanks, Jo Hogle

For the parentage of Elizabeth HARRIS, see
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/john12.html>
We have no death date for her.
>4) Daniel Whitney (Death date?) & > Susannah Curtis ( Birth and death dates? Parentage?)
We have none of the dates you seek on the fourth generation, nor the parentage of Susannah CURTIS, but there was a sizable CURTIS family in Roxbury from the 1630's, to which she surely must have belonged.
>5) Elijah Whitney ( Death date?) & > Hannah [Coffin??] ( Birth and death dates? Certainty of last name? >Parentage?)
It seems pretty clear that the Elijah WHITNEY and Hannah who had children in Brookline and Roxbury beginning in 1741/2 are identical to the Elijah WHITNEY and Hannah COFFIN who were m. 1 Nov 1739, Boston, MA, because of the proximity of Boston to Brookline and Roxbury, because of the affinity of other members of Elijah's family with Boston (a brother and four sisters were all married there), and because there really isn't any other Elijah to whom this record could apply.
>(now the information in Pierce is non-existent except for John's birth and >wife's name unless it is in pages as yet not transcribed, but I don't believe >so)
False. See below.
>6) John Whitney b. Nov, 29, 1749, Roxbury, MA ; d. Nov 3, 1834, Warwick, MA > m. April 22, 1773 in Roxbury, MA > Mary Payson b. Oct 16, 1744 (location?) ; d. Aug 11, 1816 in Warwick, >MA. > (Parentage??)
The preceding John WHITNEY appears on p. 129 of Pierce, as #696, with correct birth date, correct marriage date and spouse. Pierce says she d. in 1816 (correct) and he in 1830 (probably incorrect), and resided in Roxbury and Warwick, MA. Pierce then lists six children: John, bap. Aug 1774, Roxbury, d. young; Mary, b. Sept. 26, 1776; Sally, b. Feb. 1, 1779; m. 1802 at Warwick, Samuel MAYO; Nancy, b. Mar. 21, 1781; John, b. Apr. 8, 1783, m. -----; and Lois, b. Aug. 20, 1785, d. unm. Nov. 6, 1820.
I don't know Mary PAYSON's parentage or place of birth. >7) John Whitney, Jr b. April 8, 1783; d. July 3, 1839 (locations?) > m. Dec 2, 1819 (location?) > Abigail Foster b. dec 2, 1819; (Death date? Parents poss Abraham > > > Foster and Sarah Willard?) (locations?)
The John WHITNEY above appears on p. 244 of Pierce, as #1761, as b. Apr. 8, 1783, Warwick, Mass., m. -----, and d. 27 Sep 1831; res. Warwick, Mass. He is given three children, no names known, who d. Nov. 5, 1828, Aug. 13, 1831, and Aug. 19, 1831, presumably in Warwick.
The death date is wrong. The location of his death was Warwick, MA.
Much amplifying detail on the dates and children can be found in the Warwick Vital Records, which may be seen at
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/mass/warwick.html>.
>8) Henry Payson Whitney b. Sept 5, 1820 (location?); d. Oct 10, 1896, Osseo, >MN > m. (date of marriage and location?) > Margaret Hall Bohanon May 21, 1824 (location?); d. Oct 25, 1915, Osseo, >MN
Henry Payson WHITNEY was b. in Warwick, MA. After that, my records show nothing further of him.

Bob Schadewald (my cousin and also member of WRG) has, the above noted, John Whitney Jr's bible where he recorded his ancestry back to John & Elinor Whitney. He also recorded the births, marriages and deaths of his wife and his children.
It is noted that John Jr married Abigail Foster and SHE is the person who died on 27 Sept 1831, 3 weeks after giving birth to William who died the day he was born, 8 Sept 1831. Two children died in August of 1831 - Sarah on the 13th and Abraham on the 18th. Then the newborn and the mother followed with the month. Child James had died in 1828.
Only 2 children survived to adulthood, Henry Payson Whitney and Joseph Mason Whitney. HP Whitney and Margaret Bohannon were my GGGGrandparents.
Joseph Mason and his wife Julia Brockway apparently had no children, at least none recorded in the bible of Joseph where he recorded their marriage and Julia's death, this bible being in the possession of my mother. Does anyone have any information to the contrary?
It should be also be noted that the last entry in John Whitney's bible is recorded by someone other than John Whitney Jr, as it records his death on July 3, 1839.
I realize that family records such as these bibles may not be considered 100% accurate, but they certainly are helpful.
Jo Hogle (who will be glad when the Pierce transcription is done - still working on my assigned pages)

Hi, Don-- How exciting to find someone interested (perhaps) in "my Aaron"!!
Here are the bare bones of what I have on my ancestor, Aaron:
Aaron Whitney, b. Sept 10, 1774 in Lisbon, ME, d. about 1855, Guilford, ME.
m. Mary Crockett (widow? of _____ Doble) on Sept 8 1822 in Guilford, ME,
b. Jun 6, 1782, Sumner, ME, d. Jan 7, 1826, Guilford, ME
Mary Crockett Doble was Aaron's second wife. They had one son, Stillman F. Whitney, b. Jun 11, 1823. (Perhaps his middle name was Franklin? I don't know.)
I have much more on these people and also on Aaron's first family of nine children. What do you need? I will have to do a little digging to find my resources for the above information.
What I am lacking -- and I hope you can help me with this -- is the parentage of Aaron. You mention an Aaron Whitney and Margaret Cornit. Tell me more!! This has been my "brick wall" for years. I've never been able to make the connection to John and Elinore.
I'll look forward to hearing from you. I hope we can help each other.

Dear Liz Whitcomb Cwiklik, ELmhurst, Illinois<
I am intrigued by your e mail 23 about Henry Whitney.
I have been seeking information about a Henry Whitney for a
long time that was involved in a lawsuit in Iroquois County, Illinois, in 1846. He and Henry L. Marsh sued a man by the name of John B. Stricker. In fact, I have copies of some of the papers involved in this lawsuit that were furnished me by Verna Drake of the Iroquois County Genelogical Society. She was unable to furnish me any information concerning this particular Henry Whitney's family.
My interest in this Henry Whitney was drawn because I found a
census entry on Page 177, Line 503, 1850 Census for Census District No. 21, Iroquois County, Illinois, County Seat Watseka, Illinois dated November 19, 1850, reading as follows:
Polly Whitney 46 F Born
New York
Sara Reese 20 F " New York *James Whitney 17 M " " Josiah Whitney 15 M
" "
Lucy Whitney 13 F "
"
Seneca Whitney 12 M " " William Whitney 10 M "
"
Lucinda Whitney 8 F "
"
*I am reasonably sure that this James Whitney was my great
Grandfather, Daniel James Whitney, as I have record that James Whitney married my G Grandmother Dilly Jane Flint in Kankakee, Illinois, the next adjoining county to Iroquois County, on July 26, 1855.
I have never been able to find record of the Husband of this
Polly Whitney, and Mrs. Drake, as well as I, thought he might have been the Henry Whitney mentioned in this Law suit. I never found this Henry in a census of Illinois.
I have much detail on hand, but before going into it
further, thought I would write you to see if your Henry could have been the one mentioned in the above lawsuit, and whether you had any information about his wife and family, and if it could have been the above? I will be glad to furnish all the detail I have, if this happens to be a connection to your Henry. Thank you very much for replying to this. Ray Whitney, Topeka, Kansas.

Hi folks
Rather than bugging just Tim Doyle with this, while he is busy with the Pierce book organization, I thought maybe someone else out there with access to the book can answer this question.

Can someone tell me the name of the woman he married? It appears on my photocopy as possibly Vashti or Vashu Knight. I can not determine what the unusual first name is. I am transcribing the page and want to get it correct.
Thanks in advance for your help.

This is to Tim Whitney concerning his Granfather Alonzo E. Whitney. My grandmother was a sister to Alonzo. My grandmother was Evelyn E. Whitney - a twin to Emma Whitney. Alonzo had nine children. Alonzo worked at the Round House in Susquehanna.
I do not know about Leonard Except that he married a Marian Foley on December 28th , 1927.
I have been trying to trace all of my grandmother's siblings and do have information on a good many of offspring.
Joe Whitney was a relative of Floyd Whitney, who is a brother to Leonard. Perhaps he will get in touch with Tim Whitney.

Missouri Confederate Volunteers
Despite remaining a part of the Union during the American Civil War, many residents of Missouri were sympathetic to the Confederate cause. An estimated two thousand men from the state volunteered to fight for the Confederate States of America. Taken from the "History of the First and Second Missouri Confederate Brigades, 1861-1865" published in 1879, this database lists over 1600 men who volunteered to fight in the 1st and 2nd Missouri Confederate Brigades. Researchers will find the name and rank of the volunteer along with information regarding residence and occupation. For those seeking male Missouri ancestors from the mid-1800s, this can be a useful source of information.

Thanks for the help, but same names, different branches. Our branch: Alonzo married Della Simpson, had: Floyd, Mabel, Florence (Flossie Bell), William, Bessie, Bertie (he was the one who went West and disappeared), Leonard and Walter (probably not in that order, but Rev. Walter Whitney was the last, born 1905.)

Tim Whitney, Joe Whitney and myself seem to be connected.
Alonzo had three sisters and one brother as follows:
Amorette Whitney, born May 2, 1844--Died October 1, 1873
Leander B. Whitney, born Oct. 21, 1846--Died Feb--1934
Evelyn E. Whitney , Born August 15, 1856 Died Sept 12, 1932
Emma C, Whitney, born Augut 15, 1856 no date of death
Emma and my grandmother , Evelyn were twins.
I have a long list of all their descendands but am missing many facts--such
as the date of Emma's death. Emma was blind from birth but married twice and gave birth to six children.
I have the same list of Alonzo's family but would like any information on
Walter Whitney as he lived near us in Steuben County, New York at one time.
Joe Whitney 's Grandparents were Floyd and Ethel Whitney but I have no further Information on any of Leonard Whitneys siblings. Would appreciate any that can be obtained.
It's a small world and the internet is so helpful in solving past mysteries and finding our anscestors.

AHA! The brother Riley WHITNEY was the key! Your Elias-7 was b. 1 Sep 1822, and his brother Riley-7 on 20 May 1833, probably in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY. They were sons of Jeremiah-6 and Susan (RESSEGUIE) WHITNEY [Jeremiah-5, Jeremiah-4, Nathan-3, John-2, Henry-1]. See the following URL:

Rich: i have no idea, but please forgive me as I didn't mean to cause any trouble. For some reason this note is causing trouble on some ISPs. I promise it was not done intentionally and the majority of people on the lists only got it once. There were only 20 names on it and since I copied and pasted there was no forwarding involved. Again, sorry. Marsha Whitney Clark Researching...WHITNEY, BRAY, YORKO, HRINDA, TARTER

Hi, I'm hoping that someone out there will be able to answer this question. I'm researching Laura Whitney (b. abt: 1792 d. unknown). She was the daughter of Mary Blair and Peter Whitney (dates unknown--but believed to be from MA). She married a man called Peter Atwood (b. abt: 1791 d. abt. 1855) in Chester, MA on October 24, 1814. She was apparently pregnant at the time of their marriage (noticed the date of their marriage and the year their daughter was born). Their daughter was Sophia Atwood (b. abt. 1814 d. 3-22-1871). Sophia was my ggg-grandmother. On the back of a photo of Sophia, it was written that she was "part-Indian". We have traced her mother's Whitney lineage back to England. We have noticed, that it appears the Whitney family didn't keep up with her after she married Peter Atwood.....maybe because Laura was pregnant when she married him (?).....or maybe he was Native American (?). We have had trouble finding much birth/death info on Peter. On a census record, it has him as being born in New York State...and I think, dying there as well. He lived in both MA and NY at different times. The LDS Church has a Peter Atwood...but their information and names do not accurately match our family records, so it is believed to be an incorrect match. It is possible, if Peter was Native American, that "Peter Atwood" wasn't his real name, but just a name he "borrowed". He had a second marriage to Mehitable Phebe Clark 12-21-1825 in Chester, MA...and raised a whole new family. Sophia, however was not mentioned amongst them on census records. On Sophia's death certificate, however, M. Phebe Clark was listed as her "mother".....so evidently it was Peter's second wife who raised Laura's daughter. My question is: What ever happened to Laura Whitney? Was she a birth child of the Whitney's or perhaps an adopted Native American child? (which happened frequently--but wasn't discussed). I'm trying to find out where Sophia Atwood's Native American heritage came from. I've even wondered if perhaps Laura Whitney and Peter Atwood adopted her---maybe she was a Native American child. Sophia Atwood went on to marry Joel Daniels (b. abt.1803 d. 10-03-1895) in Becket, MA (not sure of year). If anyone out there has any information on our Laura Whitney, I'd love to hear from you. She deserves to be remembered.....and maybe in the process our Native American mystery will be solved as well. You can write to me at: [email protected] Thank you..... Bev Tiner

Dear Gail:
I checked the John and Elinor database without much luck, but in the CT Whitney database I did find a Jeremiah Whitney, b. 18 Mar 1782 in Warwick, NY, married to a Rachel King, although no children are shown. The interesting thing about this one is that he is shown as having died in Rochester, NY!
I would also look at the other Jeremiah Whitneys in the CT Whitney database. Two of them were born in the 1780's and had sons named William. If you need directions on how to find these sources, let me know.
Good Luck
