If you visit the following webpage, you will find lots of places with the name "Whitney" included.
<http://www.whitneygen.org/misc/places.html>
I have linked most of them to Expedia maps, so they can be located. If anyone visits any of them and has information on how they were named, or any other interesting data, I will be happy to coordinate these visits and receive the data.
We already have several. See the webpage for details.
Shawn Whitney will do Whitney, WA, and Whitney, OR.
Karen Grubaugh will take Whitney, FL, and Whitney Beach, FL.
Marion Leska has offered to cover Whitney places in NV.
I'll try to locate Whitney's Landing, MD.
Anyone else?

Robert

Robert and WRG:
I'll make myself responsible for Whitneyville in Cascade Township of Kent County, MI. I've been there, eaten dinner at the Whitneyville Inn, and it was my direct ancestors that founded the place and built the Inn as a coaching stop on the road between Lansing and Grand Rapids. If the sorting, either before or after the move, brings to light a photo or two that I know I have somewhere, I'll send a copy of that along, too.

After Mrs Floyd Whitney had left, and near nine o'clock in the evening, the persons we haved named as present were all gathered in the front room of the house, except Mr. Victor Whitney. Who was in the kitchen. Mr. W. S. Stafford was sitting in a chair tipped back against the front door, which was swung open against the wall south of the opening. Within three or four feet of him and on the north side of the open door sat Mr. Ralph Button with a child on his lap.
Mrs Elias Whitney stood by the bureau at the front of the room,
probably eight feet from the open door, and was looking toward the door. The rest of the persons named were scattered about the room.
Suddenly, while the inmates of the house were thus situated, without
the slightest warning or notice, Mr Floyd Whitney appeared in the open door, placed his left hand against the south casing, reached his right hand into the room and struck Mr. W.S. Stafford a severe blow to the right side of his head with a heavy club, that is described as a cherry root a little more than two feet long and with a heavy knot on the end. Mr. Stafford immediately fell to the floor in front of the open door. Mrs. Whitney thinks but one blow was struck but Mr. Elias Whitney informs us that Mr. Button says Floyd struck Stafford twice; but he (Whitney) thinks this is a mistake. As Stafford fell Floyd said " will you strike a wife of mine!" or something to that effect, according to Mrs. Whitney's recollection.

Dear WRG:
I've just seen a citation for the following work:
1. Bragdon, Lester MacKinzie, and Frost, John Elbridge, York, ME, Vital Records (Picton Press, Camden, ME), p. 119.
I just checked with the Whitney Bibliography on the website and found that no one is listed as owning this work. Does anyone have easy access to it and has it been considered for transcription and extraction of the Whitney entries? I find myself frequently entering data for people who are supposed to have come from, been born in, were married in, or died in York, and am frustrated by not being able to check the York VR's to provide a good source for that "fact."
Could we get these records to transcribe? I'll help as soon as I get moved and set up again in our new home.
Thanx.

I recently got a catalog from Picton Press. I have extracted from it, their website, and that of Higginson Book Co., a list of vital records and probate records of Maine which we need to extract. I have posted it to the website at <http://www.whitneygen.org/archives/extracts/todo.html>. I'll be happy to add any sources which list members could suggest for future abstracting.

It was found that Stafford's skull was crushed in on the right side, from the temple back.He lived until nearly two o'clock the next morning; but Mrs Whitney does not think he was in his right mind any of the time although he spoke a few times.
Floyd Whitney stayed on the premises until a short time, before
Stafford died. He carried a lantern and helped catch a horse for Alva Stafford to ride to call a physician, and offered to go for Stafford's mother if it was desired. Mrs. Whitney said he felt awfully bad over what he had done; and she doesn't think he intedned to kill Stafford, but hit him harder than he meant to. He and Stafford, she believes, were always good friends and on the best of terms. After the striking Floyd cried like a baby.
Elias Whitney talked with Floyd after the latter had struck
Stafford. Floyd said he was too fast and was sorry for what he had done. he said his wife came over home and told him some stuff that made mad. She told him that Stafford had struck her in the stomach and kicked her. He said if she had gone over there and lied like that to him, he wouldn't live with another day. Elias told him how it was, and said if he had come and called some of the family out probably he wouldn't have done what he did. Elias Whitney says he hasn't seen Floyd since he left the premises just before Stafford died.
Up to this writing Floyd Whitney has not been arrested. As stated by
us last week a warrant was issued by Justice of the peace White, of Knoxville, on Monday; but up to this time Whitney has managed to elude his pursuers. Constable L.O. Beach come near catching him taht day, giving him a long chase through a marsh. but the fellow finally got into the woods and escaped. He has a large number of relatives and connextions to Chatham and as our correspondent says, it is generally believed they are secreting him and keeping him supplied with food and information. It supposed his friends are trying to get him out of state and into Canada. It is reported in Chatham that he is now well armed, and there seems to be a general feeling that he would not be a desirable customer to meet in the woods. He is generally spoken of as a rather hard case, and even his father does not give him a very good character.
The county comissioners last week offered a reward of $100 for his
arrest and delivery to the Sheriff.Chatham men 3who claim to know him well describe him as follows: he is about 5 feet, 5 or 6 inches high, weighs about 140 pounds; sstoops a little whitne standing, has regular features, large blue eyes, pale complesion, light brown or sandy hair, long full sandy whiskers; wore a yellowish snuff-colored coat and a blue cloth cap; wears has(sp) cap on one side of his head and holds his head on one side. He does not look a man in the face when talking to him.

There's also a Whitney or Whitney Heights, South Carolina, just north

Possibly you have already answered this question. Cyrus P. WHITNEY is undoubtedly the one listed as #4580 in Frederick Clifton Pierce, _Descendants of John Whintey_, p. 499.
He was b. 12 Feb 1843, Dickenson, NY, son of Peter-7 and Laura (FARR) WHITNEY [Israel-6, Jonas-5, Jonas-4, Moses-3, Richard-2, John-1]. Her m. 3 Sep 1865, Cynthia L. DAVENPORT, b. 9 May 1838. In 1895 they resided in Malone, NY. Their children are given as:
i. Eva Maria, b. 15 Nov 1866. ii. Charles Leonard, b. 5 May 1868. iii. Carl Cushing, b. 24 Feb 1873; d. 10 May 1876. iv. Floy Fisk, b. 20 Jul 1877.
On p. 625, Charles Leonard-9 WHITNEY is treated. He m. 14 Feb 1893, Mattie E. IRISH. They had a son Gifford Irish WHITNEY, b. 24 Mar 1894.
That's all that is given about the descendants of Cyrus P. WHITNEY.
I hope this helps.

Hello, can anyone help me find Silas Whitney supposed to have been born about 1832 possibly Louisiana or Arkansas.
Married Mary Ann Elizabeth Johnson about 1864. Known children Mollie (Sis) Julie, Alfred Tom, Caldonia (my Grandmother) James Eliphilet and Francie.
Have looked for this family for over 10 years have not found them on any census, death or marriage records, only have what was told to an Aunt who has passed away.
If anyone has any clue at all I would be very happy to pick it up and try digging some more. Silas was supposed to have died in Hunt Co. Texas, have checked every death record could find and nothing about him listed.
Thanks ahead of time for any help. Jody ([email protected])

One of their children was Erastus, born July 28,1797 and married Mary Jackson. One of their children was Miles. Next generation of our family was Miles Whitney born March 25, 1838 and married Sarah Jane Blunt. One of their children was my grandfather, Charles born 1868 also in Otis. My father Lloyd Ward Whitney was born May 11, 1899 in Sandisfield, Ma. and the last male Whitney in this line. I have not been able to trace before Jonas. I would welcome any input. Dear Shirley,
Your Jonas WHITNEY was Jonas-6 WHITNEY, b. 21 Oct 1771, Harvard, MA, son of Timothy-5 and Alice (WHITNEY) WHITNEY. For him, see these page:

Dear Whitney Rooters,
Thank you all for helping me learn about many ways to search my family tree. I have been, as they say, lurking at my computer many, many months just having a good time with the chase. Mr. Ward, you are a treasure.Thank you for all the guidance given to others that I have been reading.I don't see how you do it! I'll try to keep this short. Try. It looks like I have succeeded in tracing my line of Whitney's to John and Elinor.
Frank Douglas Whitney, my grandfather, born 24,june 1868 was from Herkimer NY. His father, Perry Percy Whitney, born 1836 in the town of Vernon,Oneida Co. NY.
He was a Civil War vet. in the 117th NY VOL. (Oneida 4th)
Perry's father was Joseph Whitney, born 1777 (probably at Dudley, Worcester Co. MA.)
Later, moved with his father to Herkimer,NY the German Flatts area.
And then
Joseph settled in the town of Vernon,Oneida Co.NY.
Joseph's father was Phinehas (Phineas) Whitney, born 24, June 1740 in Spencer, MA. And then it is Joshua, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, John, John. (Thank you Mr. Pierce)
I have lots of names, dates, births, deaths, places if anyone thinks they are part of this.
And I'm really not done. There's much more to find about these families.
Thanks again to you all,

Rhonda,
You have given not quite enough information to be able to identify your line.
Probably a good thing to do next is to locate the death certificate of Cleveland WHITNEY. That would give you his date and place of birth, his date and place of death, his parents' names, including the maiden name of his mother, and his parents birthplaces.
Another useful exercise is to find Cleveland and Lillian in the 1920 census of the place where they were living at that time. That will also give you much useful information.
When you have a little more data, write back, and we'll see if we can help you further.
Good luck and good hunting!

Dear Jan Whitaker and others interested in the Whitneys of Lisbon, ME.
Re the Jacob mentioned above, son of Samuel Lumber Whitney and Lydia Curtis, the Lisbon VR's show a marriage to a Mary Goold on July 18, 1830 and two children of this marriage; daughters Increase Goold and Mary Jane, b. 1831 and 1834 respectively. It then shows the death of Mary, w. Jacob in 1838 (no month or day), and then a marriage intent for a Jacob Whitney and Christiana Jordan on 6 Sep 1838. Then the Lisbon VR's show three further children for a Jacob Whitney in the succeeding time frame. However, the entries for these three children, Martha McClellan, b. 1839; Washington Dain, b. 1842; and Christiana Ann, b. 1848, to be the children of Jacob and MARY Whitney.
My tendency is to believe that these three children actually had Christiana Jordan as their mother, and the clerk or copyist who prepared the Lisbon VR's missed copying the name of the second wife accurately. However, I must admit the possibility of two different Jacobs. Can you or anyone else among the descendants of the ME Whitneys help shed some light on this question?

The site is hosted on a personal computer owned by Tim Doyle, of the WRG, and he just moved about a month ago. He may have had to change ISP and he may be having a problem with his new setup. Give it a day or two for him to become aware of the problem and fix it.

I finally found the problem. It seems that Network Solutions didn't have a record of my initial payment for the domain, and had it locked down tight until I payed. Since all of my receipts are packed, I just paid the bill again and will work it out with them when I get settled in. I do not know how long it will be before they unlock the DNS entry for the site, but it has now (again) been paid for.
My apologies to everyone for this mixup.

Dear WRG,
With some pride, I announce the publication of an article by myself in the July number of _The American Genealogist_, vol. 74 (1999), pp. 197-208, entitled, "The Footloose Joshua-3 Whitney (1687-1771) and Some of His Descendants." This was Joshua-3 [Benjamin-2, John-1]. The article identifies his children, grandchildren, and some of his great-grandchildren. This family is rather badly jumbled in Frederick Clifton Pierce's _The Descendants of John Whitney_ (1895), and the purpose of this article is to straighten them out with full documentation.
This is my direct ancestral line (see <http://www.whitneygen.org/families/lineages.html#1a>), and I'd be happy to answer questions from interested parties. The research was undertaken to discover and prove the ancestry of Sarah (WHITNEY) FLAGG, and in the process the ancestry of Mercy (WHITNEY) BALL, her half-sister, was found.

Hello all! Like many of you, I have been using the GenServ system for many years and contributed my Gedcom files to it. I received the following in their "What's New" letter this week. Since it's free for anyone, I thought I'd pass it along!
- -) Jeanne Muse
About four years ago, we noticed a change in the GenServ GuestBook messages. People were using the GuestBook as a query board. That was a good idea because the messages were left on the GuestBook for a long period of time.
For almost four years the GenServ GuestBook messages have been archived waiting for the time when we could provide this service.
We have a new server with a new search program written by Anthony Papineau, author of GED4WEB, just for the GuestBook messages. It has 3+ years of Guestbook messages available for your research. Thousands of messages, surnames, email addresses and names of those who posted the messages. - - And SEARCHABLE - -
* This service is FREE with no limits of requests to anyone. *
Please go SIGN our GenServ GuestBook again. This time think of it as a query board. Post several queries about all of your lines. We will be posting the new messages in our GuestBook to the new search area about once a week. Post often to our GenServ GuestBook and we hope you will find this a good tool for your family research.
* For you this may also be the time to send us a new GEDCOM data file * as a replacement for the one we have.... if so, Please do that.
Where is it ? The URL for the new server is:
http://raven.genserv.net/search.htm
Please note: The above URL has .net in it. This URL is only for the Guestbook Search system.

I, too, had an experience in getting scriptures back to the proper family. In this case is was an LDS "3 in 1". It had the name of Elise Olson inside the cover and gave the name of her father, saying it had belonged to him. I traced the names on the new familysearch.org and also the ancestral file at a FHC and came up with a submitter. She, however was a very distant relative and she suggested the following site called past connections. And it worked!! I was able to give the book to a 2ggrandaughter of Elise. And she belonged to a family organization so it will be shared by many.
I have pasted the description and address of the site below.

Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone.
Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date.
When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least.
The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task.
So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918.
And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left.
For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344
In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies.
The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG>
If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>.
And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION LINEAGE BOOKS (136 Vols.)
We have just increased this already large and popular database by adding three more volumes. This addition brings the total number of volumes to 133.
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution is one of the oldest organizations in the United States dedicated to the preservation of American Revolutionary War genealogies. This database, containing references to Revolutionary War ancestors and their descendants, was created from "Lineage Books of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution." These lineage books contain information submitted by tens of thousands of individuals with connections to Revolutionary War patriots. This collection now contains over 2.1 million names and is a valuable collection for anyone with ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. At Ancestry.com, we look forward to increasing the size of this extremely valuable database. Return often as the size of this valuable database is periodically increased.
Bibliography: "Lineage Books of the Charter Members of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution", - Vol. I-CXXXIII (133). Note on Publishing: Since this database represents a compilation of 125 volumes, the years and locations of copyright information varies, according to each volume, i.e. Volume 8 was published in 1899 in Washington, D.C., whereas volume 63 was published in 1923, also in Washington, D.C.

10 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET MORE FROM ONLINE RESEARCH TIME by Juliana Smith
<<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>>
===========================================
1) Think of a trip to a computer like a trip to the library. You wouldn't go to the library unprepared, so do a little preparatory work before you log on. I keep a 3-ring binder with printed pedigree charts and family group sheets on my desk. The binder also contains blank pages where I can make notes of ideas for new research strategies, sites I want to investigate later, etc.
2) With the immense array of resources available online (and new sites going up every day) it is impossible to keep track of where you have searched, when, and for what. Keeping a research log of sites visited, searches performed, and results can save much duplicated effort. I keep my log in a spreadsheet form and keep the log open as I search. Then I can simply copy/paste the URL into the document and keep track of my searches as I go. With Web sites that are constantly being updated and/or added to, you may want to go back every so often to recheck them. Your log can tell you when you last checked a site. Those with a preference for a paper copy, can use the downloadable Research Calendar at: http://www.ancestry.com/download/forms.htm to record searches.
3) Determine what information you need. While it can be fun to wander aimlessly about the Web, most of us have a limited amount of time that we can spend surfing for ancestors. Go over your research and decide what information you are looking for. Once you have decided on a particular piece of information that is missing, pursue it.
4) Don't just search for surnames. If you know your ancestors were from a particular location, find out all you can about their hometown or homeland. While learning about an area, you will often find clues that will open up new avenues of research.
5) Learn. How-to, beginner sites, and specialized sites dealing with specific record types, geographic areas, repositories, and/or ethnicity abound. Use them to locate new resources and methods for conducting your search. The Ancestry.com Learning Center contains a wide variety of information and helpful articles, all in one place at: http://www.ancestry.com/research/index.htm
6) If you don't find the information you seek online, use online sources to determine what offline avenues are available to you.
7) When you find a pertinent piece of information, make sure you record the full bibliographic citation. If it is not available on the Web site, write the webmaster and request it. Citing your sources is critical both online and off.
8) Post queries on sites like FamilyHistory.com (http://www.familyhistory.com), where large numbers of researchers visit regularly and where the people that may have the information you seek have a good chance of seeing your post. You might also want to consider posting your GEDCOM online. By submitting your tree to large collections like the World Tree (http://www.ancestry.com/worldtree/tree.htm), you can also increase your chances of locating elusive cousins.
9) Once you log off, follow through by proving your findings with original primary source documents. Online resources are secondary sources at best, and often contain errors. Additionally, there is often much more information in the original documents.
10) Have some fun with it! Every so often when you have the time, go off and explore a bit. You'll be surprised at what you can find in unexpected places!

Virginia Colonial Soldiers
Since the first settlers landed in Jamestown in 1607, Virginia was largely a military colony and remained such for many years. This database is a listing of men who served in the colonial militia from those early years as a mere settlement up until the early 1770s. It was compiled in 1913 from sources available to the author in the Virginia State Library. Researchers will find the name of soldier and the reference in the original work where the record was found. Containing the names of over 6000 men, it can be an extremely helpful resource for those seeking colonial Virginia ancestors.

First settled by Virginian emigrants, North Carolina was the destination of immigrants from many locations throughout the colonial period. This database is a collection of will abstracts in the state between 1760 and 1800. Each entry contains the year of filing and name of the person filing the will. Also provided are family members mentioned in the will including, but not limited to, spouse and children. With over 10,000 entries, it contains nearly 50,000 names. For researchers of colonial North Carolina ancestors this can be a valuable collection of records.

A resident of Wisconsin, Robert La Follette was an important player in the politics of this Midwestern state from his election as a district attorney in 1880 to his presidential campaign of 1912. This database is his autobiography published in 1913. In these writings La Follette traces his political life and accomplishments as a lawyer and politician. Researchers will find detailed descriptions of the political movements and currents in the Midwest before and after the turn of the twentieth century. For those attempting to understand the larger context in which their Wisconsin ancestors may have lived, this can be a fascinating and informative database.

===========================================

<<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> North Carolina Will Abstracts, 1760-1800

<<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> Midwest Pioneers: La Follette's Autobiography

Greetings to all my Whitney List friends:
I can look out and see the boats running out on the Chesapeake Bay (actually the Tangier Sound of the Bay), and then I have to look back inside and see the hundred+ boxes all over the house. I just got the new modem for my recently acquired laptop (the old one didn't work at all), and had 859 messages today to catch up on. I'll get back to genealogy as soon as I can get an electrician to wire the upstairs with phone lines and jacks and get my desktop set up again.
Until then, I'll just read and enjoy the traffic. Congratulations to Robert on his article and to Rob ert and Tim for the additions to the web page.

Any of you interested in Partridge families, please take note of the following important information. We all need to change our data so errors can be corrected -- especially any on-line Gedcoms and data, now that doing genealogy on-line has become so popular. It's difficult to squelch inaccuracies -- but we can certainly try!

Volume 98, page 194
Mrs. Angeline Jennett Warren Colegrove. DAR ID Number: 97626 Born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Wife of Edward Colegrove. Descendant of William Warren, as follows: 1. Any of you interested in Partridge families, please take note of the following important information. We all need to change our data so errors can be corrected -- especially any on-line Gedcoms and data, now that doing genealogy on-line has become so popular. It's difficult to squelch inaccuracies -- but we can certainly try!

Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Can someone help?
To: [email protected]
I remember that fairly recently I read an article about a WHITNEY involved in an indian attack. She was a schoolteacher and defended her students. I just can't remember if this was in my Pierce Project editing, on the WHITNEY-L mailing list, or elsewhere. I found the following reference on page 237 of Pierce (to be posted soon) and wanted to see if the two items were related. Can anyone help?
ORLANDO, b. Mar. 27, 1792; m. and went to Texas. I suppose
died there. It is supposed that a school teacher by the name of WHITNEY, who, with her school, was attacked by Indians in Western Texas a number of years ago, and who lost her life in successfully defending her pupils, was a daughter of Orlando, but could get no positive proof.
This Orlando was the son of JONATHAN WHITNEY (David, Jonathan, Jonathan, Benjamin, John).

Proposed 1850 Census Project
Since the Whitney Research Group's Pierce Project is nearing completion and has been such a success, I would like to propose we undertake another substantial project. I suspect this project would be of great benefit to us and to numerous future Whitney researchers. This is not a small project, and requires different skills than the Pierce Project. What I propose is that our group undertake the extraction of all Whitney families in the 1850 Census. Why 1850? Census records from years prior to 1850 do not contain the names of all family members and would thus not be as much of a benefit, and our group does not yet have complete indexes for later census years. The data obtained from the 1850 census should enable us to extend many families listed in Pierce and it should allow us to greatly increase the data in our GEDCOMs. With this data we should be able to help many researchers with unconnected Whitney lines than we are currently able to help. Here is how I propose we accomplish this task:
1. A list will be made of all Whitneys in the various 1850 Census
indexes and sorted by locality. Microfilm numbers will be looked up and added and the list resorted by microfilm number, and further sorted by page number/locality.
2. Sets will be created for volunteers to adopt. These sets will
typically be all Whitney families on one roll of microfilm. If there are too many families on any particular roll, the roll will be broken up into 2 or more sets, as needed.
3. Volunteers will sign up for (adopt) a set and will obtain the
microfilm using whatever method they wish - a local library, Family History Center, AGLL film loan, etc. ALL data for the families should be looked up and written down.
4. The extracted data will then be submitted to the project in
an organized manner. I am still brainstorming on how this step might be automated.
5. Links could be made from our indexes to the actual census data. 6. Other census years can be undertaken if the 1850 Project is
a success.
So that's my proposed project. Is it too large an undertaking for our group? Would the resulting data be useful to us? What do you think? Would you be willing to volunteer?
Note: All WRG researchers should keep an eye out for any Whitney family in any source - including census records. If you see any Whitneys out there, please extract it and post it to the list!

Tim, Sounds like a good project, but doesn't it kind of duplicate the work being done by GenWeb on their census efforts? I realize this would be specific to WHITNEY surname, but sometims that specificity is a disadvantage when seeking neighbors, etc. who may be relatives. Just two cents worth.
>Note: All WRG researchers should keep an eye out for any Whitney >family in any source - including census records. If you see any >Whitneys out there, please extract it and post it to the list! > I posted some of this back in the dark ages when Jeanne Muse was sending out the Whitney newsletter. It was 10/5/96 if anyone has them archived. I am posting it this way because two of Josiah's daughters married Whitney men. None of this is in my line, just found while digging through the haystack in search of the proverbial needle. Thought I should post it before I delete it from my data. Hope it helps someone. If so give me a holler and I'll give what little documentation I have.

Dear WRG:
Boy, when Tim thinks big, he thinks BIG! It sounds like a wonderful idea to me, and I'll be in there pitching after about six more weeks. That's about how long it is going to take to get rid of all of the boxes that cannot be put off long term. I am still waiting for the electrician to do the wiring of phone lines in the upstairs so I can start setting up our "genealogy room/office" in the largest spare bedroom. I'm really looking forward to getting off this laptop. As much as I love it for what it will do in the future, it is NOT something to use to handle everyday work, especially anything that requires any extensive typing.
Thanks to all who have sent me good luck and welcome to retirement messages. I have tried to respond to every one individually. Dennis will miss us pretty much, except we may get some most welcome rain here in Maryland. The sun us setting over the Bay and I have to get off line and help open and stow another box before my goodwife will feed me.
Happy Hunting:-)

typically be all Whitney families on one roll of microfilm.

I've already have a large portion of the Allen and Barren Co. KY. Whitneys sitting in my files. If folks are for it I'll take care of them.

You can fold in the Michigan Whitney's of 1850 I have collected in whatever form you like. It would be nice if there was a form on the page, so as people identify their Whitney ancestors of 1850, they could type in a source and identification, so over the long term, the database would become more complete. Tim, I will be glad to help although it may be hard to find the Census. I have limited time to go to the library or LDS family centers. I will try though. How will you disperse the Census for each person? I live in New York State. Thanks, Sheila Stratton-Peel granddaughter of Mabel Grace Whitney [email protected]

Tim, I'd be willing to do what I can with the Wisconsin Whitneys. I have decent access to records here, but haven't truly looked at the Wisconsin Census records, as they haven't become an issue with my research.
