Dear friends,

In Prentiss Glazier's article about Ebenezer-3 WHITNEY, which you can see at <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/sources/ebenezer.html>, at the end he makes an interesting speculation: "Zachariah How witnessed the receipt of Anna (-----)(Whitney) Comins for her share of the estate of her son Ebenezer. Since the eldest son's name was Zachariah, the possibility of relationship should be probed."

I posted a query to NORTHEAST-ROOTS-L concerning the identity of this gentleman. In response, I got the following message:

>Date: Wed, 02 Dec 1998 07:08:42 -0500 >From: "David P. Wilson" <[email protected]> >To: <img src="/robertward.gif"> >Subject: ZACHARIAH HOW > >Good Morning, > Your message was forwarded to me early this morning by a friend who is >on the Northeast list. I live near Pomfret and do research for fee. I >could try to find what you want but you have given little information. >Do you know any more tht I could use for reference? > >David P. Wilson >Researching Eastern CT Families"

I responded with more information, and asked about his fees. Then he wrote:

>Date: Wed, 02 Dec 1998 15:15:31 -0500 >From: "David P. Wilson" <[email protected]> >To: "Robert L. Ward" at <img src="/robertward.gif"> >Subject: Re: ZACHARIAH HOW > >Robert, > I do charge an hourly fee, usually $25.00 an hour with an hour minimum, >but since it is a nearby location and you want specific information, I'm >willing to go to Pomfret and spend a reasonable amount of time in >research, for $25.00. If any descendant is interested in pursuing this lead, you may contact Dave Wilson yourself. I am not interested in hiring him, at least not yet! You may use my name.

Subject: WHITNEY Census Records database References: <[email protected]> To: [email protected]

Hello all, I spent some time last weekend puting together a database in a spreadsheet format from the Vermont and New Hampshire Census records in the Whitney Family Genealogy pages. By sorting and filtering by dates, towns, counties, etc., I've been able to gather together a few more clues for myself. I'd be happy to share this with anyone who may be interested. Just drop me an e-mail and I'll send it. It is in Excel 97 format, but I can convert it to other formats such as Excel 5.0 MS Works, etc. for you before I send it.

I'm trying to find information on Sarah Louise (Baker) Whitney. She was born approx 1846 in New York, to Ephriam Baker, and Nancy(Head)Baker. The Whitney she married is said to have been a cousin of hers, and he is also believed to be kin to Eli Whitney. Sarah appears on the 1880 Yankton,South Dakota Census as,

S.L. Whitney, age 34..She appears in the household of her mother,

Nancy Baker, age 64. Please, any help is greatly appreciated. I'm trying to find out more about Sarah, and trying to find out WHICH one of the Whitney's she married...and how he fits in with the Eli Whitney family. Thank you in advance. JudyAnn [email protected]

Dear Elizabeth:

I think that is a Microsoft Works database file. Tim may have some suggestions. Here's the only one I can think of. If you have a good database program, open it and see if it has a utility to convert a file from MSWorks into whatever database you use. I haven't tried to open mine, yet. I've got an older FoxPro for Windows that I have not yet installed on my newer computer, so I'll have to do that first. Let me know how it comes out. If you have trouble, maybe Colleen can export from that program into another format for us. All else failing, she can turn it into a word processing file by exporting it as a .txt, and we can put it into whatever WP program we use.

From: [email protected] Date: Sun, 13 Dec 1998 05:41:51 EST Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Rootsweb Policy on HTML, etc. To: [email protected]

Dear WRG:

I got this tonight from a post to another list. It explains why Rootsweb, which hosts our WRG maillist, will refuse mail that includes HTML, RichText and attachments. I hope this helps everyone.

Allan E. Green

Hi --

The message you submitted to this list (included above) wasn't sent to the list subscribers. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text, and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML or ``Enriched Text features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help.

We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text.

Dear NE-Rooters and Whitney List:

The Ipswich Vital Records have, as far as I have been able to determine from Whitney extracts, a notice of intent to marry for Dr. Elisha Whitney and Mrs. Eunice Farley, dated 22 Jun 1776. Their first child, Elisha Whitney (Jr.) was born 7 Oct 1777 in Beverly. Is there an actual marriage record for these two in either of those places? Is there in the Ipswich VRs a record of an earlier marriage of a woman named Eunice to a man named Farley? If so, is there anything there that would identify this Eunice by her maiden surname and provide information about her parents?

Seven of the eleven children of Dr. Elisha and Eunice Whitney, all born in Beverly, were then seemingly taken to Ipswich for baptism in The Hamlet Parish Church (source, Ipswich VR Whitney extracts). This might well suggest that Eunice was from that place and that her parents were still there. This practice, which began with the first son in 1778, stopped after the birth of the seventh child (Lucy) in 1791.

A further problem (for me) exists with this family in that there were twin daughters named Mariam and Mary Ann, born in Beverly on 5 Feb 1800. The deaths in the Beverly VR extracts show an entry as follows:

Mariam [Mary Ann, G.R.4] d. Elisha and Eunice [dysentery, C.R.1] May
         25, 1802, a. 2y. 3m.

The G.R.4 is keyed to the Hale Street Cemetery, and the C.R.1 is keyed to the records of the First Parish Unitarian Church. My question is, did only one or did both of these children die on this date? It seems unlikely after 2 years and 3 months that they would both perish on the same date, unless they were Siamese twins, which is a most remote possibility.

Any assistance on these questions would be most gratefully received, by me AND the members of the Whitney Research Group.

few Questions and some information. 1. Would the person who has a copy of Ami Sr.'s will please E-mail me. 2. I can prove my lineage through census and other records to his son Isaac b. 9/17/1805 d. 10/17/1876. I could use some help making this link. 3. Why is his father Jonathan4 listed as Capt. if he was a sergeant in the Revolutionary War? 4. I found no pension application at NARA for him, and will now look for the service record for his regiment. 5. As stated above I am looking in the Revolutionary War records at my local NARA. If any one would want pension record information please E-mail me, for I have made copies of some and can look up others upon request. Thank you all very much for your patience and nurse-maiding in this endeavor. Also, I very large THANK YOU for the information on the wep page!! Sincerely, Denis Adams 2665 Favor Rd. 'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill fated boat."

Stacks of old copies of wills and the such Were proof that my work had become much to much.

Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop >From work on my album with photos to crop.

Christmas was here, and of such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I forgot. Had I not been so busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills.

While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer; I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years.

While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear? But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer.

Up to the housetop the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys, and Saint Nicholas too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. The TV antenna was no match for their horns, And look at our roof with hoof-prints adorned.

As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa - KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy; When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!)

"Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned. As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amazement - the cover it read "Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead." "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug," He said as he gave me a a great Santa Hug.

"While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folks who can't find a thing. Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess."

As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team which then rose like the down of a thistle And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,

"Family History is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!

Does anyone have any information on Charles D. Whitney, born about 1882 in Franklin, MA, married 12-Jul-1905 to Grace Belle Welsh, died about 1959 in Franklin, MA and buried in Union Cemetery, Franklin, MA. He was a mill superintendent in Roxbridge, Worcester county, MA in 1920. Grace was an active genealogist and I have quite a bit of information on her side of the family, but nothing more than I have presented on her husbands.

Charles may have had sisters named Marian or Mattie, and Mattie may have owned or operated a hotel in Maynard.

Charles and Grace had one child, Clara Spalding Whitney who was born 1908 in Clinton MA and died 1978 in Wellesly, MA. She is also buried in Union Cemetery, Franklin, MA.

Would anyone have suggestions for Allison regarding finding a cotton gin in her area (NY, NY)? A museum, perhaps?

What about the Eli Whitney museum at Yale University? Have no idea if there is a model there but worth looking into. Maybe New Haven too far from NYC.

I have apparent brothers Thomas J Whitney and Wade Whitney marrying a mother and her daughter. Thomas J Whitney b.1819 KY married Susanna Jones Combs b.1802 Green Co, KY around 1845. They had a son Thomas I Whitney b.1845 Holt Co, MO. Susanna was probably divorced from her first husband John Combs who died in 1857. Her daughter Melissa Combs b.1833 Green Co,KY married Wade H Combs 9/25/1853 Holt Co,MO. I found BLM land claims for a Wade H WHitney in Howard Co, MO from 1828-1843. I don't know if this is the same Wade or perhaps a father? Can anyone connect this Whitney family and I have no info on their descendants. I found Susanna living as a widow with her son Silas Combs so I presume she outlived Thomas. I never found any record of their son Thomas. I also cannot find where Melissa and Wade went. There is a Wade Whitney in KS in the 1860's but he has a different wife. I have no dates for Wade. Can anyone help?

Dear WRG members:

For the benefit of those of you who are new, I have posted from time to time some warnings about a company named Halbert's - usually of Ira Road in Bath, OH. They have used the mass mailing process to offer what they represent to be a genealogical book about your family. They have been cited many times for fraudulent advertising by the Postal Service, and are currently under some restraining and cease and desist orders with respect to their marketing practices.

They have recently come up with a new scam and a new address from which to run it, to trap the unwary. I include below a warning I copied from another list about the details.

I hope everyone has a delightful holiday. Sincerely, Allan E. Green
