I UNDERSTAND NOW!!! By the way, working backwards a little on my search, in all of the Whitney's recorded, do you see any whitney (maybe James Whitney) married to a Ruth lee, a cousin of Robert E, Lee??? That James Whitney might be my gg or ggg grandfather.
Having a hard time getting the whitney crest on my homepage but I will keep trying.
Best regards from Texas ralph

Dear Member;
I want to apologize to everyone on the list for the multiple lists that
I sent out today. Pacific Bell went through an upgrade Saturday and caused a system change. Apparently nothing went through the first time I sent the VR list. When I sent them again, they had undergone a change in the layout, causing difficulty in printing and reading. Because of this, I re-worked them and sent them out again! I hope that it has not created a big confusion about which list to copy. The reformatted list should come through okay.
With regret for the confusion, Brenda Nichols

Thanks to all who responded to my plea for advice about dealing with date discrepancies between a family Bible in my possession and data in WITNEY11.GED. Briefly, John Whitney, Jr.'s (1749-1843) 1814 Bible (JWB) identifies him as son of John Whitney, who was son of Elijah Whitney, who was son of Daniel Whitney, and so forth. The name sequence matches one in WITNEY11.GED, but, unfortunately, the dates are discrepant, as follows:
Birth dates for Elijah Whitney:
WITNEY11.GED -- Jan. 15, 1714/15 JWB -- Jan. 07, 1716
Birth dates for John Whitney:
WITNEY11.GED -- Nov. 29, 1749 JWB -- Dec. 09, 1749
Several of you told me that minor discrepancies in dates are quite common. Most importantly, Robert L. Ward pointed out that the date of birth for Elijah Whitney in WITNEY11.GED is off by a year. He says that the Roxbury VRs show January 15, 1715/16, thereby reducing the discrepancy from a year to eight days. Moreover, the Roxbury VRs, being contemporary records, are more likely to be correct, a judgment that seems reasonable. I therefore conclude that my descent from John and Elinor Whitney is beyond reasonable doubt, and I am appending what additional information I presently have for six generations. (Joanne Hogle and I are grandchildren of Celia Agnes Setzler.) Note that I did not include data from WITNEY11.GED for Elijah Whitney's other children.
Perhaps someone can provide additional information on some of these folks. For example, JWB records no locations for anything. It shows birth, marriage, and death dates for Sally and Nancy Whitney, but only the last names of their husbands (Mayo and Fay). Most of the children of John Whitney, Jr. and Abigail Foster died young. When John died on July 3, 1839 (the last entry in the Bible, in a different hand), only sons Henry Payson Whitney and James Mason Whitney were still alive. The latter was pushing 13 when his father died, so he probably lived to adulthood. Is someone out there descended from him?
Joanne Hogle and I intend to flesh out the skeleton below as much as time permits. Last week, when inquiring by phone about some cemetary records, Joanne discovered that the "Mr. Henry" she was talking to was a descendant of Mary A. Whitney and Gideon Morris Henry, so filling in some of the Henrys should be a slam dunk.
Sooooooooooo... At some point, we want to contribute whatever we have to the main database. Who is keeper of the file? What is the procedure? How far should we take it before contributing it? Both of us are new to this group (not to mention relatively new to genealogy), so we need some advice here.
Speaking of advice, bludgeoning the appended data out of Family Tree Maker required patience and a bit of trickery, and I still had to do some hand formatting. I'm looking for software with more capability. What do other people use under Windows '95?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I only just accessed Tim Doyle's Whitney pages on the WWW. I found Micah, and his son, Benjamin. Benjamin married Susan Wells. I have additional information regarding this family.
I found Benjamin and Susan's family in the 1850 census of Phillips in Franklin Co, Maine. I extracted the following information:
Benjamin M. Whitney Age: 44 Male Occupation: Laborer Susan Whitney Age: 44 Female Phebe C. Whitney Age: 19 Female Thaxter L. Whitney Age: 18 Male Occupation: Farmer Martin P. Whitney Age: 15 Male Susan M. Whitney Age: 14 Female Clement Whitney Age 12 Male Clementine Whitney Age: 12 Female Benjamin D. Whitney Age: 8 Male
The census taker indicated that all the children had attended school within the year.
I believe I am connected to Thaxter Whitney, who is listed in Pierce's genaology as "Of El Paso, Texas". If anyone knows anything about him, please let me know.

I have a small amount of additional information from a source I used for my line (Micah's daughter Joanna). The names of the children are a little different but the general ages correspond. I believe that Thaxter L. corresponds with Royal T. ("T" for Thaxter?) from my source. It doesn't give much, but does place him in Texas.

Hi cousins,
Believe it or not we are very close to the end of the Massachusetts VR's. There are a about 20 towns left. Some of Which I haven't been able to find. I'll list those at the end if anyone can get hold of them.
Right now I have in my possession another 12-15, and Jan has another 3-4, which need transcribing. I was feeling a bit guilty the other night, sending these out to all my helpers. So I got one of my *brain storms*. What if I faxed myself the larger Vr's, saved them in my word processing program, then cut and pasted them to all of you. From what I understand, this does work with some fax programs. So decided to give it a try. So I marched myself 45 mins, down to my husbands office, compiled the VR's, a nd sent myself a 14 pg fax. Drove myself 45 min back home. Was all excited that the fax arrived without hitch, but guess what? My computer doesn't have that fancy fax program that allows me to save it under msworks, at least not in anything legible! Oh well, to make a short story long, Hold on to your seats, Brenda, Karen, and Jon, I'm sending you more VR's to scan. But please tell me when you've had enough.
Jan I'll take your larger ones and distribute them to whoever wants them.
Ok, the Vr's that still need looking up are:
CANTON FRANKLIN HANOVER HINGHAM MILTON NORTHBOROUGH SALEM SANDISFIELD STONEHAM TEWKSBURY WAYLAND WEST BOYLSTON WEST SPRINGFIELD WESTPORT WINDSOR WOBURN WORCESTER YARMOUTH
FITCHBURG wasn't listed as a town with Whitney data, but I have found evidence that there were in fact Whitney's there. Also the Vr's for that town are in a multi volume set, so the odds are....
When this is all said and done, this is going to be an awesome database. I have put all these vr's in a very full 4" binder, with each town tabbed and each page in a plastic sheet protector. The notebook weigh about 20#, but is real easy to do look ups. I guess the next step is to compile some sort of index with the names. Anyone have any ideas how this can be done?
Thanks again everyone!
Peg

Peg,
What is the ultimate plan for the Massachusetts VRs? I joined this list only a couple weeks ago, so I missed whatever discussion took place about that, not to mention most of the VRs posted. (I've been saving the ones that came in since I joined.)
One relatively easy solution to the indexing problem might be to put the whole works into one big HTML file with hot links to town names. Browsers all have some search capability, so people could search for names. Many word processors (WordPerfect, for example) can create word indexes, but these reference printed pages, and the page numbers might vary from one user to another, depending on the printer driver loaded. Besides, not everyone uses the same word processor, and even if we all did, I'm not sure it would be of value to have a page number for every "John" in the file (meaning every page in the file). Most other solutions I can think of would involve an enormous amount of wrok, and I'm not sure the game is worth the candle.
Whatever, thanks to you and the other volunteers who have spent so much time creating this resource.

The link between Sir Robert Whitney's third son Robert, and John Whitney of Watertown, MA, has been called into serious question by a pair of scholarly articles in 1933 and 1994. If you would like copies of these articles, Please reply to me, and I will forward them to you. In short, that Robert was apparently too young to be the father of Thomas Whitney of Westminster, father of the immigrant.
By the way, I applaud the use of documents such as those you cited in your message, but they must be properly interpreted in terms of the family as a whole and with careful attention to chronology and other details.

The second marriage of Benjamin-2 WHITNEY, to Mary POOR, is recorded on 13 Apr 1696 in Marlborough, MA (Vital Records of Marlborough, MA, to 1850, p. 326). In that record, he is called "of Framingham," so it would seem that she would have been of Marlborough. The first marriage of Benjamin-2 WHITNEY, to Jane -----, whatever her surname, has not been found recorded anywhere in New England. Possibly it may have occurred in York, ME, where Benjamin seems to have been living about the time when they must have been married. There seems to be no documentary evidence to support the allegation that Jane's surname was POOR or anything else. This renders your question about a relationship between the wives nonsensical. I know nothing about the birth and parentage of Mary POOR. It seems possible that she was a widow, although no record I have found sheds any light on that question. I descend from Benjamin-2 and Jane (-----) WHITNEY through their youngest son, Joshua-3.
If anyone can supply information to correct or amplify the above account, please send it to me and also forward it to the list.

Robert

I am new to the internet and just this weekend found the Whitney geneology online. I have much of the decendant information including some family pictures starting with Charles Bush Whitney to the present. I would like more information about the discussion group and how it works. My grandmother's surname was Whitney. I currently live in Cincinnati, but grew up in Kentucky.

I have a suggestion but am not certain about all the logistics. I think I can scan all of the records into my MSWORD, rearrange the data there into an index format and then copy via my clipboard into my MSWORD-EXCEL spread sheet data base and alphabatize it automatically there. . . then print it. Do you or any of the others more familiar with doing stuff like this see any road blocks? It may take come cutting and pasting but I think we could make it work. I can start with the few I have and do some experimenting. I also believe there is software that will produce an index from the text body . . . does anyone in the group do desk top publishing? They would know. Another source of ideas is Kinko's . . . they can do most anything in their computer department. Lets exchange information often as we work on this so when someone finds a good way, the rest of us can stop experimenting.
And can we put these VRs on the web? I have the necessary software downloaded to create a web page but have not even begun. I know for me it would be a few months before I have the time to complete the process.
Ralph, can we put the VRs on with the Crest? Or is there a better way to make access available to anyone hunting our Whitneys?
Ideas anyone? I know there have to be, this is the Whitney group! Karen

I haven't gotten mail from the Whitney mail list for three weeks, so I have no way of knowing if this gets to the list.
Allan indicated that the problem seemed to be restricted to Compuserve users. This is strange because I am getting mail regularly from several other lists on "rmgate".
I forwarded the Newbury VR's some time ago (about the time I stopped getting mail), and I have one comment to make on that list:
There is a marriage of Mary Whitney and Richard Flanders
(Mary, and Richard Flanders, int. Aug. 2, 1740.)
Since I have a Taft cousin named Richard Flanders I e-mailed him a message asking if that Newbury Richard was his line. He responded that it was indeed his line, but that the Flanders genealogies have Mary listed as MERCY Whitney. Since the correct name MAY be Mercy, it might be wise to include an editorial bracket in your records ...[Mercy?]
Allan, would you let me know if this is received?

<< I am new to the internet and just this weekend found the Whitney geneology online. The research I have on the first John Whitney family in America has several dates different from the ones presented online. >>
Hi Jewell and Group,
The reason for the dates you have not jiving with the dates for John Whitney's family is because your not part of that family. The orginal emmigrant to the US was Joshua Whitney who came to VA from Bermuda in 1721. His desc. are in VA, NC, KY mainly with with this generation breaking out all over the country. I'll paste up what I have at the bottom of this note and would really like what you have to and to my "Southern Whitney" database. I have the line back to Samuel Whitney, Sr. born in England about 1615 and died in Bermuda with his will proven in 1674. I know this is going to be a long chart at the bottom so if you get confused feel free to ask for help. As far as how the group works I think you just found out. Ask a question and see if you get an answer.

Dear WRG,
On my WHITNEY web page you will find a new link. Check out the following URL: http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/index.html (but careful! My username is RLWARD1, with second character "ell" and last character "one"). There you will find my attempt to reconstruct the first five generations of the John and Elinor (-----) WHITNEY family of New England.
I am aware that the WITNEY11 GEDCOM is on the web, in fact I have a link to it on my WHITNEY page. The debate about removing "wrong" information from that GEDCOM file does not apply to me, and I will gladly entertain correc- tions, provided they are supported by evidence. I am the final arbiter of what is sufficient evidence. I will also gladly incorporate additions. Feel free to contact me with any data you want added, and I will discuss the matter with you.
I am very unsatisfied with the state of the data, especially with regard to those branches of the family which emigrated from Massachusetts, to Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Nevertheless, I have incorporated much data which conflicts with both WITNEY11 and with Pierce's book. I feel that, with the help of those on this list, and with further research, we can create a definitive account of this family. Certainly something should be done to replace Pierce's book with something sensible!
Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about the Henry-1 WHITNEY family, so am unable to do something similar for that family.
Please be patient while I work on the index! I will also be adding and changing data from time to time as I work through some odds and ends of collected data in my files. Please feel free to suggest changes to the format of the pages, too!
My two lines are as follows: John-1, John-2, Nathaniel-3, Hannah-4 (m. Nathaniel Billings); and John-1, Benjamin-2, Joshua-3, Gershom-4, Sarah-5 (m. Jonathan FLAGG).
Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert and anyone else on the list who reads this.....
I finally got to the Whitney web site after following the traffic on the Whitney newsgroup for a while. I find that I can follow my tree down from John and Elinor to Hannah Pierce, dau of David4 Pierce and Elizabeth Bowers ... Unfortunately I show this Hannah Pierce (b March 9, 1731/32) as m Paul Wetherbee June 11, 1746 (at age 14?) (location ?) and m Josiah Flagg Nov 16, 1769 in Lunenburg, Worchester, MA...both marraiges possibly consistent with the marraige you show (Silas Buss, 23 Jul 1770 , Lunenburg). But since my info is from an undocumented gedcom I received from a relative ... I tend to be suspicious. Any ideas on straightening out this difference? I don't want to lose my Whitney link! ... Dear Randy:
More corrections for you. I would ask you to make the entry for Elinor (wife of immigrant John) read born ca 1597, and leave off the St. Margarets Warwick - since there is no St. Margarets parish anywhere in Warwickshire and that is an error that crept in from (I think) Ancestral File. Also John Whitney's entry should read ch. 20 Jul 1592, St. Margarets, Westminster, England, not in Isleworth, which is where he lived at the time of the birth of some of his children. I have seen the actual parish registers for St. Margarets Westminster, and can say from personal knowledge that the entry is there and not in the parish of Isleworth.

Hello
I noticed that Weston is not in the list of VRs. There must be a good reason. I have birth, marriage, and death dates for several WHITNEYs in Weston. Has it changed names?
Thanks Sandy

Dear Cousins--A few weeks back, just as we were discussing John and Rebeckah of Harvard and Shirley, MA, alot of my Whitney list mail was lost in the system..So I would like to bring up Rebeckah's origin again and please understand if this looks like a repeat. Jeanne Muse and RLWard have maintained in the past that she is a daughter to Moses(Richard, John). I have searched all the surrounding towns VR's to Stow, Sudbury, Cambridge, Watertown, Pierce, Bond and Savage and town histories without finding documentation of his family other than his marriage in Stow 30 Sept.1687 and birth of d. Sarah 2 July 1687, in Stow. I found no documentation of his birth in Concord Register, either. I have yet to find a Rebeckah Whitney that fits the dates, except for what I believe to be her death in Harvard( Rebeckah, wid., July 27,1780 "of advanced age." Church record). Can Jeanne or RLWard and anyone else give me some info on sources and reasons for your conclusions and cite sources for other children (other than assumptions by way of gravestones etc,) In another message, I will state why I came to agree that John was from Thomas line. I have alot of info to share from John and Rebeckah down, but want to clarify Rebeckah before sending it. Thanks Jan

Hi, I have Eli Whitney b. 3 May 1740 in Westborough married to Judith Hazletine on July 15, 1779 in Sutton, Mass. which matches the VR link from R. Ward's home page. On the database her name is listed as Judith Hazelden with m. date of June 12, 1779. Does anyone know which is correct? Thanks. mvb

Hi, another question. Is the correct spelling for the town of Westboro, Worcester, Ma W E S T B O R O, or is it W E S T B O R O U G H ? Or are there 2 towns with the same name? I find in my Hammond Atlas the Westboro spelling. Not real important, but I am curious. Thanks. mvb

I have all the children listed as being born in Westboro, Mass. and a few additional dates.
child 2 John b 20 Dec. 1751 + d. 7 Sept 1757
child 3 David b. 18 Apr 1754 + born in Royalston, Ma + d. 27 Dec. 1826
child 4 Jacob b. 20 Feb. 1756 + d. 3 March 1756
child 6 Lois b. 7 Sept. 1759 + b. 27 Dec. 1759
child 8 in data base as Jemima I have Jeremiah with same b. date but born in Westboro.
child 9 Silas b. 17 May 1766 + d. 5 July 1840
child 10 Joel b. 29 Jul 1768 + d. 20 Dec. 1776

I am happy to discuss this matter in detail. This is not something which is proven, but falls into the category of likely by a proponderance of the evidence.
By the way, the date of marriage of Moses-3 WHITNEY and Sarah KNIGHT was 30 Sep 1686, not 1687.
Rebecca WHITNEY "of Stow" married John WHITNEY "of Lancaster", 20 May 1724 in Lancaster. This indicates that Rebecca was living in Stow at the time of the marriage, undoubtedly with family members. I have no record of her birth, nor that of any of the children of Moses-3 WHITNEY, except the Sarah-4 mentioned above. There is, however, a record of the death of Ephraim, son of Moses and Sarah WHITNEY, on 4 May 1723 in Stow [VR]. The birth dates of some other putative children of Moses-3 WHITNEY are derived from ages at death from their tombstones: Moses-4, b. 15 Jun 1689 [Littleton VR]; Abraham-4, b. 29 May 1692 [Stow VR]; Jonas-4, b. 1 Feb 1698/99 [Stow VR]; Jason-4, b. ca. 1704 [Stow VR]; and Lemuel-4, b. 1 Aug 1706 [Stow VR]. Apparently the births were not recorded in any of the towns in Massachusetts in which the family lived. According to the date of her marriage, the age of her husband, and the dates of birth of her children, it would be reasonable to guess that she might have been born in the 1700-1705 timeframe.
Apparently Moses-3 WHITNEY did not leave any probate records in Middlesex County, MA, so we are left without a record of his heirs. Combined with the lack of recording of his children's births, this leaves us in doubt as to which of the young WHITNEY individuals in Stow in the 1710's and 1720's may have been his children.
The printed sources for the children of Moses-3 and Sarah (KNIGHT) WHITNEY which I have found and used are: Henry Austin Whitney, "The Descendants of John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown, Mass.," _The_New_England_Historical_ _and_Genealogical_Register_, vol. 11 (1857), p. 118; Henry Bond, _Genealogies_and_History_of_Watertown,_Mass._ (1859), vol. 1, p. 644; Frederic Clifton Pierce, _Whitney_-_Descendants_of_John_Whitney_, (1895); and William Lebbeus Whitney, _Some_of_the_Descendants_of_John_and_Elinor_Whitney_ (1890).
H. A. Whitney mentions a deed of Moses-3 WHITNEY dated 1725 to son Abraham-4, mentioning other sons Moses-4 and Jason-4, and his brother Richard-3 WHITNEY. He lists the children as Sarah-4, Moses-4, Abraham-4, Jonas-4, Jason-4, Lemuel-4 "youngest son" per father's deed, and ??John-4, of Lancaster, parentage unknown, m. Rebecca WHITNEY of Stow. By the way,
W. L. Whitney essentially agrees with Pierce.
Bond gives only the marriage of Moses-3 to Sarah KNIGHT, and omits mention of any children. This is because apparently none of them or their descendants lived in Watertown.
Pierce lists Abraham-4, Jonas-4, Lemuel-4, John-4 (who was actually son of Isaiah-3).
What WHITNEY families lived in Stow in the 1720s? They seem all to have been descendants of either Richard-2 or Thomas-2. Richard-2 had three sons: Moses-3 above, Richard-3, and Ebenezer-3. Richard-3 and Elizabeth (SAWTELL) WHITNEY were married in 1691, but had no daughter Rebecca, as is revealed by his will, which talks of "my eight children" and names them. His sons were too young to have been Rebecca's father, so his progeny are thereby eliminated. Ebenezer-3 WHITNEY moved from Stow to Canterbury, CT, before 1715, and so he was not living in Stow at the time of Rebecca's marriage, and had not been for some 9 or more years. He, too, was too young to have been Rebecca's grandfather. Thomas-2 WHITNEY had three sons who married and had children: Thomas-3, Eleazer-3, and Isaiah-3. Thomas-3 WHITNEY m. 1678/9 Elizabeth LAWRENCE, and in a deed of 26 Feb 1721/2, mentioned his wife and all his children except Thomas and Benjamin, none of whom was named Rebecca. If she was unmarried at the time, and his daughter, she would have been included. Eleazer-3 lived in Sudbury, Concord, and Watertown, but not Stow, and his children's births are well-recorded, including no Rebecca. Isaiah-3 is ruled out as father of Rebecca if you believe that her husband John WHITNEY was the son of Isaiah-3 born 6 Dec 1698 in Lexington, since she could hardly have married her brother! The only grandson of Thomas-2 who might have been her father, being old enough, married before 1705, and having resided in Stow, was Thomas-4 WHITNEY, who m. 26 Jul 1704, Concord, Mary BAKER, the groom being called "of Stow".
This analysis leads to one of two conclusions: either Rebecca was a daughter of Moses-3 and Sarah (KNIGHT) WHITNEY, or else a daughter of Thomas-4 and Mary (BAKER) WHITNEY.
This leads to the question of the parentage of the other problem WHITNEY girl in the Stow VR: Damaras WHITNEY and Cyprian STEEVENES had their intentions published 12 Mar 1725/6, both of Stow. The same kind of analysis can be applied to this person, although she could have been born as late as 1708.
What about onomastics? The names Rebecca and Damaris are quite rare in the early generations of the WHITNEY family. The only other Damaris I find is a daughter of Jason-4 above, leading to the guess that the younger Damaris-5 might have been named for the older one, who would most likely have been a sister of Jason-4. The only other early Rebecca I find is Rebecca-3, a sister of Moses-3 who died in infancy, when Moses-3 was six years old. It would suggest that the Rebecca in question might have been named by Moses-3 for his deceased sister, even though forty years later. I also note that it is reported by W. L. Whitney that Jonas-4 had a daughter Rebecca-5, who may have been named for the Rebecca in question (although no other source I have found seems to mention such a daughter). I have very little data to go on concerning the family names used in the families of the wives of any of these men, which might shed a different light on this matter.
The process of elimination leads us to only two viable theories as to the parentage of Rebecca and Damaris WHITNEY, and of the two, onomastics lead us to believe that one is to be preferred over the other. I conclude that it is likely, although unproved, that both Rebecca and Damaris WHITNEY were daughters of Moses-3 and Sarah (KNIGHT) WHITNEY.
Another possibility not considered above is that she was a widow at the time of her marriage, and that her maiden name might have been something other than WHITNEY. I can find no record of a wife named Rebecca for any early WHITNEY other than Rebecca BURGE, b. 5 Nov 1683, who m. Joseph-3 WHITNEY [Jonathan-2, John-1] on 27 May 1706. She lived in Chelmsford, and was bearing children to Joseph-3 as late as 1726, and is thus eliminated. While I cannot disprove the possibility that she might have been a widow, it has no supporting evidence to render it credible.
Further research on this matter is clearly needed. Deeds in Middlesex Co., MA, need to be thoroughly examined, not just for this family, but for all the WHITNEY persons who were grantees or grantors. If town records of Stow can be found, they should be consulted. Probate records of Worcester Co. should also be searched. I note that we do not even know the date of Moses-3 WHITNEY's death, although it must have been after the 1725 deed cited by H. A. Whitney.
I welcome further discourse on this subject.
Regards,
Robert

Hi cousins,
Guess what? We are at the end of the MA Vr's. I thought for sure this project would take ate least a year I can't beleive we're at the end. It's AWESOME! Everyone has been super at helping, Thank-you. The following towns are still pending(meaning waiting to be transcribed/scanned) are Nantucket, New Salem, Northborough, Roxbury, Royalston, Uxbridge and Westborough. To those I sent them to to be scanned. If you sent them already, please resend them as I haven't seen them yet. If you haven't gotten to them yet, that's ok too just let me know if you received them, so I can either resend or type them out. It's school vacation week, I have the time. Who cares about housework!!!!
The following towns I have not been able to find, but do have Whitney listings: Canton, Franklin, Hingham, Milton, and Worcester. HELP is needed. If anyone has access to these towns, PLEASE photocopy and send to me to transcribe.
New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Conneticut(?sp), Rhode Island, and New York are next in the VR saga. However these towns are not as easily accessable to me. I've returned fll time to work, so my "fun" time as become quite limited-pitts!. If anyone can pull these records and send them to me, I'll either transcribe them myself are send them out to be scanned. What you can get I'll take. Sound desperate don't I? Nah, not really. Just excited. I can't wait until I'm able to fill in the gaps on my own line!
Peace! Peg Sanborn

WRG:
Hip, Hip, Hooray for Peg Sanborn. What a credit she is to our Whitney Research Group. I hope that the end result of this project is a flood of mail to Jon Aston as more and more people find the links they need through these VR's and expand their own descendancy from our collective Whitney heritage. Joan Hicks, are you still keeping up with the CT Whitneys? MAL said something in a direct message about your having been under the weather recently. I certainly hope that it's behind you now and that you are feeling better.
What is the status of adding the CT Whitney info and the "VA and points south Whitneys" to Randy Winch's Whitney pages? Likewise, is there any reasonable way the "unconnected Whitneys" can get their bits and pieces in there as well. It just seems to me that the more that this data is available to more people to see, the greater the opportunity we have of someone spotting a link.
In some cases I know that a few of us are a little hesitant to "publish" something that is not yet solidly pinned down with good sources. I am in that boat myself, with several linkages. Perhaps what we need is a method to clearly show elements and data that have a need for further documentation and sourcing, while still putting what might be termed as "tentative" or "as yet unproven" information out where someone else may find it and assist us in making the connection to the data source that will confirm, rule out, or clarify the indicated problem. I would be interested in seeing a discussion of this idea by various members of the group. We have among us a number of highly skilled researchers who have consistently demonstrated a stringent dedication to sourcing and documentation, and one or more of them might be willing to suggest a better idea than that I have proposed above.
Let me end as I began, with an heartfelt thanks to Peg and the rest of the wonderful people who have worked so hard on this project to the benefit of us all.
Happy Hunting!
Allan E. Green

WRG,
During my trip to the library I found little tidbits of information from the book, "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield" pub by Genealogical Publishing Co.
The following are marriage records that I was able to find:
pg.179 Hannah Darling b.[say 1689], d.Fairfield,20 Oct 1774, m.(rec.Norwalk)

I sent this out previously but did not see it come through. If this is a duplicate, please forgive me. Can you help me?
Hi Everyone,
I am desperately in need of proof of death for John Perkins and Polly Everett (Whitney) Perkins.
John was born 25 Feb 1789 at Leominster, MA and died at Morris, IL 3 Nov 1868. He married Polly on 6 Feb 1816. He was the son of Benjamin and Lydia (Hawkes) Perkins.
Polly was born 25 Oct 1792 at Westminster, MA, and died at Morris, IL 10 Aug 1874. She was the daughter of Jonas and Betsy (Raymond) Whitney.
I need this proof to complete my SAR application. Morris, IL does not have death records prior to 1878.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to sharing information with you.

Dear cousins,
Boy have I've been flooded with mail, Thank you all for the words of praise and thanks. You guys are really AWESOME. But aren't all Whitneys!?!
My next tidbit of info:
1st-thank you Gene for the publishing info for New England Marriages. Here it is, Torrey,Clarence Almon, New England Marriages prior to 1700, Genealogical Publishing Co.,Inc. Baltimore, 1985. Please make the correction on the NE marriage Vr's that were sent.
2nd-I found information on John and Elinor son Benjamin. Again for what it's worth, here goes; Taken from Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hamphire, pub by Genealogical Publiching Co. (as above).

I hope this doesn't come out all messed up. Benjamin's children were, Jane, Benjamin, Jonathan, John, Nathaniel and Joshua. My records state that Benjamin had 9 children, not 6 as is listed above. However I didn't have names. I also have Benjamin's date of death as 26 Mar 1723 in Sherborn. Let me know of any corrections.

Of the towns in Massachusetts which are not listed by you, I have found some records of WHITNEY people in the published Vital Records of the following towns:
Auburn, Boston, Braintree, Dorchester, Lincoln, Littleton, Lunenburg, Oxford, Palmer, Pelham, Peru, Phillipston, Reading, Rochester, Southborough, Spencer, Tisbury, Warren, Washington, Wayland, Weston, Westport, West Springfield, Windsor, and Wrentham.
If you have already done any or all of these, then I have not seen the listings sent out to the mailing list. If your source says that there are no WHITNEY people in these town VRs, then it is wrong. I have not copied all WHITNEY entries from these, but could supply partial listings. I also have partial listings for Canton, Milton, and Worcester. Recall also that my partial listing for Watertown should be completed by someone else, so should be added to the list of unfinished towns.

Robert

I regret to inform you that the author of this is incorrect. He was merely following Phoenix's genealogy, which is also erroneous. The proof of the ancestry of Samuel WHITNEY of Stratford lies in papers in the settlement of the estate of his true father, Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY [John-2, John-1], of Weston, Middlesex Co., MA, in which Samuel WHITNEY of Stratford was listed as an heir, and his attorney gave a receipt for his portion. He was born 17 Jul 1687 in Watertown, MA.

Hi Robert, If you have read all the messages to the group lately you will see that Robin Stanley and I have corresponded about this info that Peg Sanborn so graciously sent on to us about Henry- John and children. When Robin said this was his or her Henry, (don't know if Robin is boy or girl, sorry) and that the ancestry is thru John's son Nathan, I said I did not have a record of a grandson of Henry called Nathan, is there one? Or is this person also mixed up by some of the Pheonix book? We know that Samuel m Ann Laboree is not Henry's line, that has been discussed before. I had not realized it was the wrong birthdate also. I do see a Nathan on that list that Peg sent now-is it Henry's grandson? Or is that the other John and Elinor line also? Please straighten us out on this if you can. Do you have the CT Whitney FTW that Joan Hicks worked so hard on? I can send it to you if you like, I will look for a Nathan as a grandson of Henry, 1620. Meantime, please jump in here and help us out, anyone who knows our Henry's line. We will get back to you Robin. And thanks Peg for all your hard work. It is our job to sort it all out I guess. Appreciate anyone's help, I am getting better at this thanks to all you fantastic researchers. Thanks, MAL

Forgot to include this bit of information I have on Amos.
An early settler of Gorham, Cumberland, Maine. Built his house on what is now Melvill Cressey's field. His farm was two 30 acre lots # 40 and 42. He was the first town clerk (1764-1769), was highly respected and was one of the first selectman.

WRG, This is the List for Weston Ma., that is up through the first 400 pages of the book. The book is almost 600 pages, it took 3 1/2 hrs to get up to page 400. Will update as I get the chance. The last 200 pages of the book are mainly private records of Ministers, grave yards, etc. A lot I found were duplicates and baptisms, below seems to be the main bulk of the records, except maybe baptisms. It's something to start on anyway. peg

Randy: You have an Elizabeth Thornton b. 1696 in Rockingham, NH in your database, and have her linked as the daughter of James Thornton and Elizabeth Jenkins. Do you have a source for this? I am very dubious, as I have extensive information on this family and have never come across said Elizabeth. Also, James Thornton and Elizabeth Jenkins emigrated approx 1717 to U.S. making daughter born in NH 1696 unlikely..... Steve Uhl [email protected]

Hi, Jan-- Finally! The Whitneys are into Maine and I'm excited. I'll be watching VR's for many towns where my Whitney was born, lived and died. Of special interest are: Lewiston, Lisbon, Garland, Litchfield, Industry, Little River, Strong, Guilford.
Aaron Whitney was born 10 Sep 1774 (not sure what town), married Betsey
Hildreth in May 1799 and his children were born in various towns as they evidently migrated to his last residence of Guilford. Children were:
Abigail Merrill Whitney, b. 31 Mar 1800; Robert Hildreth WHITNEY, b 18 Dec 1801 Reliance Small WHITNEY, b 23 Sep 1803 (my
3 G grandm.)
Annis Spears WHITNEY, b. 23 Sep 1805 Relief Hildreth WHITNEY, b. 7 Sep 1807 Sally Spears WHITNEY, b. 11 Oct 1809 Thomas Flint WHITNEY, b 13 Nov 1813 William Hildreth WHITNEY, b. 7 Oct 1815 Betsey Jr. WHITNEY, b 7 Oct 1818
Betsey Sr.(Hildreth) WHITNEY died 17 Aug 1819 in Guilford. Aaron married the widow Mary (Crockett) DOBLE in 1822 and had one more child:
Stillman F. WHITNEY, b 11 Jun 1823
Aaron died in Guilford by 1855.
Does anyone in the group have any of these people in their ancestry? Would love to hear from them! Evelyn Brown (in Oregon)
Aaron is my "unconnected Whitney". Who is his father????

Dear WRG:
The series of compiled, edited and formatted VR's that I am cooperating on with Peg, Jan, and all the others now includes another collection of twenty-one towns (Assorted VR's Part VI). These are available on request in ASCII (.txt) format and are easy to import into any word processor and printed for quick reference. They can also be searched by any *find and replace* utility. Each is between fifteen and twenty odd pages long, and if your word processor can support large documents, can be collected together into one huge list, for easier electronic searching (I can't with mine, it has a 64K limit on any one wp file).
Those of you who are new to the list and would like a listing of what is available in the other five collections (actually seven, as the first ones are stand-alones), please contact me individually so I don't bore everyone with the fifth-seventh-tenth-?th listing of all the towns in each.
Assorted Whitney VR's of Massachusetts Part VI includes: Cummington, Eastham, Fitchburg, Groton (revised, expanded and corrected), Hanover, Harwich, Littleton, Lunenburg, Marshfield, Medford, Medway, Mendon, Methuen, Millbury, Montague, Newburyport, New Bedford, Northbridge, Otis, Oxford and Watertown.
I keeping with the policy of not sending attachments to the list, I will be happy to send this file to anyone who asks on a one-to-one basis. I am at work already on Part VII, which may be finished by the end of this weekend.
Happy Hunting

Dear Cousins,
I had been wondering for some time why I had an ancestor by the
above name and there was another man with the same name in Maine, but distantly related. I forget who it was I corresponded with up in Windham, ME so thought you'd be interested to know that I discovered that Albion Keith Parris was the much loved Governor of Maine from 1822-1826, and as many babes in Maine carry his name, as that of Benjamin Franklin! In the Whitneys, they dropped one "r"letter in Parris. Incidentally, I am reading "Maine in the Making of the Nation 1783-1870" by Elizabeth Ring and I highly recommend it to those searching in Maine. Great resource for "getting inside the hearts and minds" of folks living there in that era.
I have copies of the Whitney marriage entries in "The Maine Farmer"
published, it appears, in 1830-1850's. Will type and send for the data base, if you all want or will take queries on E-mail. Also have Whitneys in Freeman Maine 1797-1938. Will do lookups for anyone. I will be typing and submitting Gorham ME VR's this week. Good Luck to you all Jan

Hi Guys,
Just got some info from someone on the STARK list of yet another Whitney - Stark marriage. This is Polly Whitney (b. May 22, 1796 Poultney VT) marrying Caleb Butler (b. Jan 9, 1792 NY/VT). Polly from the line of John > Joshua > David >Solomon. If anyone would like the info on her descendents let me know and I'll type it up.
Bye, Michael Whitney

All I can tell you is that the vital records of Douglas, Worcester Co., MA, p. 191, include the death of Micah WHITNEY on 29 Nov 1791. This I take to be your ancestor, since his brother Ezra was living in Douglas at the time. There were actually four different Micah WHITNEYs: Yours, his son, his brother Ezra's son, and a more distantly related one who lived in Leicester, MA. Ezra's son Micah died 12 Feb 1795 in Uxbridge, according to the vital records of Uxbridge, Worcester Co., MA, p. 416, and I have no death dates for the other two.
The source for the 1860 date is Abner Morse, _History and Genealogy of the Towns of Sherborn and Holliston, Mass._, Boston, 1856, who is no doubt in serious error.
>Our reference cites Genealogy reference number 504 for Micah from "The >Descendants of John Whitney" by Frederick Clifton Pierce (or Pierre?) >Press of W. B. Conkey Co, Chicago, 1895. Can you tell me where to find >a copy of this "The Descendants of John Whitney"?
I can't help you here. I know that most large genealogical libraries have it, such as the Library of Congress, the NEHGS Library in Boston, and the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. Where else you might find it is problematical. You may be able to purchase a reprint of it, but if I were you, I would be very careful before I did that. There are numerous errors in F. C. Pierce's books, so they should be treated as clue material only.
>I am new to this computer searching and could use some pointers on >finding more information on Micah (b. 1725) through John Barry Whitney >(b. 29 JUN 1879). Any helpful pointers or E-mail addresses of contacts >would be appreciated.
You may find some of the records before 1850 of this family in the Vital Records of various towns in Massachusetts which appear at my website below. In your case, the towns of interest would be Sherborn, Watertown, Natick, Douglas, and Mendon, among others. There you will find the birth of Micah, his marriage, the births of his children, their marriages, and his death.
I have no further information about the family of Mason WHITNEY after his marriage to Dolly RAWSON in 1792.
Regards,
Robert

People who came to a town and stayed for more than 3 months were warned'. The idea was that the town did not want people who had no means of support and who might be as one entry says "likely to become a town charge." Not all the people in the warnings were indigent.
